interesting little rant, the woman just wants to justify her behavior.

she could just have easily said something polite like "mommy's tired, and when you spring this on me at the last minute it's not really fair either" but then she'd have to take responsibility for being the adult in this situation and not taking the matter in hand sooner..

..it's disgusting how this kind of self love results in all that psychobabble, and they expect you to swallow it

All I am really asking is for you to not spread your nanny state BS and try to implicate everyone because they don't confirm to your idea of right and wrong

Reading with your child because they are required to for homework has nothing to do with nanny state BS. It has to do with learning. If the child wants to not further their education after high school it is their choice. Until that time parents should do everything in their power to teach their children the basics, as it gives them the best chance to be successful. Can the fail? Of course. Working hard does not always get you where you want to be but it is in the failure of working hard toward a goal and NOT achieving it that we grow as humans. You have to be in the arena with blood sweat and tears to truly understand how life works.

Why not give them the best chance to succeed? If you don't want your child do homework you don't have to make them - but ultimately that affects them, not you. It is hard enough in this world to make it working hard and having an education - why would you deny your child a fighting chance because you have some preconceived notion of a "nanny state", which has nothing to do with reading to your kid at night?

Because you yourself had no help and failed at school you are instilling the same attributes to your kids? Do you see how selfish that is? What if they want to grow up to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer? They can't if don't have basic skills. Can the be successful elsewhere? Sure. But why deny them the opportunity to choose what they want to be in life?
