A video which appears to show a Syrian rebel taking a bite from the heart of a dead soldier has brought strong condemnation.

US-based Human Rights Watch identified the rebel as Abu Sakkar, a well-known insurgent from the city of Homs, and said his actions were a war crime.

The main Syrian opposition coalition said he would be put on trial. The video, which cannot be independently authenticated, seems to show him cutting out the heart.

BBC News

OK this is sick, I mean really really sick.

I have seen this video and it made me for a moment actually want Assad to win just so his forces could hunt down this sick individual and exact some justice against this guy from the “Independent Omar al-Farouq brigade”

I honestly don’t have more words to describe this barbaric act, right now I am just shocked, I mean I know some messed up stuff goes on in times of war, but this, this is unreal.

Human Rights Watch has reviewed graphic evidence that appears to show a commander of the Syrian opposition “Independent Omar al-Farouq” brigade mutilating the corpse of a pro-government fighter. The figure in the video cuts the heart and liver out of the body and uses sectarian language to insult Alawites. The same brigade was implicated in April 2013 in the cross-border indiscriminate shelling of the Lebanese Shi’a villages of al-Qasr and Hawsh al-Sayyed.

It is not known whether the Independent Omar al-Farouq Brigade operates within the command structure of the Free Syrian Army. But the opposition Syrian National Coalition and the Free Syrian Army leadership should take all possible steps to hold those responsible for war crimes accountable and prevent such abuses by anyone under their command. Any party with the power to do so should do all it can to keep weapons from reaching the brigade. Human Rights Watch repeated its call to the United Nations Security Council to refer the Syria situation to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to ensure accountability for all war crimes and crimes against humanity

The US and it's allies will say it's the Assad Forces, just like the Chemical weapons.

Disgusting exhibition of dis-respect for human life..

I guess war and conflicts do this to people......... Syria appears to becoming a wretched place and what are we all to do about it.....?

Support Assad and the West props up what it wanted to fall.
Support the rebels and the West supports a growth in extremism in a major middle eastern state.

Israel must be wondering when?

When it comes to the Syrian Civil war I have been following it from the start and I have stayed pretty much on the fence in terms of who I support, for example I have a thread about human rights atrocities by Assad’s forces but I also have one about the human rights record of the rebels.

I have tried to keep my threads on Syria for the most part balanced and factual devoid of any personal opinion or bias. Now I know I have not always managed to achieve that but overall I have tried to remain very natural in terms of who I support.

That said, I can honestly say that this video makes me think that the West supporting Assad could be the West supporting the lesser of two evils, I think my neutrality may be failing. This might just be a knee jerk reaction but I seriously cannot see how anyone could support any rebellion that has this going on within its ranks. Even if he doesn’t represent the whole of the rebellion, we seem to hear about a lot of these rebels committing these types of disgusting acts. Now yes I admit that Assad is probably just as bad but after seeing that video, I can’t help but feel he is the lesser of two evils.

Its horrible.
But a "nice" follow-up to the child decapitating a pow(Prisoner Of War), and the picture of a guy barbequing a severed head we've seen before...
Lets hurry up and support these innocent and peace loving "SYRIAN freedom fighters" yeah ?

The timing was epic when the EU announced it recognized the rebels as official representatives of the Syrian People, a day or two after they put a video up of a child beheading a man...

There are rules of war that every Muslim must follow, if that rebel was a Muslim he has at least broken one of them. And that is mutilating a body.

But, I can't tell you how desperate they are, some of them have gone into oblivion and some are insane because of what is happening to them. Imagine your whole family blowing up in front of you and you can't do anything about it. As long as you've never experienced it you won't understand and I don't expect you to show mercy for them.

As long as there is war there will be mistakes and atrocities, that's how people learn. You must know that the rebels or the opposition consists of people from many ethnic backgrounds. Everyone does not think the same way or act the same way.

After seeing what Assad soldiers are doing to their own people, I wouldn't be surprised if people turned cannibalistic. And you shouldn't be surprised either, when humans are desperate and suppressed they'll do crazy things. I think you should give those who are suppressed a good reason why they're acting different.

But, One must always be patient and act according to what is right and forbid what is wrong. As Allah says in the Quran; “O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Qur’an, 2:153)

The greatest help is praying and having patience, No one blames them for what they do but we can only advise them on what to do because we are not in the same state. It's our duty to keep them on track when anger takes them into control.

These are not only some of the sickest rebels in history but also the dumbest, they are only digging their own grave by committing such foul acts, any sane person with morals anywhere in the world will now think twice about supporting these idiots. Reminds me of the rebels in Libya forcing soldiers to eat dogs and human flesh not too long ago, must be of the same group.

[SNIP], You're telling me not to support a nation that's calling for our help? When they're oppressed, dictated and pressured to the ground? You want me to sit by and watch them all die as the 70.000+ did so far? And you call yourself human?

You're going to base the act of one single person as the fact of the whole? You really think humans cut out hearts and bite on them for fun? Doesn't it show what kind of trouble they're in? When you see cannibals eating flesh you think it's normal, but when someone that you "hate" is doing it, they're inhumane and sick?

I agree that it's sick to a degree, but it only shows how desperate they are for freedom, the freedom you've had for a long time and enjoyed since then. You don't want them to have a part of it? Your regime doesn't at least, you're brainwashed in the same way.

But if these rebels take over Syria, they will want to install Sharia and will certainly not allow the amount of religious and ethnic diversity that currently exists in Syria. How will these throat slitting heart eating rebels treat the 10% Christian population? Or the Shia population, or the alawite population?

Wow you're really defending cannibalism huh? No matter what the circumstances honor and respect must always be upheld in war, if one party doesn't have honor how can any honorable person support them? If you support this act of savagery then it truly reflects what kind of person you are.

As a person who is of a minority background and whose people have suffered discrimination and countless attempts at genocide by the majority elite for hundreds of years, I cannot support the same rebels who are calling for the genocide of a fellow minority in Syria which are the Alawites and Christians. Everyday the rebels show their hatred for anything other than Arab Sunni in the Middle East, if the rebels have control of Syria the pain and suffering will only increase for everyone. That being said I also dont believe the minority should control the majority as Assads regime has been accused of, so until I see a true INCLUSIVE of all parties opposition in Syria I cannot support any party.

Which gives more credibility to the fact that this was a manufactured uprising.

In most of these Middle Eastern or Arab countries, people seemed to be happy (or at-least content) regardless of religion.

I'm disgusted at the lack of empathy that Americans have for others.

People lost their minds over the Boston bombings yet seem to feel nothing over mass loss of life elsewhere.

Thank you for that explanation. For a moment there I thought we were dealing with one sick mofu, but now I understand the fellow is just needing a bit of tlc.

Perhaps he would like to come and stay with me for a wee while.

Seriously, you sound like social workers we have who forgive everything anyone does and think that by giving bad people everything they want they will turn good.

Doesn't work, our society is screwed up by social workers and people like you.

If I was in charge I would hunt this animal down and shoot it on sight.

Not going to watch the clip. But I have seen plenty of other videos that show rebels doing evil acts. Just goes to show me that these guys are not true Syrians. They are savage killers who have been hand selected by leaders of the middle east who want Assad out. Im sure they found alot of sick minded killers in Libya back in 2011.
