Further information for those that don't know the purpose of fighting a war waged on ''Jews and Crusaders''. Crusaders = Christians.

Timeline of al Qaeda atrocities 1989 - 1998

1998
US embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya, are simultaneously bombed, killing 258 people and injuring more than 5,000.

The US president, Bill Clinton, orders cruise missile strikes on al-Qaida training camps in Afghanistan and a pharmaceutical factory in Sudan that the US claims is producing chemical weapons.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, merges his group with al-Qaida to form the International Front for Fighting Jews and Crusaders and, so intelligence agencies believe, becomes al-Qaida's second-in-command.

1997
Bin Laden tells CNN that the US must pay for its support of Israel.

1996
Bin Laden is asked to leave Sudan and returns to Afghanistan, where the Taliban militia is in the ascendancy. He calls for a jihad against the US to end the presence of "American crusader forces" in Saudi Arabia.Nineteen US servicemen are killed by an explosion in the Khobar Towers military complex in Saudi Arabia. It is blamed on al-Qaida.

1995
A plot to kill Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president, is called off.

1994
Saudi Arabia strips Bin Laden of citizenship because "of his irresponsible behaviour that contradicts the interests of Saudi Arabia and harms sisterly countries".

1993
A US black hawk helicopter is shot down over Mogadishu, the Somali capital. Up to 1,000 Somalis and 18 US rangers are killed in the battle that follows, the most violent episode in a failed US peacekeeping mission that saw the death of 25 American soldiers.

Three years later Bin Laden tells the London-based al-Quds newspaper that his previously Pakistan-based Afghan Arabs were fighting the US. It is later established that a Mombasa-based al-Qaida cell had travelled to Mogadishu to foment trouble.

In New York, a bomb explodes in the underground car park at the World Trade Centre, killing seven people and injuring more than 1,000 others. When Ramzi Youssef is eventually convicted of the bombing, it emerges that he had direct contact with Bin Laden and received funds from al-Qaida.

1991-92
Bin Laden relocates to Sudan. He gives financial backing to Hassan Turabi, the country's hardline leader, and various other Islamist causes from Algeria to Afghanistan.

Al-Qaida begins to form links with other Islamist groups in the region, including the Islamic Jihad Movement of Eritrea and al-Itihaad al-Islamiya, a Somali group.

1989
As the Soviets admit defeat in their 10-year battle to control Afghanistan, Saudi millionaire Osama bin Laden brings together Arab mojahedin in the country to create al-Qaida (the base) to fight a new jihad.

I see a clear way around his argument and as such I conclude it is fundamentally flawed.

Whilst the West (losely incorporated to include Britain and the US at its heart), is fighting the Taliban, allegedly on the behalf of the people of Afghanistan, one must look to the nature of the conflict, and Western conflicts in the Middle East more broadly, in order to understand the validity of the Jihadist justification (NOTE: By validity, I in no way endorse it. In fact, the Jihadist argument itself is also flawed for numerous other reasons).

Firstly, the government which the US and Britain are propping up and supporting in Afghanistan lack any legitimacy amongst the people whatsoever. It is embroiled with widespread corruption, it is well documented (and very common) that members of the police force and the military engage in the rape of adolescent boys, the military often also engages in widespread human rights abuse (especially in relation to the kidnapping and holding for ransom of civilians, not Taliban fighters).

In this sense, many of the Afghanistani people regard the central government as far more corrupt and immoral than the Taliban.

The manner in which the West is fighting this war is another issue. It has engaged bomber pilots and drones to bomb suspected Taliban fighters, however this regularly results in the death of civilians. This does not occur strictly in Afghanistan, but also Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. As the Koran regards all Muslims as equal and all Muslims as brothers, this is perceived as an attack on Islam, and the Jihadists have reiterated this stance on multiple occasions.

This example has also highlighted the scope of the Western military engagement of the Middle East. The West is not only engaged in conflict in Afghanistan, but it has also destroyed Iraq and destabilized many other Muslims states.

One premise in this pretty crappy essay that I do not necessarily dispute, is this passage:

There is something of great significance to be learned from this. In the Muslim world today, it is hatred of the West, not love of -- or even concern for -- fellow Muslims, that animates Muslim atrocities and terror against the West.

