Academia is socialist.

I'm suprised that this wasn't posted already.

SURVEY: Zero conservatives selected to deliver 2013 commencement speeches at Ivy Leagues

The list of keynote commencement speakers at Ivy League institutions for 2013 does not include a single conservative, a recent study authored by the conservative Young America’s Foundation (YAF) found.

Last year, a Campus Reform investigation found that 96 percent of the faculty and staff at Ivy League schools who contributed to the 2012 presidential race donated to President Obama’s campaign. From the eight schools, $1,211,267 was contributed to the Obama campaign, versus $114,166 given to Romney.

Of the top 100 universities listed by U.S. News and World Report, 62 chose to select liberal individuals to deliver commencement speeches, compared to 17 conservatives, according to YAF.

The following table shows the politics of the speaker by color. Red is liberal, Blue is conservative, Yellow is unknown.

The table is from the Young America's Foundation

I'm not surprised at all. Welcome to 95% of the colleges in America.

I had a really good friend all though high school and after the first year in college she went from being a nice, hard working person to an outspoken argumentative annoyance. Guess what also changed? Her political views. She couldn't be more liberal, and that's the basis of her rude attitude. She even admitted it. She dislikes this country now because she's been "taught" about how bad employers are, how our government doesn't provide us with enough.. etc.. She wants more money but doesn't want to work for it, thinks loans should be free.. Hates guns i could go on and on

I really wish she would have been a stronger person, it's hard for me to even be around her anymore because she always finds a way to argue something politics. (and we do not see eye to eye at all in that territory) Although during the summer when she comes home and visits, i do try my best to open her eyes to the evils of our government. I actually think some of it might be sticking but oh well.. all you can do is try.

I really don't believe the "liberals" of today are actually anything like the liberals 100 years ago. By definition the ideology is founded on liberty, or the right to be free. They supported the free market, limited government and political freedom. The group today just wants the government to be huge, to control everything and provide everything. They want restrictions on what they don't like or dont think is safe. Where it will take us i have no idea.. I guess i got lucky my SO spent six years in college and now works as a satellite systems engineer for raytheon. She never changed or adopted any liberal beliefs.

Red is liberal, blue is conservative? Well, that's kinda backwards.

And no, academia is not "socialist," just that people with advanced degrees and more intelligence tend to...lean left.

Doesn't surprise me.

College puts you in touch with people from a lot of different cultures and encourages you to keep an open mind about everything. The fact that there are no conservative speakers at ivy league graduations is very telling about the conservative mindset.

It has been proven that conservatives tend to have lower IQ's than the rest.

The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood.

Everything except conservatism, free markets, individual freedom and the disregulated life.

As far as IQ goes, the high IQed minions believe in man made global warming, that experts know all, and that, in the 1930s, every socialist dictator on Earth was the greatest advancement of society.

The idea of an IQ test has merit, (the devil is in the details), but most IQ tests signify what a person believes.

If a person believes that a liberal college is neccessary to acheive the best life, that person will tend remember all the things checked for on an IQ test.

I am neither liberal nor conservative, yet you think that because I think that liberals are idiots and the same of conservatives that I am not as educated or as intelligent as you liberal college graduates? You are what decays this country. you are self riteous self centered ego manics that hide behing a veil of progressing society. neither group is any better than the others but at least i can say this about the conservatives, they do not lie about their agendas. Please show me true liberal intelligence. I would love to see some for the first time in my life.

a study done by liberals in a liberal magazine.... epic fail... Show some liberal intelligence and learn on your own account what is true about gun owners, rural americans, farmers, ranchers, small business owners, hunters, military personnel, patriots, church goers, pro life, and anyone else considered conservative. live in their lives, work as hard as they do, then look around you and see everything you have been missing. kind of funny though, it seems all of what I listed as conservatives are also listed in the watch groups.....

Nope, that describes me yet i fail to lean "left" you are a judgemental bigot. you are judging people based on their political stance, which tend to be more a product of environment than self actualized.

Does anyone have a list of the political affiliations of keynote commencements speakers from the last 10 years? It would be interesting to make a year-by-year comparison.

And we can find just as many "studies" saying the exact opposite. That in fact, conservatives have higher IQs while liberals or stupid. Or that one always makes more money than the other...or, or, or....anything you want.

Your post shows your own ignorance, not that of those with conservative beliefs. Nice try lumping in everyone and tagging them with a label though. You know what people who do that are called, don't you?

The colors have swiched before. The democrat/progessives from earlier in the century of socialism were red.

When Republicans were Blue and Democrats were Red

Nowadays the center is left, so leaning left is very, very close to socialism.

Academe is something of a meritocracy, itself, but its income is butterred by the centralised socialistic State.

Academia supplies the persons manning the beaurocratic, legal and political infrastructure. The infrastructure grows, ostensibly to get more of a good thing, and increases the demand for socialistic graduates.

A socialistic academia is required to run a socialistic state.

