The Peruvian Government is yet again failing to protect the rights of its Indigenous citizens, and if history is anything to go by it is no wonder that the Matses tribe fear for themselves and other nearby tribal peoples. Sarah Gilbertz reports.

These people are at risk of loosing their lands. A Canadian oil company wants to drill hundreds of test sites on their ancestral territory and plans on cutting through hundreds of miles of forest. Many indigenous people around the world around the world have little or no say over their destiny in this modern world. They should be let keep their land and declared as sovereign nations. We let nothing stand in our way of our dependency on oil. We should be learning how to live better from our older societies. Not wiping them out.

Despite promising to protect the rights of its Indigenous citizens, the Peruvian Government has allowed Pacific Rubiales to go ahead with its project, in violation of international law.

“We sent letters to the Government rejecting the oil company but we received no reply”, said Antonina Duni Goya Nesho. “This is our land; this is where we are from. Our leaders have fought with the Government many times, but they must be deaf or they just don't respect us”.

I hope they put a curse on the company. When will our greed end? The rainforests are where we get basically all of our medicines. Without it, we would suffer greatly. We may have intelligence, but not wisdom.