Although I would argue Muslim solidarity does play a key role, in association with hate which stems from Western involvement in the Middle East.

There will be people that argue that Britain is not as involved in the conflict in the Middle East as the US and therefore all Jihadists arguments are moot. This is not true, Britain was involved in Iraq and is in Afghanistan. Whilst it does not have a drone operation of its own, it still has engaged in the killing of civilians, and as Britain is a key supporter of US policy, it is almost interchangeable with the US, not only to the people of Afghanistan, but to the Jihadists.

Solutions which do not involve more force and more coercion are the only useful and applicable ones to this problem.

well, it seems that people are trying to change the face of Afghanistan:

www.thesun.co.uk...

But the Taliban dont like it:

TALIBAN chiefs have expressed their anger at what they see as Islam’s newest enemy — BALLOONS.

The terror organisation used a blog post to slam a charity project in the Afghan capital Kabul — called We Believe In Balloons — that gave away 10,000 pink balloons in the name of peace.

And it wasn’t just balloons that riled them - activities like wrestling, skiing and fashion shows were also blamed as means of smuggling western culture into Afghanistan through the back door.

Some people havn't even seen a Balloon!

There is a lot of muslim on muslim violence going on in teh Middle East right now. I'm certain you will say that it is the fault of the US. Iran and Iraq fought each other to a standstill with tens of thousands dead on both sides. Iraq Invaded Kuwait and raped and tortured Kuwaitis. Internal revolutions in Syria and Egypt.

It seems that the ME is not the peace loving, happy, kumbaya group of people you all make it to be.

You are so blind that you can not see why you have fought and who you have been fighting for years.

you are so proud that you can not see that your govt has been helping terrorist groups and fighting them in the same time.

You are so ignorant that you can not understand that the money for war in Muslim country is donated by western countries our western puppets.

You are so biased that do not give Muslims to fight invaders and greedy corporations out of their country.

And

At last , you are so brain washed that choose the term Jihad to accuse Muslims for the crimes you and your govt has been doing for past 12 years.

Jihad means that all the Muslims who has been driven out of their home and been deprived from their rights , should fight the invader and get their rights back.

I am a Jihad soldier and I don't fit into what you tried to fit me in.

Like any American who wants to fight to defend it's soil and his home , is a Jihadi

here is a thread against this false biased idea :

Information on the term ''Jihad''.

en.wikipedia.org...

Jihad (English pronunciation: /dʒɪˈhɑːd/; Arabic: جهاد‎ ǧihād [dʒiˈhæːd]), an Islamic term, is a religious duty of Muslims. In Arabic, the word jihād translates as a noun meaning "struggle". Within the context of Islam it refers to struggle against those who do not believe in Islamic God (Allah).[1]
Jihad is commonly misunderstood as "Holy War", Jihad means "to struggle in the way of Allah". Jihad appears 41 times in the Quran and frequently in the idiomatic expression "striving in the way of God (al-jihad fi sabil Allah)".[2][3][4] A person engaged in jihad is called a mujahid; the plural is mujahideen. Jihad is an important religious duty for Muslims. A minority among the Sunni scholars sometimes refer to this duty as the sixth pillar of Islam, though it occupies no such official status.[5] In Twelver Shi'a Islam, however, Jihad is one of the 10 Practices of the Religion.
There are two commonly accepted meanings of jihad: an inner spiritual struggle and an outer physical struggle.[2] The "greater jihad" is the inner struggle by a believer to fulfill his religious duties.[2][6] This non-violent meaning is stressed by both Muslim[7] and non-Muslim[8] authors.
The "lesser jihad" is the physical struggle against the enemies of Islam.[2] This physical struggle can take a violent form or a non-violent form. The proponents of the violent form translate jihad as "holy war",[9][10] although some Islamic studies scholars disagree.[11] The Dictionary of Islam[2] and British-American orientalist Bernard Lewis both argue jihad has a military meaning in the large majority of cases.[12] Some scholars maintain non-violent ways to struggle against the enemies of Islam. An example of this is written debate, often characterized as "jihad of the pen".[13]

