What if some mysterious entity were to come to Earth, tap into the Earth's core in Africa to provide unlimited energy for the continent and provide unlimited solar power (e.g. space-based, futuristic systems, energy storage etc) and then leave it?

Would that then help Africa?

Would the continent then progress rapidly as it needn't worry about energy needs?

Or would this entity need to do a bit more?

Note, that this entity isn't a totalitarian statist or ultra-socialist. It merely travels the universe to give a gentle encouraging push to groups most at risk, those most in trouble and most poor (i.e. it has no interest in helping Asia or Europe or South America) and supplies small advantages to those most disadvantaged and then it leaves, moving on to the next civilization.

Note:

I forgot to mention that all of the tech wold work perfectly - thus it wouldn't need to fixed or ever touched. In other words, the turbines and solar panels etc etc are all protected by an impenetrable force-field that not even all of the weapons on Earth could destroy for 200 years

The USA would send in every Carrier Group, its whole military might, steal all the goodies and leave. The US Fleet would be attacked by China and Russia on it way home starting WW3 which would end two hours later by the true might of the MAD principal.

The Aliens would return, use advanced tech to deal with the radiation problems and subdivide the planet into estates for rich and famous Aliens.

Yet again, one more foreign power raping the continent of Africa.

How about we just leave the people alone for a few decades and let them live.

Why don't you start telling the biggest rapists like America and Europe? You do realize that it's all self-interest and gross condescending that drives these powers, no? Do you really think the US government and the governments of Europe and China really care or give two shoots about the advancement of the African peoples? You do realize that should the African peoples rapidly advance, this would destabilize the world economy and threaten globalism. A strong Africa is a great threat - hence it is in the United States' best interests for the continent to be quiet and unproductive and cause no great trouble to the rest of the world...whilst sucking it dry, mind you!

The difference is that this benevolent mysterious entity has come to give, not to take away. It traverses the entire cosmos, giving a gentle push to those in the worst positions. It does not simply provide everything for those most disadvantaged - that would be disingenuous and would kill off human ingenuity.

Why?

If nobody posted anything, there wouldn't be a forum!

I think what you should have said is:

"I should stop reading this if I don't want to see it"

Sorry but I thought I made that clear.

Western powers have kept Africa down for a very long time. Now your talking about yet another power coming onto their continent and using them.

They are all bad.

Leave Africa alone for once...go to Iceland.

Didn't you hear me?

This entity isn't using anyone or anything. It's actually giving.

If you think providing sources of unlimited energy to Africa is the same as the US and European powers and China sucking the continent dry, then you'll need to do some reviewing.

And I do believe the Icelandic people are a whole lot better off (an understatement) than the Congolese or the Somalians for example!

I don't think your scenario would change a thing for any person in Africa. The issue there is not a lack of resources. It is just for whatever reason those resources are not efficiently managed and cooperation between nations has been fleeting.

Simply adding new resources would not fix systemic problems. I.M.H.O.

If your scenario happened it would be destroyed by the tribal and religious conflicts that have never stopped in the historic living memory of the continent. Not all problems of the world are the great Satan super powers.

And what happens when you give Africa unlimited power?

Because of Western powers there are nothing but basically warlords running every country. Now these warlords have unlimited resourses to hurt their people even more.

Dumb idea

So then we would need to go further? Reorganize the entire continent?

It is interesting that you say tribal and religious conflicts would still persist - one does wonder how an entire people has survived for so long if, as you say, they're always warring. How has such a destructive peoples survived for so long?

Surely a source of unlimited energy would then provide stability? Then focus can be channeled to creating food sources and learning and advancing politically and economically? Of course the oil companies would tank if the unlimited energy is tapped into by other continents...
(oh, poor Exxon and BP!)

I can't see how that would go on... The people wouldn't need to be under the power of nasty warlords anymore - there would be unlimited energy. Surely they could then focus on creating food sources and learning and creating and advancing politically and economically?

And many warlords still exist, even in the age of neo-colonialism. Indeed, many of these "bad guys" are now just in suits and shaking Obama's hand and China's hand.

The fact is, "aid" is nonsensical. You cannot expect to advance a people by continuously giving them aid. To create, invent and advance, they must learn. Continuously supplying "aid" means you only want one thing: "stagnation". Such stagnation would be in the interest of large conglomerates - indeed, it would be in their great commercial interest. Just imagine if an unlimited energy source was readily available next Monday - massive companies would fall quickly and hard!
(The world economy might also tank sharply - so that's not great...)

Foreign entities giving huge amounts of aid to Africa hasnt helped so far.
Do you think it would make a difference if the aid came from outer space instead?

I highly doubt unlimited energy is "aid". "Aid" is: "Here, let's feed you and clothe you just to make you stay in the same position for decades and not advance and learn and create". "Aid" is actually now destructive - and many have now realized this.

Yes that would work until religious strife and tribal conflicts reared it's head. Look at Nigeria, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Liberia, Angola, Somalia and even South Africa without having to think to much..There are Muslims killing Christians or vise versa everyday. But that is small potatoes compared to the tribal wars.

Hundreds of children are missing and entire villages are said to have been burnt as a huge raiding party from the Lou Nuer tribe swept through a remote area in the east of the country, attacking their neighbours, the Murle people.

The tribal wars in Africa—where over a million people have been killed in the space of a few years in just one region of Congo—is hard to imagine. A million people killed in tribal wars? We are mortified to think of a few thousand who have died in the war in Iraq, and yet in Africa, less than five years ago, a million were killed! And over what? The tribal wars are basically wars of hatred and revenge.

All you have to do is look at each country and see what has happened in the past or is happening today. Until Blacks stop hating Blacks and Religious Fanatics stop hating anyone not of their faith your utopian dreams while nice will not work....Just my opinion. Peace in Africa has about as much chance of happening as your mother ship landing. I for one would like to see either but I figure I will be long burried or creamated before any thing like that happens.

Africa already has everything it needs to become self sustainable. Oil, gold, diamonds, etc... Unfortunately Africa is a conquered land and is kept down for a reason
