CBC News

More Canadians say they are seeing unidentified flying objects than ever before, with 2012 numbers nearly doubling the record number of sightings recorded in previous years.

In 2012, there were 1,981 sightings, nearly doubling the previous annual record of 1,004 sightings recorded in 2008. There were record numbers of UFOs reported in every province last year except for Saskatchewan and P.E.I.

Keep on recording those UFOs my fellow Canadians!

I'm sure this increase in reports and sightings is largely due to more people having smartphones and small cameras on their person most of the day, being able to record anything in an instant and more people being interested in the subject. UFOs have been a hot topic in the past years in movies and reality television shows like UFO Hunters, getting people interested in the subject and probably encouraging them to try their luck at the night sky with their cameras.

According to the article nearly 2000 UFOs were reported with 7.5% being unexplained and 15% completely explained... 7.5% unexplained is still a pretty big number of cases unsolved.

The Canadian government no longer investigates UFOs and directs all UFO sightings to Chris Rutkowski of Ufology Research of Manitoba, who releases the Canadian UFO Surveys.

Here are the Canadian UFO Survey Data Tables and other information if you're interested!

Say ATS, have you ever had a sighting?

So the other 77.5% are still unknowns?

"The objects people witness come in a variety of forms — from triangles and balls of fire, to the more traditionally ovoid-shaped flying saucers, hovering in the sky."

So much for the ATS poster who said people no longer see flying saucers.

For my sightings go here:

Its lazy people who post crappy reports. People who post sightings with practically no useful information or people who are poor observers. Most reports provide very little useful information. Most reports are nothing more than "lights in the night sky" which might have many possible explanations. Often there is nothing to suggest that the reports are unique or interesting in any way, so even if they are "unexplained" its just because its a bad report or simply a report that suggests nothing unusual.

Its not "suddenly OK to bring up on the media". The media has been covering Rutkowski's annual report every year it gets published. Its pretty much always the same report with the same sort of commentary and coverage.

Nothing has changed.
