Question for all the parents here standing on their soapbox announcing that they don't allow their children to play these games with all the foul mouthed brats... Do you send you kids to public school? I learned most if not all things wretched not from tv or video games, but from my fellow school mates. Its been almost 20 years since I graduated and it was horrible back then, I can only imagine the crap these kids are submerged in now days.

-Personally I think it was the game "Dungeons and Dragons" or perhaps that evil "Rock and Roll" music.

Study the "satanic panic" and read the articles and books of the time- Note the "experts" (and then look what has come out regarding them in the past 20+ years) who were cited in the media.

Maybe it was the graphic violent video game Mortal Kombat" (that drove many to Violence) or Ice T's "Cop Killer" song with Bodycount.

-Anyhow. Enough of the blame. Clearly this was a Dungeons and Dragons "Satanic murder" (and if this was the 1980s that would be the excuse and Christian media would be making this kid a "star" for converting publicly and schooling the rest of us on how Games make people kill.

Yeah, pretty much. I make sure to dish out regular warnings to my friends (been gaming since gaming began lol) in terms of kids, online gaming, internet use and more. With more and more games turning to a free-to-play marketing model, it's just making it worse. One of the games that I played was Team Fortress 2 and the number of younger kids were pretty infrequent until Valve changed its business model for the game. When it went free-to-play, it was like the entire game was filled with 12-13 year olds. On one hand, the inundation made servers a bit more polite (in fact, these kids will be a lot more likely to ban some jerk for sexually harassing me than pre-free-to-play servers) but the number of times where I've heard an adult say that they were going to rape one of them also increased. Keeping the kid off the mic = very wise. Way less abuse that way. The overall problem with the free-to-play models is that it makes parental control a whole lot harder. The number of 12-13 year olds playing TF2 on any given day probably increased a hundred fold once a parent having to buy it for them was taken out of the equation.

From what I understand (or am told) CoD MW is a whole lot worse. Haven't played that one myself as a good chunk of my friends on steam have told me to avoid the game like the plague due to the community and that's saying something because they know I'm toughened to stuff. (Misogynists just make me play harder and even better lol. I play until they rage quit.) To me, hearing that warning from about 40+ different gamer friends says that it must be really freaking bad. I've always wondered why some fps games have more toxic communities than others.

I'd say it's worse than what we experienced, based on what my daughter tells me when she comes home from her elementary school. In the 4th grade, a girl tried pushing her out of the bus window in an attempt to kill my daughter. Different girl was threatening to stab students and was expelled after threatening to stab their teacher. This year, several boys have taken to threatening to stab other kids though notably, they are stabbing other kids with things like rulers. Pretty bad and we have all to frequent talks about it when she gets home. If I could, I'd home school her. That said, she is a gamer but I still don't let her play online video games because what she hears at school still does not rival the depth of depravity that I've heard uttered online.

I don't think it's just video games or diet or violence and sex so embedded in culture that some have become conditioned to it being normal. I don't think it's inconsistent boundaries or entitled attitudes of some youth. I think it's all of this combined.

First, the brain is a complex chemical and electrical system. Plenty of research exists to show an association between distressing behaviors and food attitives, sugar, and hormones. I've seen it myself with kids. What we put into our bodies is assimilated into our cells and because our brains need food to survive it uses what we give it. To think too much of any of these things won't alter behavior is to deny empirical evidence. Even trying an experiment with yourself to see how you feel when you eat only organic low glycemic foods for a month is interesting (ive tried it and definitely feel different - less on edge with a healthier outlook).

Then you have kids seeing violence and sex in just about everything. I knew a kid long ago who became addicted to porn and raped his cousin stating his addiction started when he walked into a Victoria secret store. Blame it on women's garments being sold using attractive models - no but it's interesting to study variables and how they mesh together to create a perfect storm. Addictions come in all forms, gambling; substances; video games; sex, etc. Who knows if he had developed addictive tendencies but my guess is yes. At minimum addicted to highly stimulating experiences.

Then there is attentive and responsible parenting which I believe can override many problems (not all but many). If I heard my kid tell me they wanted to kill someone I would absolutely not let this ride. We would be having a deeper discussion to gain more info. That kid would be in therapy, I would be on alert, and they certainly wouldn't have access to a gun.

Balance is key with all things. Don't let your kids live off of Doritos and Pepsi. Don't let them play video games 8 hours a day, make kids use their imaginations. It seems as if instant gratification is the norm. When I was a kid our days were spent exploring, building forts, playing in the creek, picking berries, and bonding. When I take my son camping he struggles after a couple of days because he feels "bored". This just started this last year and it bothered me since he was agitated and it was almost as if he felt distressed as if he "should be doing something more". I've paid attention and see this with just about every young person now - too much down time creates a sense of panic. He and I talked about it and did some exercises in slowing down the mind and being still. It was then that I saw a bit of a shift in that he was able to find things to do that we're not highly stimulating. It's when the novelty of the experience runs out that I've seen kids act out behaviorally (and in the case with this boy his stimulating experience was denied him). The idea of good parenting has shifted from making sure dinner is on the table by 5, throwing ball, and to bed by 9 to giving kids new toys and insuring they are entertained.

I'm sure kids killed their parents before all of these things but I do believe aggressive behaviors are linked to a storm of hormones, brain chemistry alterations, instant gratification/constant stimulation, visual and auditory images, and parents ability to mediate these things in a world that has changed significantly in the last 2-3 generations. Youth violence has increased. Throw into this a global community rather than a local one and the world becomes very big and less personal.

-I think you are right (troll Video) but there are some "real" ones out there.

