There has been a marked increase in volcanic activity the last decade or so.
At least it appears that way to us ignorant humans, and considering we don't really have much historical data it's impossible to tell how often such
It is clear that Earth has always been very volcanic and active, some periods more than others obviously.
Although I do not think anything fatally severe will develop, I do agree that we are going through an "active phase" currently, at least compared to
the "less active" period prior to it.
The problem here is that we are forced to make guesstimates from very limited data.
We don't know if there are magma-cycles on some geologic time scale.
We don't know if this phenomena occurs often or rarely, or even how many periods of increased activity have occurred in the last million years. It
could have been a few or it could have been hundreds of instances. Impossible to tell.
We need more historical data to compare and contrast with.
Lacking that information means we actually don't have a clue what we are talking about.
