Why does Islam, and British Islam in particular, have so many extremists?

• 1 in 8 British Muslims support demonstrators who call for the death of those who insult Islam

ICM Research

• 68% of British Muslims believe that people who insult Islam should be arrested and prosecuted.

CBS News

• NOP Research survey reports "hardcore Islamists" constitute 9% of the British Muslim population.

• A second group, 29% of the British Muslim population are "staunch defenders of Islam", who aggressively defend their religion from internal and external threats, real or imagined.

• 28% of British Muslims hope for the U.K. one day to become a fundamentalist Islamic state.

CBS News

• 40% of UK Muslims support Sharia law being introduced in areas of Britain which are predominantly Muslim. 41% oppose this. 18% are undecided.

ICM Research

• 24% of British Muslims Support Suicide Bombing of Civilian Targets

Pew Research Poll (2007)

What can be stated is that there are a large number of radical Muslims in the UK.

But why?

It would be interesting to see what these numbers would look like had this poll been conducted before the "war on terror" began.

Perhaps because Western countries, and in particular, English speaking countries adopt lenient immigration laws? Australia, such as Britain, also experiences radical, and often extreme behaviour on behalf of the Muslim population, particularly from those who are immigrants. A lot of the radical Muslims are those who hail from the Middle East or Africa, rather than home born citizens.

In my opinion, a lot of the radical Muslims are not checked properly and are allowed to enter our countries, thus opening up the potential for us to be attacked. If we had more secure immigration policies, the likelihood of radical Muslims being allowed to immigrate would be substantially smaller.

Of course, this is not the only factor. There are other Muslims who may turn radical once being in the country itself. Said Muslims may also be home born too. I'm just saying that a lot of Radical Muslims are foreigners, and if we adopted more secure immigration laws, it may lower the population of radicals...

Karma...

Being an Imperialist nation for centuries will do that to you.

But hey, at least they have the EPL as well - so, call it even...

But the Arabs were imperialists for centuries before the West and occupied large areas of Europe.

The Arabs were massive imperialists. So was Muhammad

The war on Terror began after Bin Laden and his Islamic radicals flew 2 airliner full of people into the Twin Towers.

Islamic terrorism caused the war on terror, not the other way around.

I get the impression that many second generation Muslims, for whatever reason, are more radical than their parents.

I do agree with your statement too.

It seems to me that a lot of the parents, or elderly Muslims are fine, but there is always a small population who slip through the nets so to speak. A lot of the younger ones tend to me manipulated more easily, and may drift off into radical teachings rather than the teachings they are meant to be learning if you know what i mean.

It's simply because Muslims are FREE to do whatever they like here, white British are not allowed, read below?

One of the UK terrorists who killed on our London streets on Thursday had killed in UK before some years ago, Police turned a blind eye to killing because the boy he killed was British so not protected as Muslim people are here.
David Cameron now to thank our troops for what they have done in war time has said that troops should go to court and charged with murder, sorry I'm confused I was thinking Cameron was British and was caring for our side not enemy.

I think that is true.

One problem however is that Muslims, generally speaking, tend to owe their allegiance to Islam first and to their adopted country second.

That is why British Muslims will speak about their brothers getting killed in Afghanistan or Iraq by Western forces.

The Pew report in 2006

81% of British Muslims thought of themselves as Muslims first and British second.

Only 7% thought of themselves as British first.

69% of Spanish Muslims thought of themselves as Muslims first and Spanish second.

Only 3% though of themselves as Spanish first.

66% of German Muslims thought of themselves as Muslims first and German second.

Only 13% thought of themselves as German first.

46% of French Muslims thought of themselves as Muslims first and French second.

42% thought of themselves as French first.

Pew Report

Is this anything to be concerned about?

It is if it prompts British Muslims to support terrorism.

I think a lot has to do with who funds the Mosques and Madrassah schools in the UK. I believe there is a large Saudi influence, that is preaching a fundamentalist approach to Islam.
There also seems to be an attempt by the more extreme elements to prey on vulnerable young Brits.

I do try and put myself in their position. I can understand how our hypocritical foreign policy would cause resentment and if there are imams who prey on this resentment, then with have a deadly mix.

OP, do me a favour keep this rubbish for your EDL meetings, most of your statistics are based on a sample of 500 (one i noticed was a American report) , in the UK we have about 2869,000 Muslims and the majority of them are peaceful normal law abiding citizens like you and I. We have had a Muslim population in the UK for longer than my grand-parents have been around to being Asian and Muslim is just as British as being white and Christian get over it.

If things were as bad as you make out then we would have attacks on our streets every day.

Islam as a religion is not the problem the problem is the minority within the faith that have a twisted interpretation I implore you to stop with your hate of Islam because all its doing is adding to the problem.

I am not going to get into a debate with you i find your view truly disgusting and abhorrent, I hate them, I think this type of xenophobia you and other preach on ATS should be stamped out like Resists and homophobia. For you to say that “Islam is the problem” is just as hateful and wrong as saying “all black men rape little white girls”.

Its stupid

Just stop it.

like i say I am not getting into a debate with you, I cant debate with racists, homophobes and xenophobes because frankly they are not worth it. all I am going to do is state my position and move on.

please just stop the hate, make you no better than the terrorists you oppose.

MUSLIMS ?

