The Italian Air Force arrived in North Carolina for Bold Quest 2013. Aircraft include three Tornado IDS attack aircraft, a KC-767A, a C-130J that arrived for SAR operations, and a C-27J, as well as naval and ground units from Italy. It will also include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK, and US units.

The goal of the exercise is to test new equipment, including a new IFF, the Next Generation IFF (NGIFF) which will give air units the ability to identify ground units through IFF, as well as the Air to Surface Identification (ASID) system. The aim of these technologies is to eliminate blue on blue incidents (so called friendly fire, which is anything but friendly).

The exercise kicked off yesterday at MCAS Cherry Point in North Carolina.

So is it a bit like Operation Red Flag in Nevada?

A bit, but where Red Flag focuses on air to air and dealing with enemy defenses, this focuses on close air support and preventing the accidental targeting of friendly forces.
