Mystery Illness Claims the Life of 2 Area Teens, a Third is Critical

An unidentified fatal illness has claimed the life of two teenagers in Texas. A third is in critical condition.

The specialist also said the teens' symptoms included a fever, coughing, pneumonia, violent seizures and respiratory failure. Dr. Syed Ibrahim is Montgomery County's epidemiologist. He said they ran 30 tests on the teens, including checks for rabies and meningitis. All tests came back with negative results, so health experts still have no idea what any of the teens came down with.

They go on to say it does not appear to be contagious, so I assume it is probably bacterial.

3 teenagers in the same school all come down with the same illness. Seems isolated to me. What were the kids experimenting on is my question?

Thats what I was thinking as well, wonder if perhaps they took something or inhaled something, not to sure what chemicals could mimic those symptoms.

I feel bad for their families. It isn't good to have your children die before you. It's also hard to have a sibling die when you are young.

Could it be coronavirus?

2 different high schools, in 2 different counties. The story doesn't mention if they knew each other or not, but my first guess would be yes.

I was watching a documentary about the Flu epidemic of 1918 last night and it metions that most of the victims were teenagers or young adults which is odd for a flu. Could it be something like flu? Maybe with complications arising afterward when immunity is low?

I found this information on swine flu from webmd and they say it can cause seizures in children. Im not sure if this includes teenagers or not.

Like seasonal flu, pandemic swine flu can cause neurologic symptoms in children. These events are rare, but, as cases associated with seasonal flu have shown, they can be very severe and often fatal. Symptoms include seizures or changes in mental status (confusion or sudden cognitive or behavioral changes). It's not clear why these symptoms occur, although they may be caused by Reye's syndrome. Reye's syndrome usually occurs in children with a viral illness who have taken aspirin -- something that should always be avoided.

I looked into Reye's dsyndrom as mentioned in the WebMD quote and came across this little snippit...

In Reye's syndrome, a child's blood sugar level typically drops while the levels of ammonia and acidity in his or her blood rise. At the same time, the liver may swell and develop fatty deposits. Swelling may also occur in the brain, which can cause seizures, convulsions or loss of consciousness. The signs and symptoms of Reye's syndrome typically appear about three to five days after a viral infection, such as the flu (influenza) or chickenpox, or an upper respiratory infection, such as a cold.

Seems quite plausable to me.
