Then Don't Disregard them, and by golly we can have MORE KIDS MURDERED and YOU can be PROUD for YOUR Contribution to their MURDERS

COMPLICIT.

Might as well rape and murder them yourself. THIS is what this nation is turning into

A bunch of Cowards with No human decency,

And if That be the case, then Maybe this country DESERVES the Military FEMA camps and the rest of what's coming...

Yea this may not be forum manners but I deal every day seeing photos of little Kids horribly abused, beaten, raped, tortured, and by Court order because of WEAK COWARDLY people who

OBEY EVIL LAWS and give more POWER with their ENABLING of an EVIL SYSTEM.

KIDS, not adults, little KIDS

So NO, I don't have any tolerance or understanding of this crap, and sad thing is, no one should have to SAY what's WRONG with it. That in of itself speaks volumes...no Wonder this nation has gone to Bloody Hell. Don't blame the Government,

Oh no, Blame the Cowards who Gave the Government LICENSE.

Hmm.. what particular Law are you referring to? I really don't think anyone in this thread is condoning such abuse as you have written, furthermore, to my knowledge; those things are illegal under the current laws, too.

My point remains; who defines what laws are "okay to break"? Whose morality is right?

This is why we have a "body of people", who set the laws. Am I saying the got it right? No, I am not. But disregarding the law is also not the right solution.

When you begin to privatize the justice system, as is being done in the United States, it becomes a growth industry. That's capitalism as it is practiced in the US.

These are the early years of the Prison Industrial Complex. The industry awaits its Bill Gates or Steven Jobs, someone who, through their own inventive innovations and brilliance will outfit every American and maybe everyone in the world with their very own rap sheet.

The people in our prisons other than knowing why they are there also live better than alot of people. I mean they get 3 square meals and health care. They also have tvs in most prisons along with full gyms, shower facilities, and libraries. I don't feel sorry for those 6 million people and they put themselves there so nobody should feel sorry for them.

I'm afraid America took a wrong turn a long way back, When Wallace was Truemans second in charge, he realised if America just kept going, it would draw in the Communist block nations, because of the higher standard of living the system generated. Trueman got rid of Wallace, Because he was to socialist. From then Wall street ran the country, The CIA. received massive funding to undermine anyone the small cabal didn't like .and America became one of the most hated countries on earth. All because the rich seemed to think the Reds were under the bed. When the fact was it was paranoia that was under the bed. The bigger bombs that the Americans were developing, scared the communist nations, and everyone else, to abandon there more liberal social policies, and put all there effort in trying to keep up. Then because of the socialist paranoia the American society had no true social safety nets, in place because it was deemed to socialist. What does a citizen do when he cant, participate in the society, I guess he tries to survive the best he can, and that means taking chances that have a good chance of putting him in jail.
It was Russia after a bomb test that realised the nuclear proliferation must stop, after they had done the figures on the mega blast, they realised that in that blast alone it would end up killing 500k people somewhere in the world due to the fall out .Russia has had a bad press and that is a fact... They lost 20 million in fighting the Nazis, Without them it was questionable whether the West would win the war, japan was going to surrender as the moment the red army went through Manchuria, they new it was over. Trueman dropped the two bombs anyway, To show the Russians he could,. so Japan would surrender to the Americans. So instead of a country based on Social equity, like Sweden Norway, etc .it ended up Dog eat Dog. Putting most of its wealth in becoming the worlds policeman. To protect who? not the "average" American that's for sure.

Probably already been said but blame the war on drugs!

I made myself a costly mistake and am now a felon. I've been in jail for good reason and for ridiculous reason, I can tell you however this country has some jail-crazy policies. Missing a municipal court date on charges that were dismissed was my most recent costly jail visit.

Putting people in jail is a failed concept.

Jailing people result in broken families and are actually breeding grounds of criminals and source of corruption.

Death penalty is necessary for violent criminals. However remember justice delayed is justice denied. A case must be disposed of within days or at most a month and the culprit executed.

People dealing in drugs, or gang members engaged in violent crimes, and purveyors of prostitution must be swiftly executed. This is the only proper justice.

Robbers should get physical punishment depending on severity of crime, which should include lashes for mild crimes, and loss of limbs like hands or legs for more serious crimes. They should be released back to the society after that.

However justice can be served only if the government is clean. If the corruption goes right to the top, then how can anybody expect justice.

I don't know if this is sarcasm or not, but there are over 10,000 "laws" on the books, well, technically they aren't even law, they are statutes, but yes, they can land you in prison.

This link says 45 Million people have records in the US

I'm not sure if that's including the 6M in jail?

In any case, that's what? 1 in 6?

This source cites that 23.7% of people in the US are under 18.

And also, 50% roughly are female.

So 70 Million are ineligible because they are under 18. 150 million, or roughly are women. So now take 150 plus 35 (half of the under18 that are woman to minus it from the 150 stat.)

That leaves us with about 115 Men in the US, eligible to be a statistic. 45 million of those have a record.

Oops, minus the 7% that women make up in jails.

No matter what, you are talking more like 1 in 2.5 (or 1 in 3) men land themselves behind bars at some point.

Seriously, do the math over.

Consider that whatever stat you take, you are taking it usually for a year's worth of data.

This link cites 1.6 million arrests a year.

Of course we have to factor in people who reoffend. But no matter what, in an 80 year life span that's nearly half the population's worth of arrests.

-

Think about it, 45 million people with records, 6 million people behind bars, but there's only a pool of about 185 million they are fishing from!!

(BTW if you were being sarcastic nvm, people should still see these stats. The world is a lot smaller than you think...)

1 in 3 gonna get behind bars before age 23.