I'm neither a bigot, nor am I judging anyone (which my posts to ATS will confirm), I'm simply stating an observable and verifiable fact.

I never said that conservatives were stupid, or that ALL people in higher education or with more intelligence were liberal, just that they TEND to lean to the left as a majority. I know intelligent conservatives, and some with advances degrees. But MOST tend to LEAN left. Fact. Social consciousness.

Sorry if your feelings got hurt.

*sigh

It doesn't matter what colors *used* to be assigned to the parties, or how the parties have shifted in the past 150+ years, nor am I talking about the changing left V right politics. NOW, we associate blue with liberal and red with conservative. That the "study" changed those associations is telling and backwards, for MODERN times. For people looking at a color coded political map (and many things are color coded these day for ease) that might not be the best thing to get the point across. Like if on election night, those states who voted for a Repb were coded blue and those for a Dem were coded Red, because of current association. See my point?

That said, since everything is a socialist conspiracy, I guess the conservatives are in on it too, since we have conservative presidents and congresspeople, graduates, and business owners, etc.

I forgot, it's all a socialist conspiracy, run and fueled by the socialists"academia," maintained by the global banking, political, legal, and bureaucratic infrastructure that is all control by secret closeted socialists. I stand corrected.

Makes perfect sense to me. A quality education tends to lead to critical thinking which in turn leads to a more liberal leaning. Conservatives are for the most part con men who lead those who go with their feelings, fears and religion by their collective noses.

Isn't that the premise of this entire post?!

Don't republicans have anything more important to do than judge everyone by their political affiliation and keep scores about it?

To be honest, it tends to be true... Such studies have also been made round here too, non-biased. Left-wing does not necessarily mean socialism. This country used to be part of soviets, so the people here hate communism more than anything. Yet they tend to be more left-wing in their views. Left-wing does not necessarily mean socialism or communism. This country is taking Nordic countries as role model.

There are many reasons for it, why intelligent people tend to more liberal:

1) Most intelligent people do not believe into religion
2) Intelligent people tend to be anti-war. Grown-ups use words, not guns after all.
3) Intelligent people tend to be more open-minded and understanding different cultures, which leads to less racism.
4) Intelligent people tend to be better to team-work with. They understand that alone they can not do nothing and best results come with teamwork. When I have worked in teams where people tend to be less intelligent, there have always been "power fights". Everybody wants to get what they went, get their line without doing what is best for the team. Less ego maybe? Although this is rarer than the first three but still a tendency which is common.
5) Depending on the person, I do not know any dumb person who is not materialistic, yet I know several more intelligent ones who are not into the materialistic values. Many scientists, especially round here, are like that. They choose worse-paying jobs in order to develop science instead of going to some corp, where they could earn times more. I do not know any less intelligent person, who does not jump for money.
6) Understanding society as a whole better. Society is just as strong as its weakest links, the lower class and middle class. Too much capitalism, corporatism tends to create too much inequality which leads to weaker society as a whole, which is not good for any of us.
7) Intelligent people tend to be environmentally more aware.

To end, there are all types of people, although especially due to first 3 points, there tends to be a tendency between intelligence and left-wing views. Not all of of-couse. There are dumb left wingers and intelligent right-wingers, but there is at least some tendency between intelligence and left-wing views, as much as I have noticed and what different studies have shown. Most intelligent people I know are left-centrists, just as I am. Personal responsibility must exist, but strongest people should help weakest ones out more, instead of taking advantage of their weakness like it is common in very right-wing countries.

Social safety networks are good for the nation overally. Less crime, happier people, less stress, more educated people (if cheap universities and strong well-invested public school system without private schools), more education leads to better environmental awareness and healthier choices, which again help with stress and happiness + save the environment more.

Even if I had to pay 50% taxes on the one million I earn, it does not matter, as I still would earn more than 99% of the people out there... . It would be better than taking 100 bucks from 5000 poor people with 1k salary, as 900 dollars is harder to live with than 500k... + I definetely did not work 500 times harder, nobody does... although I do not earn millions and that is not my goal either.

Currently I am earning very well compared to most people round here (3x the average salary) and I have nothing against the taxes... It is my obligation as being "stronger" to help out the "weaker" ones, as in many cases they are not directly responsible for their life + I still have more money than I actually need to live with.

this should be expected since education beyond basic education challenges strongly held beliefs about how the world should work.
conservatism promotes past ideas, instead of new ideas, tradition verses cultural change, following the status quo verses diverting from it.

thinking different from how we already think is very liberal and colleges for the most part promote that. education has always been that way, you can hardly explore or gain new knowledge by sticking to how you have always thought!

the goal of the education system is not only about learning facts but also how to learn, how to explore, to develop new ideas and expand your knowledge.

conservationism by it's very nature is the opposite. america has decided that stances on issues is what makes a liberal or a conservative, but that isn't what they mean, both refer to how you think issues should be thought about and what actions you should take.
conservative: whatever we did before!
liberal: lets try something new!

propaganda poisons both sides,
