As others have pointed out, the Sun is the most important water desalinator on the planet and has been since water first appeared on the planet. The world's water problems are easy to solve and have been solved over and over again already. It is the world's political problems that are hard to solve. If millions die because of a shortage of fresh water it won't be because fresh water couldn't be provided. It will be because people won't cooperate to do it.

All you have to do is pump sea water to containment areas in the accessible deserts of the world and let the sun evaporate it into irrigation pipes. (In a nutshell.)

When you take a hike in the mountains and grab a mouthful of cool fresh drinking water out of a stream, you are drinking sea water desalinated by the Sun.

actually we face no water shortage - we face a water supply problem

35 million canadians [ 0.5 percent of the population ] have 20% of the worlds potable water

Not for long if we keep voting in a-holes who are more than happy to sell up all of our natural resources to the highest bidder.