They put themselves there? If you criminalize acting stupid when a girl breaks up with you, how many guys would end up there? When you criminalize human curiosity, how many people end up there? There are so many statutes on the book, it's almost impossible not to break the law.

Other countries have 10 times LESS people than the US. It should be evident something is wrong here. And hate to break it to you, much safer places in the world to live. Much nicer places. Much cleaner places. Much places with less crime.

So in other words, ur doing it wrong.

Laws are enforced as agencies or governments see fit as well.

Do you realize how many times mothers and fathers blackmail or extort their children? Often it is so they do their homework, eat better, study better. But according to people who preach the line of "justice" (who see things black and white) law is law. So shouldn't judge Dredd be having them all stand in front of him for judgement?

Prohibition was decided on a societal basis and subsequently removed on a societal basis.

Its a very good example because it proves my point. Certain laws are in regards to crimes that do not harm others but society has determined it should be a law.

It is not the right of the individual to choose what laws are good an bad. That is acting outside of the society they choose to live in and should be punished.

That is the basic level of it.

No offense, but you seem to be utterly clueless in regards to reality. The system is a racket and too many public servants feeding in that trough makes it nearly impossible to remove bad laws. Their unions do nothing but protect their jobs and lobby for new laws to grow their bureaucracy. It is the blind acceptance of bad ideas like the war on drugs that spawn the evil, death and despair in our world.

Evil reigned in Nazi Germany, thanks to people exactly like you who said, the Jews know what the law is and they should be happy we allow them to go to a work camp. If you lived in that time I could easily imagine you turning in your neighbors for harboring a Jewish family in their attic and then running through the streets proclaiming what a good citizen you are and had they followed the law they wouldn't be in prison.

Tinkerbell, Taylor Swift clone or perhaps just a character you come here to play, open your eyes if you have the capacity.

Sarcasm? No, just common sense. It's real simple. Stop selling drugs, stop murdering, stop raping, stop being a f**kin' drunk who beats his wife, stop drinking & driving, stop selling meth to neighbor Joe, stop your road rage, stop your gang violence, stop your drive-bys, stop your burglary, stop your armed robbery, STOP STEALING s**t that isn't yours, stop soliciting to a minor, stop kidnapping minors, stop kidnapping & then raping & murdering minors, stop your disease-spreading prostitution, stop your pimping, stop molesting kids, stop your illegal dog fighting, stop importing illegal s**t, stop contributing to the DOWNFALL of society, stop disrupting the peace, STOP BREAKING THE LAW, ASSHOLE! Is there a problem with ANY of that (WHICH CLEARLY disturbs the peace)? "Yes?" Then you're clearly PART OF THE PROBLEM.
Take a survey in ANY AVERAGE prison, and hear it from THEIR OWN MOUTHS, WHAT they're in for...

And your opinion on the cigarettes?

Why are drugs illegal and alchohol is not?

Its because society makes the rules and those rules do not have to make sense. Those rules do need to be followed however and when they are not there should be punishment given out.

This is how societies must function to exist.

Plus, I mentioned that you don't leave the house and get up the next day to carry on with your life.

Can we guarantee that everyone will behave like this though?

Of course not.

The incarceration rate in the US is far too high, and many of the incarcerated are for "crimes" which do not bring harm to others (like violence, theft, etc.), but rather for personal choices which the government has decided people should not be free to make. That said, the comparison to the Gulag isn't a very good one, because it must be made relative to the population. Why say it isn't just a "relative to population" thing and then pull the Gulag - with a significantly higher relative to pop figure - out of the equation.

Again, agree there is far too nuch incarceration, and having prisoners used as corporate slaves in for-profit prisons is contrary to Ameran ideals enough to send in the miliary to free the slaves, but trying to be slick with statistics only harms the argument. Giving the info straight up (i'm speaking more of therticle writer than you, the messenger/sharer of info) speaks volumes enough.

No the prisoners in GITMO are enemy combatants. They willfully conspired to attack America and our allies in the name of Allah. Which I might add Allah would never in a million years condone what is being done in the name of Allah, by those who twist the Koran's words to justify thier evil need to kill and force thier will on weaker people.

Yes, I would jail them all because they are breaking the law.

So it doesn't matter what law it is, if you break it you go to jail?

That's rough, there are so many laws in America, how are you free?

My dear, this is the problem with human governments.
Lawmakers make arbitrary laws, then create gigantic bureaucracy to enforce such laws. The massive government needs ever increasing amount of money to sustain which comes via ever increasing taxes.

End result - total lack of justice, corruption, chaos.

The craziness that is going on in the US and some European countries will eventually end with destruction. There is no other option visible.

While I agree America is a little jail-happy, other countries probably have lower rates because they have stupid laws/policies, too. One guy in Japan murdered and ate a college student. He was released after 10 years, and is now a celebrity appearing on talk shows and talking about how he would like to try it again some time.

Many Central and South American countries have 20 year maximums and no death penalty. Pedro Lopez, convicted of murdering over 100 girls, got 20 years and is now living around Mexico, possibly in the South Western US. Even if he murdered 5% of his admitted (though not convicted) victims, 20 years isn't long enough. He admitted to over 300 murders.

We can easily lower the amount of inmates imprisoned if we just set maximums and release multi-murdering psychopaths, but where do you draw the line?

The college student getting arrested for the nitrous oxide may have been arrested, but did he even receive jail time? That's a more pertinent topic than whether he got arrested or not. So is the question of how long he spent in jail if he did receive jail time. Cutting back on the number of drug-related imprisonments and focusing more on rehabbing them and what not is likely the better bet, but no system is perfect.
