The problem with any arbitrary age is that it never fits everyone...theres some 13 year olds with good heads on their shoulders i'd trust having kids more than some 30 year olds so it really comes down to a point where most of the people are trustworthy of being allowed to have sex with enough knowledge and understanding of what it means

Really? I suppose you have a source for that information.

Now before you all start calling me a monster I would point out that there is perhaps even more important factor and that is the mental ability to comprehend the act itself and have the sexual maturity to understand the act. I Don’t think that 14 year olds have that maturity and I don’t even think that 16 year olds have it either, I know I didn’t. As such I believe the age of consent should be 18, but even that is pushing it, this factor creates quite a interesting argument.

As in most things related to humans, it depends. In this case it depends on what you mean by "maturity to understand the act", because if you are talking about consequences, many people older than 18 do not have it.

So what do I think of what this barrister has to say about lowering the age of consent to 13, quite frankly I think she should be stripped of her right to practice law for such stupidity.

In Spain it's 13, but Spain has a lower teenage pregnancy rate than the UK.

You will note above I have stressed the importance of sexual maturity but more so than that we need to enforce a higher age of consent to protect children from dangerous individuals. Any attempt to lower the age of sexual consent should be challenged in the strongest possible way.

I don't think that lowering the age of consent would solve any problem and only lead to turning some crimes into consent problems.

We need to keep our kids safe from these old men this barrister is protecting!

Don't forget about the women, not all child molesters are men.

The age of consent at the Vatican came into being in 1929 they basically stole a whole bunch of Italian law and at the time the age of consent was set at 12. Officially it has never changed however there is one clause of Vatican law that states it is 14 for a girl and 16 for a male upon wedlock. So depending on how you interpret things its either 12, or its 14 for a girl and 16 for a male. Really though I was just making a point.

Age of consent is lower in the Vatican than it is in the UK

I agree with you about the capability to understand the act and how some people over 18 don’t have that capability either, but you could say that some people younger than 18 do have that capability. I have a personal opinion that it should be set at 18, if you disagree higher or lower then that’s a matter of personal opinion.

On the issue of Spain having a lower age of consent and having lower teenage pregnancy than the UK, I really don’t think that is a good justification for lowering the age in the UK. There are allot of other social aspects at play that give us such a high teenage pregnancy rate and it is these that are the problem, not the age of consent. Like you say yourself that would probably not fix the problem and I agree but I do disagree with it as a compression.

And yes we do have women child molesters I know that, you know I know that, really don’t see any need for that comment.

This is horrifying, especially when you consider the human brain's development.

The frontal lobes don't fully mature until about age 21....this is the thinking and reasoning section. When you hit the early teens your limbic system of the brain takes front seat and its primary concern can be seen as the question, "Am I loved?" It's why teens are so concerned about social status and the like.

Lowering the age of consent to 13 means teens in an emotionally vulnerable state would be easy prey. They aren't thinking rationally and the promise of "I love you" might prove irresistible

Sorry if this is less than coherent, I'm on some strong pai medicine and yeah

I just have to wonder...who this woman knows...who she is protecting...(some of them people in high places no doubt); and I am just wondering too ...how sick is she in her own private life.

Honestly...people like her are to me vile and wrong thinking. She wants to exploit children more; and make it easier for sexual predators.

I would like her to go somewhere and disappear....

The graveyards of the USA. have many 12 year old mothers in them. When there was a lack of females, the poor married a homesteader where you could marry at 12 years of age. Some of these girls were just kids, even though they were post pubescent they died in childbirth. You can see that childhood wasn't invented back then.
In many countries the age of consent is still 12 ie. France and Spain and of course the Vatican. The prosecutions of these old men, and the time that the crimes were commited, were back in the swinging era when we supposedly became sexually liberated. Plus the fact many underage girls didn't look underage and were frequenting adult venues. My mates and I were sticking on false beards and going to dimly lit pubs at thirteen. This problem wont be solved, if you can claim a certain person did something to you when you were underage, and this person is now rich and you will get victim compensation, then the whole thing becomes screwed. How the heck after all the time that's gone by can it be proved one way or another. As soon as you reached maturity the charges should have been brought. Certainly not fifty years later! all this does is feeds the publics taste for scandal. The laws as they stand, leave a big hole that has got to be sorted out.

That's the problem, if it's a matter of personal opinion then that means that it's something that cannot be measured and cannot be specified in a law without giving a margin for interpretation.

On the issue of Spain having a lower age of consent and having lower teenage pregnancy than the UK, I really don’t think that is a good justification for lowering the age in the UK.

I didn't say it was.

