Hi, just a short thread to share an epiphany I've just had.

I've seen Goodfellas around 10 times, the last time was 6 months ago. The time before that was about 10 years ago.

When I watched it 6 months back for the for the 1st time in so many years, my opinion was;

"Damn I forgot just how good this is!" This must be my favorite Gangster movie of all time???

(For the record, I loved the God Father movies too)

So tonight, I put on Casino (only seen this one around 6 times) and was completely hooked in as always from the opening scene, and feel the narration, the cast and the directing is mustard. I LOVE this film..

So..... This thread is about these 2 films ONLY, and my epiphany was;

Casino isn't quite on par to The Goodfellas, because the Goodfells was there 1st and got the 1st impact in on this modern day gangster genre.

However! What if Casino was released 1st??? before Goodfellas? How would I/you feel about the 2 films then?

My epiphany is as follows;
I think Casino would be everyone's favourite as it was made 1st.
And when Goodfellas got released after Casino, it will always be amazing, but just not quite as good as Casino - Because this way, Casino would have had the novelty factor of a hard gangster movie in the 90's sown up.

Bottom line, Goodfellas rocks cos they got in there 1st. (and it's amazing)

I just believe Casino would have been the daddy if that had got in there and released 1st instead...

My personal scores would be;
Goodfellas 9/10
Casino 9.5/10

Not a lot in it, just wanted to throw my theory out there.

Please discuss, I would love to have my mind changed or opened if need be, I'm just curious to what others think!

Respect..
OP123

ps I already know maybe 2 or 3 will reply at most, but if you are lovers of these films, they will be good replies i'm sure.

Casino, every time. I prefer the characters and setting and Ginger’s so awesome!

My fella says Goodfellas….

I wasn’t going to bother signing in tonight but I felt sorry that no-one had replied to your thread

Surprised with the lack of responses actually! Two absolute classics, they don’t make them like this anymore.

Oh, now I want to watch Casino and I was going to have an early night, damn you

It doesn't matter when each movie was released. But one movie has Ray Liotta and the other doesn't.

Gotta go with Casino. The storyline was more complex. Oh and Pesci was TOTALLY nuts in that one.

Yeah because killing a teenager at a poker game and killing a made man by stabbing him in the neck about 20 times is only partially nuts.

I might have had a few more responses if i wasn't so drunk and rambling, quite embarrassing! lol

I was the same as your fella and preferred Goodfellas too, but after watching Casino again i had a change of heart. I actually just ordered it on Bluray

That's your opinion and I respect it, and good observation about Ray Liotta

Agreed agreed agreed! Joe Pesci was the backbone of Casino imo, watching it again really made me appreciate his acting all over.

Agreed, he was more psycho in Goodfellas i.e a loose cannon, but more scary in Casino

By shooting him. Goodfellas.

...and killing a made man by stabbing him in the neck about 20 times is only partially nuts.

That was Casino and that was TOTALLY nuts. He also meets the most brutal of deaths. By baseball bat. He got it in the back of the head in Goodfellas.

Yeah, Casino by a nose.

Casino>Goodfellas.

I still love both movies and have seen each of them over 30 times each. Yeah, I love movies.

It's a tough choice...I would say Goodfellas by a hair.

Funny how? Like I amuse you?

These mob movies are horrible. The glamorize organize crime. These movies actually give them more power and self-esteem.

They don't focus on the level of destruction caused by the mob.

The style is so similar.
If I remember correctly, Casino was narrated by a dead guy. I won't say who, that might be a spoiler.
Also Casino had a guys head in a bench-mounted vise, hammer versus fingers, and baseball in a cornfield.
I even think Joe ended up shoeless.

Goodfellas had Ray Liotta's "day"...With Helicopters, a missing lucky hat, a bag of crappy guns, and homemade meatballs.

I think they were both released at the right times.
