NEW DELHI (AP) — Officials reacted with outrage Sunday to an audacious attack by about 200 suspected Maoist rebels who set off a roadside bomb and opened fire on a convoy carrying Indian ruling Congress party leaders and members in an eastern state, killing at least 24 people and wounding 37 others.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, accompanied by party President Sonia Gandhi, visited the injured in a hospital in the Chhattisgarh state capital and said the government would take firm action against the perpetrators.

"We are devastated," said Gandhi, who denounced what she called a "dastardly attack" on the country's democratic values.

Rajnath Singh, president of the opposition Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, said the country should unite in its fight against the Maoist insurgency.

I didn't know India HAD Maoist rebels.. Excuse me for laughing, since they actually killed people, so the act isn't in any way a light thing. What part of Maoist philosophy fits India though? Why?? I imagine a Vegan in a Turkey Processing plant would be a little more out of place.... Perhaps a Quaker in a World War I fighting position. It wouldn't be out of place by too much more though. I wouldn't say India is likely to show even the little respect and formality they do toward suspected Pakistani attackers for things in the past and Kashmir.

Maoist Rebels? Really? Didn't anyone tell them that even the Chinese Maoists aren't really Maoist anymore? Yikes... It's almost like learning cannibals still exist by finding one having an unexpected dinner. Just kinda shocking while horrifying all at once.

She sure does. India's Communist Party has existed since the 1920s.

The hardcore Maoists got serious in the 1960s when they broke away from the regular Communists. They've been fighting the government ever since. Today they're commonly known as Naxalites.

I used to work with a former Naxalite guerilla from Dravida. His name was Karvas Kapadia, and unlike most Maoists he was religious (Zoroastrian). Built like a grizzly bear, with some interesting stories about the days when he and his mates used to terrorise local village landlords.

Nice guy; friendly, big smile and a great sense of humour. But you didn't want to be within 100 yards of him when he was angry.

I wish I'd known that a little sooner. Part of my final in Geo was a mini Essay on the major crops as well as geo-political pressures in India. I didn't even know this factor existed..and neither did the text book, obviously. Extra credit is made of such little trivia additions. lol.....

Seriously to topic though, that is a bit surprising. I don't know why I would have thought it, in hindsight now, but I guess I thought much of those past 'battles' along the ideology lines had faded over the last 10-15 years. Obviously not. India is really one to watch, IMO. Not in any negative way, necessarily. Just one to watch develop. With a population 3-4 times that of the US? They could become whatever they choose to.

One is a religion Muslim and one is a political idea.

China denies its troops crossed into India

Can the India govt and supporting nations now condemn this obvious act to cause "terror" against the govt of India or even its own people by these Maoist Chines communist?

China is harboring terrorist in these extremist Maoist Communist. This would be a Political war not a Jihad which is a struggle against those who do not believe in GOD.

Maybe that is why there is a separation of church and state?

China can get away with this because it is a permanent member of the security council in the United Nations.

Hopefully more people can have this brought to their attention and bring forth the immediate with drawl of the chines troops that crossed the Indian border but are stationed so close to The de facto border separating China and India is known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Communism and socialism are alive and well in the Middle East. Most of the early Arab nationalist movements were socialist (e.g. Ba'athism, Nasserism) and many still are today. It's a slightly different form of socialism than the type we associate with Marx, but it's socialism nonetheless.

Socialist and communist Arab political parties continue to flourish in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Oman, and even among the Palestinians.

And in more news:

"Bastar: Anti-Maoist Salwa Judum movement's founder Mahendra Karma was the prime target of the insurgents when they attacked the Congress convoy in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region and the rebels danced before they riddled him with bullets, a survivor said on Sunday."

Communists are a big problem in India.
en.wikipedia.org...
They won't use the army against these people. Usually the police fights them, they are not equipped to deal with guerrilla fighters. They are supported by Nepal communists who get their orders from China and have links to Islamic organizations from Pakistan..
