Personally what I like about ATS is I get to read and it lets me think.

I may think "that guys an idiot" or " wow that girl is really smart" but it lets me think.

Whether its a breaking news story, a good conspiracy, ancient myth or some great "where are these photos taken?" thread it gets us to use our brain.

I can only watch so much porn lol...

For me ATS is something to do when im bored...and due to current circumstances im bored often...Not to offend anyone. but lets be honest with ourselves...if we were living full and productive lives...we wouldn't be on here...or the internet in general...
Aside from boredom...The nature of the forums on this site may well be used to attract certain political beliefs...conspiracy theorists..or those unhappy with the government etc....
Obviously if you post on here, people will see it, maybe people you don't want to read what you think...and depending on what you post you could even be breaking the law...or worse you might even be breaking some future law not yet even introduced...I mean didn't I hear some American politician recently call for conspiracy theories to be banned.
So yes I for one am here out of boredom...but beware, your boredom could land you in hot water...One mans rant is another mans threat...
And this is the truth about this website and life on the internet in general...Yes there is free speech..but at what potential cost?
Personally one day I hope to be totally done with the internet...and the TV...I want to be living out in the wilderness away from all the paranoia...including my own paranoia...living instead of existing...

I think I'm maybe somehow, possibly, emotionally connected to the people on ATS, the atmosphere...I might not be U2Uing with you all the time, but I know some intelligent, creative, caring and evolved individuals around here. The thread was made by a site called " # hits the fan 411". A site created years back when ATS was split down the middle.

It probably doesn't even matter though if ATS is really controlled by the DoD or NSA, they can simply create posters here and talk about their favorite subjects.

In theory? It's a place where people from all walks of life come together to share ideas and gain a better understanding of the world, indeed, perhaps the universe, in a fun, safe environment. In practice? It's a boiling cesspool of trolling, Christianity bashing, barely intelligible theories, and America hating.

What purpose do you think it serves?
It used to be the greatest place to find alternative news and conspiracy theories. Now it's mainly just a place for disinfo agents, teenagers, and soccer moms to interject their opinions on things they care about for two minutes and then move on.

What purpose do you think it SHOULD serve?
The purpose that it used to serve.

Should it inspire millions of people to take up arms to overthrow a dictatorship somewhere?
Inspire humans to do make a difference in the world? No, of course not.

What, in your opinion, is the function of ATS other than offering old fools like me a place to chat, to pick up new ideas, or to reaffirm for myself that my thinking is correct (or incorrect)?
You know the old saying, "The inmates run the asylum"? That's pretty much the function of ATS. Crazy people in charge of other crazy people discussing crazy things.

I've seen quite a few comments on how this site used to be this and was good for that, but no more. The writers of these comments either leave or just lurk without participating.

To me, ATS is another source of information. I don't want to limit myself to just a right wing or even a left wing news organization. I am an Independant, so I try to vote for the lessor of two evils.

Lately, I find both Republican and Democrats to be much of the same, with smoke screen issues that are only an illusion for a divided country, which is probably polarized just for the entertainment of all the king's men; honestly, dosn't It seem that once a politician is in office they will just do what they want to do, anyway. Regardless of all their campaign promises.

So, for me, this site is just another tool to help me sift through all the madness.

To both gauge our knowledge and provide, or slowly introduce new fantastical things.

The purpose should be to share and learn and be entertained. To have ignorance denied and celebrate innovation. To agree and agree to disagree. To unite folks from all around the globe and enable us to communicate in a casual manner, without all the cursing and name calling.

ATS is where I go when my paranoia needs to be kicked up a notch or two. It's also a place where I can go and feel better about myself because there are others out there more messed up than I am. Every now and again you get a nice little nugget of information that is useful....but that is so very very rare.

ATS is what you make of it. It's a community, if you wish to engage with it on that level. It's a discussion board or information portal if that is what you need for it to be. It is the sort of thing that ends up fitting the expectations that we, ourselves, impose upon it.

Want it to be informative? It is. Infinitely and amazingly informative. If one looks and discerns for the nuggets of brilliance.

Want it to be emotionally fulfilling? I certainly can be that too. I've been touched by ATS members more times than I can count - a few of those times literally to tears. I've made some lifelong friends here.

Want it to be an awful experience where one can feel crucified and martyred - and get all of the Internet infamy that goes along with being able to go to certain other forums with an "I got banned from ATS...." badge hanging around your neck? It can be that as well, if one tries hard enough.

It's all about expectation sets... whether or not we enjoy our time here or not. If we expect it to stay as magical for us, after years of daily visits, as it was to us during that first visit? We're going to end up disappointed. As the old saying goes, familiarity breeds contempt. All of us go through that particular growth pain here... we all have those moments of burn out where it seems like ATS isn't what it used to be. Truth is that's kind of right. It's not as it was when we found it... It's better. New voices and new ideas appear every single day... we just get too jaded and subjective to accept it as the way of things.

Asking what we think ATS is is actually a very poignant question because it allows us to take a step back and analyze whether or not we're looking at ATS in the right way to maximize our enjoyment of the site. Do we expect it to be what it's not? Do we contribute in a way that matches our own expectations? Are we part of the problem or part of the solution?

In the end, ATS is a website where we all choose to spend at least part of our time. For some it's an office, for others a living room. It's words on a screen that come to matter to us on some level, for better or for worse. Some of us think of it as a playground, others treat it like an outhouse. But for me...

This is home.
