Spare barrel, new firing pin, total cost 120.

Having an untraceable change out to commit crimes with =priceless.

It's a great thing then, that the law abiding smart people know how to make their guns untraceable.

And you guys don't even hear yourselves, do you..

Fascinating.. *spock ears*

this whole 3D gun thing does make me wonder....?

Huh, I got me a $10k 3D printer.....what shall I make....? Hmmm

Shall I make parts for a water well for a third world country.?
Shall I make a new innovative medical device.?

Nah..... I'll make a plastic gun ..!! One which can't be recognised by scanners and one which I will freely distribute the plans of worldwide to all those terrorists my country is scared of......

Do you want to live in a productive world or a manipulated world...?

Adding another way to kill people is just plain dumb....

"Yes, and all the people who didnt bother to read the original article keep saying that as if they're revealing something new and clever."

I'm sure a lot of people are also posting because they believe all information should be public domain and hate the tyrannical illuminati controlled American government that's currently trying to remove our basic freedom.

Yes, removing serial numbers is illegal and will get you a nice warm bunk complete with a buddy to keep you loved at night....whether you like it or not!

But, it is fully legal to build/create your own firearms in the US, no serial required.
You may not sell these without a serial and a tax stamp however.
So have no fear of lil johnny getting one of these with his pokemon cards at 7-11.

You must understand how easy it is to build a forge, even in your backyard out of mud, a hair dryer, and a fuel source. I saw a video a few months back of a 13 year old kid who made his own mud forge!
Cool stuff.

And you dern right I can't wait to get mah hands on a 3DP, I have many more ideas than printing out some weaponry, many many cool things in mind.
It will not be a bad thing, I assure you that I can have access to much more than a printed single shot pistol.
But I have yet to do anything stupid, nor do I ever foresee doing so.
I am a free man because I do not give anyone a reason to take my rights away.

Guns are easy to acquire without handing them out, as long as you do it legally and have a couple of benjamins. There are also non legal means that have been around just as long as there has been weaponry. However, I strongly advise against going this route or even being party to it, due to the whole new roomate/lovemaking problem and such.

The problem here is not the gun, as we had those before and we could create them before, nut the free information and the danger to big corp due to loss of income from trinkets.
Imagine a world where you never had to go to any store!
Advertising bucks down the drain!

Why is making guns via 3D printer any more dumb than making guns the more traditional route? Are you just straight up anti-gun and don't want anyone, anywhere, ever, making guns? If so your opinion on this whole matter is obviously going to be incredibly biased.

So you make parts for a water well in a 3rd world country.... what's the point in that? Do you live in this 3rd world country? You are going to have to pay money to buy a 3D printer, pay money for the materials involved with producing the item, and then pay a ton of money to ship these well parts to a 3rd world country. That's a horribly inefficient way of doing things. It would make more sense to simply send the money to this 3rd world country and have the well built on-site.

Make a innovative new medical device? A 3D printer isn't a magical box that instantly turns you into an inventor. It just makes stuff. You still have to come up with the idea on what to make, if you can design some innovative new medical device, you could have it produced many other ways. The method of production isn't what stops new innovative devices, the lack of new and/or good ideas stops new innovative devices.

You know, advocating untraceable, easily destroyed firearms doesn't really help convince people of your pro gun stance. Just saying...

Untraceable, easily destroyed firearms have been around FOREVER!!
A dremel, a 30 dollar tool found at EVERY hardware store makes the gun untraceable.
As for destroying it, there are many methods.
I worked as a blacksmith for a period, the forge is an excellent tool for destroying ANY evidence, or just a river, or ocean or many other disposal methods.
All these cads do is let the world realize that even though the cat was out of the bag a long time ago, it is definitely out now.

Not to step on your toes but BS-meter went trough the roof when I read your post. Especially after reading you worked as a blacksmith.
Why?

Point 1: You can grind of the numbers with that dremel but acid will expose the numbers again because the numbers are stamped into the metal. This process changes density in the metal and you can make it visible with acid
or
ultrasonic
or
resistance differences in the regions
or
thermographic
or
a pulsating magnetic field producing eddy fields, then read it out.
Yes, you can forge it but will make the weapon unusable.

Point 2: Even if you remove the number, the barrel does its own individual fingerprint to the bullet. There are ways to circumvent this. (Will not describe it here).

You should know that as a blacksmith. So I suppose you did not worked as one, you worked for one. If even that.
No hate, just curious.

Back to topic: Saw it coming, only a matter of time until 3D printers have to have a sort of fingerprint to each part they make.

With all the posts focusing on barrel threading and serial numbers I'm guessing people are watching too much TV.

If the DA's case is so bad that the sketchy and flawed pseudo-science of forensic ballistics is being put into to the play the investigators are already grasping at straws.

And serial numbers? What have they ever proved other than that these numbers exist on this firearm?

