Storm chasers are nuts here is the one earlier today people got hit in

Channel 9 is now reporting 5 (five) fatalities reported in the area where Mike Bettes of The Weather Channel's car was damaged.

Mike Bettes is hurt, but okay. He said his car was thrown 200-feet and that he got too close to the tornado.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I really hope Joplin isn't hit with anything bad..

8:48pm CDT - Sirens sounding a 3rd time in Joplin; possible rain-wrapped tornado could clip northern Joplin before 9:15pm CDT.

KFOR-TV a minute ago
KFOR’s Adam West reports 5 vehicles (3 of them SUV’s) are completely submerged at Cornell and Reno.

I think they may rethink their new advise of "If you can't get below ground, get out of the way." The meteorologists kind of picked that up after Gary England gave that advise during the May 3rd tornado, and it is something that most Oklahoman's had never heard before. Growing up here, we were always told to get to the center most part of the house away from doors and windows, and cover your head. It looks like Oklahomans have taken the advise to get out of the way this time, and it has caused a mess on the highways.

That is tragic, really.

Prior to tonight, it seemed like reasonable advice.

But who could possibly imagine how big and insane this would be? It won't stop, it just keeps spawning new tornadoes.

Weather Channel saying lots of car damages, highways/cars with lots of problems and flooding getting to be a big concern throughout the areas where these storms trained. Hotel in Missouri possible injuries there.

Folks that fault us for posting relevant to all of this...I don't get it? Many here at ATS have web pals in those areas, families, friends and such, so what is wrong with reporting what we are hearing and what warnings we are aware of? Perhaps some folks are on line and not tv so they may actually get a heads up from here....that's a good thing. To be concerned and worried about all those folks in harms way...what is wrong with that? That is called caring....that is called humanity. I hope everyone in those areas will be safe and well but things do look bad right now. Still, it's not "doom porn", it is being "Human"!

Sounds like good and bad News. No reports of major damage which is great this far in.

St. Louis got hit with multiple tornado's now.

The idea of 1000s of people jumping in cars to quickly leave a storm area is insane. What happens is a giant parking lot on the highways.

As they keep showing St. Louis on tv, I can't help but think of the arch on Defiance.

Stay safe

Storm just came through Miami, but we didn't get much, just some thunder and a bit of rain as it passed on the way to Missouri.

I absolutely agree. I was actually on the phone with my Mama who is out in Bethany when the tornado was heading for her. I begged her to get in the car and leave. I am so glad that she ignored me and just climbed in her trusty bathtub instead.

This was the first time that I have seen folks take to the highways instead of taking cover in their homes. I have said it before and I will say it again, we need mandated underground shelters here for every new home build, school, and trailer park. It is really the only safe option for those in Tornado Alley.

BTW, has anyone on staff heard from Springer and know if he is ok?

People also were getting off work so it was rush hour there, too. Compound that with people jumping in their cars and getting the heck outta dodge and you have a complete standstill. What a terrible time to have this happen, when everyone is on the roads.

Still can't get a hold of my sister but she should be okay. She lives in Norman.

No tornado warnings are in effect for Oklahoma at this time. Most of central Okla. is still under a tornado watch until midnight. Flash flood is now a serious issue for the metro. DO NOT drive into water. Turn around, don’t drown.

kfor.com...

All clear in OK for now. Fox is reporting 5 unconfirmed deaths and no reports of major centers being hit.