There are allot of other social aspects at play that give us such a high teenage pregnancy rate and it is these that are the problem, not the age of consent.

That's why I pointed that Spain has a lower age of consent and a lower rate of teenager pregnancies, as it shows (to me) that there's more to it than just age of consent (obviously).

Like you say yourself that would probably not fix the problem and I agree but I do disagree with it as a compression.

"A compression"? I don't understand it.

And yes we do have women child molesters I know that, you know I know that, really don’t see any need for that comment.

I don't know what other people know unless they tell me, and I have seen people that think that only men are child molesters.

If you have a different opinion then that is fine, but I would rather you state your opinion other than bash mine, I welcome others stating their opinion I think it makes debate so much more engaging.

I think you have been a little selective with what you have quoted me on, I do recognise for example that you don’t say that a lower age of consent will fix the pregnancy problem but this is not reflected in your selective quotes. On the issue of women child molesters I think you stating the obvious and in my first post I am talking in the contest of the men the barrister is protecting.

I can’t help but feel like you’re just hunting for a debate, state your views and I will happily debate.

Ps I mean to write comparison

Well I am genuinely asking you to state your opinion on this so we can engage and debate after all that’s what we’re all here for.

What I am saying is that so far you have been really quite critical of my views on this topic, which again is fine, I welcome a challenge, its just that when you don’t state your views it makes some of your criticisms more difficult to comprehend.

I apologise if I misinterpreted your post I am just looking for a discussion as this is a interesting yet disturbing topic of conversation.

So let me ask you this, what do you think about this barrister arguing that the age of sexual consent be lowered to 13?

Psychopaths, sociopaths and narcissists are everywhere in society. Learn to recognise their behaviours. They are all grouped together in the same section of the psychiatric diagnostic manual that all medical professionals utilise to diagnose mental illness.

Know that a common trait shared by all three is a huge need for their own ego/psyche to be adored and loved and recognised. I would like to suggest that the woman who made the comments at the centre of discussion within this thread could be classified as having a serious mental health issue.

What we need to be doing is raising the age in an attempt to better protect Children from the actions of predators such as paedophiles and paedophile protectors. Another common trait of psychopaths, sociopaths and narcissists is that while they can appear to be educated and knowledgeable and thus are often in positions of authority - they actually do not possess an intellect. What this means is that they do not synthesize information - they merely have a great knack for sucking up information and spitting it back out to look like they know what they are talking about.

This woman needs to be recognised for what she is - someone who definitely does not have the best interests of Children as her priority. It appears to me that her priority is to protect 'old men' - why????!!!! Society as a collective conscious must NEVER allow these people to be successful - NEVER!

Much Peace ...for all Children everywhere...

Simple google search would have given accurate info, took about three seconds:

While the Vatican State has not made its own complete separate criminal code, and generally uses the Italian criminal code that was in effect at the time of the Lateran Treaty, there are exceptions to this rule. The "Law of the Source of Law" of the Vatican State requires that any Italian laws must first defer to divine law, to Papal decrees, and to canon law. As the Vatican understands divine law, all sex outside of marriage is illicit, and therefore the only lawful consent that may be made for sexual relations is the consent between a husband and a wife. Canon 1083 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law states that "A man before he has completed his sixteenth year of age and a woman before she has completed her fourteenth year of age cannot enter into a valid marriage." [87] Thus, assuming the couple is married, the minimum age of consent for lawful sexual relations according to Vatican law is 14 for females, and 16 for males.

Source:Wikipedia

In keeping with the thread, i think the age of consent should be 20 years old with a 1.6 year grace period for both parties.

I am glad they have started an investigation. Hope she gets fired.

Is this the part where feminism in it's quest to remain relevant, begin to act out and stuff? Is that person even a feminist? Is the world insane? At 28(today), looking at adult material scares me sometimes, I mean yadda yadda yadda, I come across a model that is 18,19ish and they kind of look too young, it freaks me out as it ought to. I guess it is the thing called "getting older".

Seriously, I remember when I was 13/14 and 18 year old gal's look so old, now late 30's - 40sih gal's look like that.

I can't understand way older people, with way younger people; or rather trying to understand it makes me want to vomit, and I don't feel like vomiting now.

This person advocating this needs to be stripped of any office, appointment ,bureaucratic responsibilities or titles.

This woman needs to be fed to hungry sharks!! She is off her head!

What is she thinking? You finish your exams at school at 15, how many kids will drop out of school because of pregnancy? This is just making being a paedophile easier and I won’t stand for it!

I have an 8 year old daughter and my mind can’t even comprehend my little girl doing them things at 13!!