Within classical Islamic jurisprudence—the development of which is to be dated into the first few centuries after the prophet's death[32]—jihad is the only form of warfare permissible under Islamic law, and may consist in wars against unbelievers, apostates, rebels, highway robbers and dissenters renouncing the authority of Islam.[33] The primary aim of jihad as warfare is not the conversion of non-Muslims to Islam by force, but rather the expansion and defense of the Islamic state.[34][35] In later centuries, especially in the course of the colonization of large parts of the Muslim world, emphasis has been put on non-militant aspects of the jihad. Today, some Muslim authors only recognize wars with the aim of territorial defense as well as the defense of religious freedom as legitimate.[36]

Are we to believe that if only the US pulls out of the region all of the anti-US rhetoric and terrorist attacks against US and its allies will stop?

here is my answer in the reply

you are so proud that you can not see that your govt has been helping terrorist groups and fighting them in the same time.

And that means , as soon as western money stops from being sent to support these terrorists , they will stop.

But about Iran , which has been old betrayed and sanctioned by US govt , the rhetoric will not stop by stop helping terrorists groups.

It will stop by stopping sanctions and stopping killing Iranian scientists. Stop blaming Iran for untrue reason. Stop being Imperialist on Iran. Stop demonizing Muslims . Stop demonizing Iran ......

But that is much to ask from Imperialists , isn't it ?

Then you are going to tell me that thousands were killed and govt destroyed our homes , because your MSM reported so.

People protested , but they didn't get killed like you say.

And comparing the protest to the war against countries shows that either you know nothing about wars , or you ignore the truth intentionally to get your own unfair result.

Mideast, I'm so sorry that your government suppresses all of you so much that they won't even allow you to hear the truth. There have been many human rights violation reports and articles written from first hand witnesses to prove the level of violence, jailings and deaths that took place after the last Iranian election. You're more concerned about your property being taken away than you are about your fellow Iranians obviously.

The only thing you've done here is prove the OP right about it all being about brainwashing hate for the West fed to you by your government and journalists.

While it was radical Muslim attacks that kicked off the last 10 years of wars, it was our meddling in the middle east that caused the radicalization.

Absolutely, but if that radicalization occurred prior to our invasion then it certainly won’t go away when we leave because they’re more enraged now. Our departure will only serve to embolden them. They will claim victory, regroup and redouble their efforts to pay US back for the same perceived injustices that led them to numerous terrorist attacks against US since 1972 in NY.

To date there have been 3,101 killed by Muslims in America in 70 terror attacks. This isn't going away just because we do...

Ok tone down the rhetoric its not a hate cult. The problem is most westerners can't understand Islam or for that matter the middle east.First this is a religous war has been going on for centuries nothing new there. But as westerners we have a hard time understanding why. To us killing in the.name of a religion is considEred barbaric however that has not all ways been the case. So when confronted with believers we look at it like something else must be the cause so we blame ourselves because it has to be something we did right?

Well the truth is no Islam knows it will become the only religion and tells Muslims they must work for this goal. It even sets the rules and being on the side of non believers sucks because to achieve there goal anything goes.
wever there's a split in Islam a huge one in fact .

The fight is between Sunni primarily backed by Saudi arabia who promotes terrorism and then Shia backed by Iran who again promotes terrorism. Now here's the problem we can back one or the other but in the end you'll all ways get the same results. Let's look at israel for a moment there original enemies were the Sunni Sausi Arabia formed a coalition that nearly destroyed Israel. Israel decided its much better to get along with Sunni since they were in their backyard. So now they have a working relationship. But in doing this they anger Shia catch 22.

As long as tribalism rules the middle east this will continue. Countries are arbitrary there just tribes with a flag.(His makes negotiating all most impossible that's why I tend to think the Russians actually have the right idea on how to deaal with this the United States is clueless. This is evidenced by Obama reaching out to Putin for help.ill discuss more later if you like hard to type on cell.

If that is the case then why isn't islam attacking any other european country?

It certainly seems, if not entirely obvious by now, that islamic fanatics are focusing on countries that have bases in the middle east and needless to say INTERFERE with their culture and politics. "We" are creating the problems one by one and then wonder like idiots why they dislike us.

If europeans were to attack america then I am certain americans would feel animosity towards europeans. As they say it is NOT rocket science.

The military industrial complex of NATO is creating the problems. They need war to profit!
