Deemed a 'Decade Volano' by the UN for its long history or ongoing activity, as well as in vicinity of huge populations of people.

It's located on the Island of Kyushu about 40 km east of Nagasaki city. Per Wiki, has claimed some 15,000 human lives, to date!

wow, cool video

I think its strange how people live at that base of active volcanoes
I guess the same could be said for active fault lines, but if that mountain is smoking then it's time to GTFO

Amazing!

Nature can be pretty awe-inspiring.

That's crazier than a bag full of cats! Living at the base of an active volcano?!?! Why would a person do that to themselves? Can you imagine how jumpy those people are all the time?

Yikes!

Thanx for sharing it!

43 people died during this incident in June 3, 1991

Two of those killed were volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft who where filming eruptions at Mount Unzen.

Below is a quote from them, filmed the day before their deaths:

"I am never afraid because I have seen so much eruptions in 23 years that even if I die tomorrow, I don't care," Maurice Krafft

Wow so awe inspiring. What a magnificent thing to behold! Mother Nature is as cruel as she is beautiful. Thanks for sharing the video gave me goose bumps. I felt for the Umpa Lumpa running for his life.

I don't know for sure..

but it looks like CGI to me..

Pixelated around the edges of the smoke coming down..

Why does it just stop and go another direction at the end there??

wouldn't it just keep on rolling the same direction..

are those evil faces in the smoke at the end?

Hmmm...

after watching in different modes I have to call FAKE!!!

One of those flows can get very hot indeed, sometimes up to 1000c! It is far, far more dangerous than the lava produced by a volcano, at least then you have a chance of outrunning it, whereas with a pyroclastic flow, you might as well stick your head between your legs and kiss your behind goodbye....

There is always some armchair expert ready to declare everything a "fake" - I swear, I could put pictures of my mum on here and you'd get people declaring it is fake....

The "changing direction" is the flow collapsing under it's own weight, probably with a good chunk of wind thrown in. If you notice, there is a mountain slope to the right as well, which is probably affecting the dynamics of the flow as well.

looks totally fake...

you got a P-cloud coming straight at the camera and then it just says to itself..

ew, "shiny" and changes direction...

yea, o.k. you are right..

this is real..

Not!

This is old footage...way before the CGI that everyone touts as fake.

If you're yelling fake...prove it.

This happened, end of story.

It matters not if this is your thread or not - you're the one making the claims, so if you can't put up, then shut up!

Omg... You just took us to a new level of stupid.

The footage was recorded in 1991... That means is was no where near HD. When you then transcode material like that and put it on the web watching it with a highres monitor you'll get pixelation. Youtube videos are highly compressed even HD videos.

The reason it "changes" directiob at the end is because it by then had deposited so much of itself that when it came to a less steep point of the mountain it lost so much momentum that the wind could affect the remaining dust.

No CGI here... Just plain old amazing mother nature.

But I understand you... The younger generations nowadays take in so much # that you have a hard time distinguishing fake from reality. You probably still think Idol is not a fixed show and that Paradise Hotel is not scripted

Here is a link to another video of the same flow..

It is a video of the 1991 eruption, way before anyone could use any kind of CGI trickery...

If you are not willing to stand behind what you say what is your opinion worth........nothing. It bothers me when posters make claims they are not willing to back up. It kinda pathetic in a way.

To the OP thanks for the vid I have never seen anything like it before.

Not to derail the thread but .... really?? Thanks for giving me a genuine laugh.. you probably don't know but this commercial is from 1990 just a few months before the eruption, got to be fake, sure looks like it. I wonder how much MP his camera has on his phone....

It's footage 22 years old.

I doubt there'd be a person on ATS who hasn't seen this already.... but it's cool to watch it again. I love volcanoes.