Since the 1979 Iranian revolution and the downfall of the US Puppet Ruler the Shah, Iran has been an Islamic state. In that interval of time, 1979 to the present, Iran has not invaded anyone. Not once.
People of all religions live in peace in Iran, even Jews, who find life so comfortable in Iran they refused an offer by the government of Israel to emigrate!

In the same period of time, Israel, a self-declared Jewish state:
Attacked Iraq in 1981, bombing the power station at Osirik, claiming it was a clandestine weapons factory. Subsequent examination of the ruins following the 2003 invasion proved Israel had lied.
In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon. This led to the Massacres at Sabra and Shatilla.
In February 2003 Israel staged incursions into Gaza and Nablus.
In September 2007 Israel bombed Syria, again insisting they were destroying a clandestine weapons laboratory. Again there was no evidence to support Israel's claims.
In 2006, Israel attacked Lebanon, killing 1200, mostly civilians, several UN observers, and littering the landscape with land mines on their way out.
In February 2008 Israel again raided Gaza, killing over 100. HAMAS agreed to a cease fire and kept it for 6 months until November 4, when Israel again attacked without warning, killing 6 HAMAS members, and launching operation CAST LEAD. 1300 Gazans, mostly civilians, were killed. Israel lost 13 soldiers.
Violations of international law included the use of White Phosphorus incendiary bombs against civilians and non-military targets.
The United Nations investigated, but Israel refused to cooperate. In May 2010, Israel attacked an international aid flotilla bringing food and medical supplies to Gaza in international waters. 9 people were murdered including an American from New York.

In the same period of time, the United States:
Attacked El Salvador (1980)

There was an interview on British T.V. the other day discussing this exact point - the hows and whys of it all.

It seemed to be irresponsible journalism but they named a website full of propaganda designed to convert ordinary Muslims to being radical. This propaganda is available in most languages and can be downloaded in the privacy of your own home - though I suspect GCHQ and others keep an eye on it which is why I won't name the site here - the authorities already have enough on their plates without dozens of curious ATS'ers adding to it.!

Pre-requisites for seeking this type of propaganda would presumably have to be in place , for example disenchanted, disassociated - when we understand the reasons for that we may be closer to a solution, in the meantime given the brain washing site available on-line to anyone interested we don't stand a chance.

I think that is very true.

Apparently over a decade ago, the Saudis had already spent $87 billion building Mosques in the West. The problem is, the Saudis are Wahhbis, the hardcore Muslims.

National Review

Almost all Muslim terrorists (if not all) are Wahhabi or Salafi (which is very similar).

That nice new mosque near where you live? The money almost certainly came from Saudi radicals intent on spreading the most intolerant and violent form of Islam in the West.

Safa writes that the Saudis have spent “$87 billion since 1973 to spread Islam throughout the United States and the Western hemisphere.”

Elsewhere in the world, it is believed that Saudi Arabia finances some 85-percent of the world’s mosques, where the vitriolic and violent Wahabbist interpretation of Islam is taught.

I think a more or equally pertinent question nay be why are so many right-wing extremists using ATS as a platform to pollute minds and air their propaganda?

This is something that I find a worrying trend. In my short time on ATS I've noticed some truly troubling and poisonous posts and threads, masquerading as questions and intersting debates.
Folks like the OP with a obvious agenda are freely allowed to post propaganda and incite hatred time after time after time.
There are tons of websites out there where these views are accepted and encouraged and nurtured so i'm not sure why ATS, a conspiracy and alternative topics forum has been selected by right-wing extremists as a target for their filth?
It makes no sense?

I'm sure, looking through the OPs posting history, that he is obviously a member (or leader) of some group like stormfront or the EDL or BNP and if not, they certainly subscribe to these fringe beliefs and principles.
As there is no free speech on ATS, I cannot fathom why it is allowed and tolerated.
Not just the OP but the dozen or so like them who are polluting this site with their hatred of Muslims.

Yet Saudi Arabia is one of our closest allies in the Middle East one of the largest purchasers of our arms industry.

The same people who are funding the Islamists in Syria are paying for the mosques and education of young British Muslims.

Iran's Islamic rulers aren't quite as peaceful as you make out.

Here is a quote from Ayatollah Khomeini (1902-1989) Iran’s Supreme Leader from 1979 to 1989, in which he makes it clear that all Muslims must engage in violent Jihad to spread Islam's domination around the globe.

Its a religious duty apparently.

“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled and incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of [other] countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world.

But those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world…. Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war.

Those [who say this] are witless.

Islam says, kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! ...Whatever good there is, exists thanks to the sword, and in the shadow of the sword!

People cannot be made obedient, except with the sword!

The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for Holy Warriors!

...Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.”

Ayatollah Khomeini (1902-1989) Iran’s Supreme Leader from 1979 to 1989—the highest ranking political and religious authority of the nation.

Link

Interestingly, when he states "The sword is the key to Paradise" he is paraphrasing Muhammad who said the same thing in Hadith.

Hadith Muslim 20:4681

"The gates of Paradise are under the shadows of the swords."

Muhammad

Not just hatred of Muslims, but hatred of immigrants in general. It seems that everyday we get a new thread whose sole purpose is to demonize immigrants. Its a really disturbing path ATS is going down

If we can put aside political correctness (which as served only to stifle legitimate debate), can we agree that the surveys by respected polling organizations show that many British Muslims hold opinions that can be described as radical?