If the presence of a weapon or lack thereof is what will make or break a case then the prosecution has already screwed up badly.

I live in Michigan and own guns. All handguns except certain antique guns are supposed to be registered here. Your comment that there are no federal laws governing handguns is a misstatement also. It is illegal for some people who have committed certain crimes to own firearms under some federal laws on the books. There are also requirements for age minimums. I am a member of a gun club and through that a member of the NRA. I want to keep my right to bear arms and that is in Jeopardy now because they are allowing crazies to get guns and allowing weapons to be manufactured by people who can afford to buy an expensive printer and inks.

You can buy many guns for ten grand. I bet the ink to print a gun costs over a hundred bucks also. Why would any honest person, one who can buy a legal handgun, want to have one of these substandard guns anyway. People who can't buy a gun would like to have one I suppose. A street gun used to be three times as expensive to buy as a gun in the store. I knew of a few people who used to sell them. I am guessing that that is still true today. I'm guessing that these printed guns will be available on the street shortly for about three hundred bucks as a "Hot disposable gun"

Many years ago I knew of a few people who sold street guns. They were not afraid of robbing a gun factory or warehouse and killing the guards. I wouldn't want to collect a lot of guns myself, this will attract these kind of people. Actually, these kind of people made loyal friends to those of their kind. As long as you are not on the wrong side of their guns
I learned a lot from these people. I learn a lot from everyone.

While we are keeping everyone honest and objective here, rifling is not really a finger print, nor is it fool proof, in fact in studies done, it has been proven bullets from different guns can be found to be from the same gun, and bullets from the same gun can be found to be from different guns.

It is very open to interpretation from the analist, thus shouldn't even be used in criminal prosecutions, as it is less reliable than a polygraph.

Other than that, I totally agree with the rest of your post, and was about to state as much before you beat me to it.

Star for your insights.

I wouldn't shoot that thing. I wouldn't even want it, looks like a toy. if I was a teen or kid and saw that I'd think it wasn't real.

Weird how people are freaking out believing WW3 is around the corner and then "The Liberator" becomes free online for anyone with a 3d printer

Hmmm, that expalins a lot, I tried to download the program yesterday, Not to make one, but to check out the designs. Im a cadd designer, and engineer, so this stuff intrigues me. My father is thinking about buying a 3-d printer but not for Gun making. Its the future, and I think its takin a lot of these power hungry people by suprise.

I think that this may be a sales promotion to promote 3d printer and ink purchases. I start to look at motive. Commercialism is an interesting study.

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away" was a sales pitch by the apple industry with no evidence initially to back it.

The whipped and smooth potatoes being superior is a lie created by people to justify their buying of expensive beaters back in the fifties.

I can go on and on, people make things seem better than they really are to justify their expenditures. This makes other people buy the product. These guns are a piece of crap, buying one is a waste of money.

Who the hell does the Pentagon and this Govt think they are?

What a bunch of little dictators this Govt has become.
They will not stop until they control every aspect of our lives.

Headline is a sensationalist lie, of course.

The files were taken down by the designer himself, after a request from the U.S. Department of Defense.

The files have not been "scrubbed" from the internet and are available in multiple other places.

I only tell you this, for ATS users too lazy to read the article and are just outbursting after reading the headline and thread title.

Yeah, I am sure that the "request" was just a "pretty please will you take it down".

They can't. He posted an "idea". Unless they deem "ideas" are the same as "physical weapons," they have no case.

More importantly, anyone could create and post blueprints. It's not special technology. It's very ordinary and simple.

There is no way to control this technology.

You'd have to ban all 3D printers. Put a halt to all technological progress. It's impossible to put the genie back into the bottle.

Why are you all so obsessed with gun ownership in America? I understand it's your right and all that, but step back for a second and think WHY??

Is it because your neighbours have one, or maybe your cool friends?

Someone in this thread say they've been through tens of thousands of rounds of ammo?

WHY???????????

You ain't Arnie Schwarzenneger and you sure as hell ain't bulletproof!

Oh that's right... It's to protect you from other people... Who also have guns!

The whole thing is totally ridiculous and as I have said I know it's your right and all that, but the situation is totally moronic!

You all claim to profess peace then on the other side of the coin you cry when your ownership of a handgun is threatened.

Ridiculous!

FG.

It's about ease of use.

Anyone could create a gun long ago...with a lot of work...etc..so the hardened criminal always had a way...

But today, your five year old can print a gun and shoot his sister, in an argument.

Well, for some of us, it's an issue of liberty, not a matter of owning guns. I do not own a gun, never have, and probably never will, but I find this a bit troubling, that the Pentagon would block the flow of information, simply because it enables someone with a tool to make another tool.

Let me tell you, if your 5 year old displays signs of wanting to shoot his sister. Then you and your country has taken "the right to bear arms" (woopty f**king doo!) way, way, WAY too far.
