There are spaces that are not shown as he moves the pieces out and there are some spots where the focus fades or flips. Interesting video though.

It has to do with the fact that it is cut at an angle.
The angle intercepts the squares so when they move it and line it up to a different section it rearranges the lines.

It would be completely different if each square was cut individually but they aren't. It is specifically cut to be able to maneuver the pieces around. It's the sliding at an angle that makes look like an optical illusion.

Pretty cool.
