New Forum Icons? Really? They're All Grey.

And it sucks that they're all grey. Who came up with that!? Color would help. Why fix it if it's not broken.

Not only that but the actual icons themselves are weak.

That's me.

Several issues at play here.

(1) - performance: the new icons use "CSS Sprites" for far-fewer HTTP calls on pages like Recent Posts and the Board Home. As much as 30% of our traffic is now from mobile users, and we're beginning to be cognizant of total bandwidth and http calls.

(2) - file size: color means big files... at least when migrating to CSS Sprites. The new design focuses much more on distinct shapes that are hopefully recognizable, and the larger icon sizes will help in recognition.

(3) - design: these are actually (not the right color-scheme yet) the new logos that have been created to compliment the new HTML5/mobile-ready site under development. So, hopefully, this and other incremental changes will help the new site "feel" familiar once it launches.

I thought something went kaphlooey on the website when I refreshed the "recent posts" page.

I'm experimenting with the topic color indicators... but just adding one color bumped up the file size a lot.

First time I saw them I wasn't that close to the screen so the first thing that popped into my mind was "Oh no. Something is wrong with my monitor!"

It actually helps big time, now the thread titles stand out a bit better.

Well then how about making them all bold white and making them a tidge smaller? This may look better than all those single colored icons. Plus the political Madness icon is not very appealing, especially in red.

Come to think of it, maybe it is the shade of red that is ruining the affect of the colors.

Your right, it is better now. The red is the problem child.

They look a bit cartoonish at the moment to me imho

Does the introductions icon remind anyone here of a "black face" from vaudeville days? Maybe yellow would be better?

If you are concerned about file size a smaller bold white for all of them may not look too bad.

Makes scrolling down recent posts a bit confusing, but I don't mind the individual icons too bad! I think my favourite forum (fragile earth) could be a little prettier though

Reminding self that change can be good. Although on here I'm guessing many like me aren't too keen on things changing

I like them, they stand out much more than the old ones.
