I don't think it's fair to call him a hero for giving the Police information on the kidnappers whereabouts or a description, as he could have easily felt obligated as he already got himself involved.
The man that took action to begin with is the hero. It's easy to make the decision of helping someone who already took the initiative, especially when they signal you for help and you're curious.
I just view it differently and feel this man has no business being in front of all of the cameras when he wasn't the one that actually went to "rescue" the girls, he just joined after the fact.

10 years ago. He did the crime, did the time, got a job and helped save three women missing for more than a decade. I'll take one of him over a thousand people who try to run him down for a past he has clearly moved on from. Especially considering none of his detractors ever had to overcome a ghetto to be as perfect as they pretend to be.
