13 is WAY too young. I think 16 should be the age of consent. I would put it at 18, but I just don't like the idea of men in their early 20s being punished for having sex with 17 year olds. It's not a big deal imo - like is a 20 year old guy really that much more mature than a 17 year old girl? People of majority age who have sex with young teenagers should get second-degree statutory rape and those who have sex with people younger than 13 should be treated the same way as those who forcibly rape.

All she's really trying to do is differentiate actual pedophilia such as lusting after an 8 year old, from sexual harassment such as lusting after a 15 year old. To apply pedophilia laws to a 19 year old man who has a 15 year old girlfriend who consensually has sex with him IS kind of ridiculous. And it does happen. I imagine she's trying to prevent that kind of thing.

Another sign of a girl having been abused is their speaking voice. That high, squeaky "baby talk" voice some guys think is sexy is there, usually, because the girl was severely sexually traumatized at an early age. They are emotionally stunted, or trapped, at that developmental stage and thus their sound.

Louis C.K., an American comedian, makes a point in one of his shows that perhaps we shouldn't take child-rape so seriously in that maybe then the children wouldn't be killed as often. The children are routinely killed because the perpetrators don't want to get the severe penalties that are attached to the act. If it was more routine and not such a universally condemned act, then they'd be less likely to hide their deeds with murder.

Once through the revulsion, the truth of the thought is evident... though many would argue death is a toss up with a life of fear and pain caused by the violations of children.

Most YOUNG adolescents are intimidated by adults and taught to obey authorities. Rebellion begins a little later. Many times the adults they interact with are also authority figures, teachers, doctors, mentors, law enforcement, people in positions of power over them. The young person feels confused, afraid even if they seem willing, they may think they should "please someone", do be accepted and liked. "She said that "touching a 17-year-old's breast, kissing a 13-year-old, or putting one's hand up a 16-year-old's skirt" are not crimes comparable to gang rapes and murders and "anyone suggesting otherwise has lost touch with reality". However that makes it not a crime?! Ok, then stealing, vandalism, animal cruelty etc, is not murder, so no big deal either.

In relative terms powerful adults are being PERSECUTED by powerless 13 year-olds? Sounds like an oxymoron! Having once been a young adolescent myself, I can recall thinking I cannot wait until I can have control over my own life, so that I do not have to endure abuse from "old men" that had control over my life. You cannot imagine the feeling of betrayal you feel from people who you were told had your best interests at heart and oh yes, they love you and you should try it, it feels good no matter how much you did not want to. I do not know of any 13, 14 year olds, that are sexually attracted to anyone over 20. If they are it is usually attributed to having already been molested, and have become sexualized before they were emotionally and mentally prepared.
I never felt I had a childhood. Old men who already had their life, should have the option to control a young person's life for their own sexual enjoyment, because their sexual gratification is a priority over a young adolescent's mental and emotional health? Actually it's exceedingly rare for pedophiles to murder children. The cases that do happen tend to get national attention, but the vast majority of pedophiles do not cross the line into serial killing. Doesn't make their crimes any less sick, but most of them don't go that far.

I agree with Louis CK that the fact we consider rape so serious (like equal to murder) might do more harm than good. It also makes the victim afraid of telling because they are worried people will treat them differently for it, and they will become an object of scornful pity.

Old men make the laws.

Very odd that it is a female requesting these changes. Only thing that I can think of would be a motive for such an outrageous request is that perhaps there is someone in her immediate family who has committed such things or someone close to her. That way they won't get into trouble if the law was changed to allow this type of sick behavior.

In the UK, in such a situation, nothing could be done to prosecute the bloke unless the girl makes a complaint herself. The Police could walk in, mid-coitus and have him bang to rights, but if she is above the age of 14 then they cannot do anything at all without her say so.

It's something every teenage boy was very familiar with when I was a lad. It is quite hard to find a girl exactly your age, so invariably you'd end up with someone younger (or older, if you're lucky!). My first GF was 14 months younger than me and we did the deed quite a few times prior to her 16th - even her parents accepted that it was going to happen and just insisted we were safe when we did so.

Ironically, after we split up (she was 18 then) she met a South African illegal who was several years her senior (mid 20's), fell pregnant by him, married quickly (I suspect passport needs....) and then got the inevitable divorce, all by the time she was 21!

13 is too young, I think 15 is ideal as an age of consent. 15 is enough to prevent actual harmful molestation while not yet pandering to those who think merely "creepy" things should be illegal. 18 is too high, IMHO.

Most importantly, there have to be near-age exceptions (Romeo and Juliet laws). Because it is utterly stupid that two 15 year olds who have consentual sex should be criminals. Such cases are hardly ever prosecuted, but still it should be legal even on paper.

One thing I always found odd was that in cases of two underage persons (or even on slightly over and one under) it is nearly always the male that is prosecuted..... There does seem to be an element of sexism in that they always presume the male is the one who broke the law and the female the "victim".

Technically, if my ex felt malicious, I could fall foul of the very thing this Barrister is saying. At any time in my life, if she felt aggrieved for whatever reason, she could make a complaint and I could be arrested for engaging in sexual acts with a minor and, if found guilty, have to sign the sex offenders register.....

For what it's worth, William Roache (Ken Barlow of Corry fame) is being hard done by, I think.

At the time of the alleged offence he was 21 and she was 15, just under the age of consent. If he did have relations with her, even willingly, he is guilty of Statutory Rape whether she consented or not as she is below the age of legal consent.

It is entirely possible that not only was she willing, but she probably lied about how old she was. It was something that we were worried a lot about as young men in night clubs, as there would often be girls under the age of 16 in these places with fake ID (or just not checked by dumb door staff as they were pretty). If you are in a place were you expect people to be of a certain age and a pretty girl chats you up, then you end up ravaging here into next week, I think it is very harsh to then prosecute said person if it turns out the girl was under 16.... You're not exactly going to be asking for her ID when she is giving you the come on.....

When I was in Germany, around 8-10 years old, we used to have "peep shows" and some light touching with some of the girls of about the same age.