But spoiled brats have always existed. I had a friend who threw his Computer and books (ruined everything) and threw a temper tantrum when his Mom said we (his friends) had to leave. This was in the 1980s when Computers were VERY expensive and most didnt have them. This kids parents were sooooo cool, too. I wanted them as my parents (now I KNOW better) since they essentially gave him everything he wanted and barely any rules. he tripped out, smashed things and went nuts because his Mom was tired of us lounging around his bedroom ,eating their food all weekend.

He had a new Computer the next month.

Later on in life his Mom bought him convertible. During an argument he sliced the Top off with a sword (that will teach his MOM. ruining his own car...) and once beat the hell out of his little sister and his folks covered it up so as not to involve authorities.

-This guy was real mellow and cool to friends, but his family was treated like crap... Now, this guy is nearly homeless, cannot keep a job, his family FINALLY quit putting up with him and his life is a wreck- This guys folks would have done ANYTHING for him. he could have went to any University and they would have paid. He was never required to have a job and constantly given Money.

-The rest of out "Group" played the same games as he did, played Dungeons and Dragons and listened to the evil Rock and Roll. None of us turned out like him.

The difference was in the way we were parented- NOT the things we enjoyed doing/playing.

Parents likely couldn't afford proper psych care.

There is a large portion of people who deny professional help because of cost and stigma. In my opinion this is the sad result.

I'd say more stigma than cost.

William crooks says that he and Gretchen allowed Noah to play violent video games. He also says Noah showed some violent behavior throughout his childhood, including pulling all of his hair out and destroying furniture with knives.

Violent behavior throughout childhood so pretty safe to assume that it wasn't CoD that made the kid violent. Pulling out all of one's hair and stabbing furniture with knives is not normal. What baffles me is, like Lanza's mom, they thought that buying the kid a rifle was a good idea when it had to be clearly evident to both of them that the kid had a. severe self control issues and b. a lifelong tendency towards violence, both self and externalized. I'm sure that they thought that both the games and the guns would be an outlet for the kid and that they were helping them...what a horrible way to learn a lesson.

Okay, I just read like 10 articles about this case.

First off, she was a Nurse (which make damn good money and have good healt care)- BUT not just a run of the Mill Nurse- She was so good she was used during relief efforts during Hurricanes and such. She was also a Full time student. studying towards her MASTERS degree.

The father also worked (no idea where)

Their Home looks immaculate. These people had money.

The Son threatened to kill his mother before but the father thought "he was joking around" and they bought the kid a firearm even while exhibiting violent behavior.

-This wasnt a lack of available money for care- This was parents sticking their heads in the sand and creating a problem which WOULD have been societies problem but ended up being their own worst nightmare.
EDIT/Add- This burns me up...See this very easily could have turned into another schol shooting where the idiot parents would have said "he was a good boy..." - I know the type of parents. Saw them often growing up. THEIR kid could never do wrong... caught with drugs in the bedroom? It was their "friends" influencing them and the evil peer pressure. Caught skipping school? It was their "friends" influencing them. Etc...etc... These were usually the worst kids also. But Mom and dad refused to believe junior could ever be doing these things on his own) -
And then games are blamed. =/

dreadful.

Having played computer games, basically all my life I can safely say the only effect it has had on me is my increased enjoyment of elektro music, healthy competition, and as a form of stress relief.

It genuinely makes me cringe when people say ... "Maybe it was the game?"

Absolute nonsense. The only problem here is undisciplined kids living in a world of instant gratification with almost zero satisfaction.

His dad should of had a serious talks on his thought of killing his mum also and investigated that thought.

Blame the parents? For buying a game????
Let's blame mental illness here...either newly developing or undiagnosed.
He is at an age where mental illness makes an appearance...let's investigate before we start blaming these poor parents.

He most likely would have had some kind of episode...with or without the game.

Really? You're going to blame the parents?

I'd certainly blame the parents for the way the kid developed. If your kid was so attached to a game that he tantrums when you took it away, would you call that a parenting success? I wouldn't. I'd call it dysfunctional and counter-productive to a healthy life.

Even if there was some kind of psychological disorder here, is the kid meant to self-diagnose? No, the parents are entirely responsible for bringing their kid up, and if they thought there was something wrong they should have sought professional advice.

I'm not saying it's the parents fault, but if this kid was brought up to be less attached to a game than real-life then maybe this wouldn't have happened.

Oh yeah, and don't buy children guns that can kill people. That too

Kids are becoming little bullies these days because parents aren't 'allowed' to punish them physically, and aren't really sure how to raise them effectively without that physical incentive to behave. Kids get away with anything. You see it all the time - a kid screaming and throwing a tantrum at the supermarket and the parents just shaking their head in disbelief at what they've allowed to happen.

When I was a kid I knew that if I did something bad it would make my parents upset, so I didn't do it. I was able to manage my emotions and think about others. Kids today have been allowed to become selfish and unruly by parents who don't entirely know what they're doing.

I don't have kids yet, but they certainly won't be crying themselves to sleep because Daddy took CoD away.

Yeah I'm actually surprised at how many parents we have on here professing that their little angel doesn't do those things. This effect will surely be greatly increased considering kids as young as 6/7 have smart phones with full access to the internet now.

Sad world we live in.

These kind of people show up more and more, massacres, children killing other children... I remember reading this article when this teenage girl killed a younger girl and after what happened she wrote in her diary that it felt "ahmazing" being in control of someone elses life. This is what the people are taught everywhere, on the news, TV shows, computer games, novels... I find it really sick that people really enjoy the Hunger Games so much, the message in the movie is really disgusting "teen agers killing each other for nothing more than sport and others amusement". All the zombies and robots you see in movies are just a metaphor for how people behave these days... driven by emotions and impulses, no reasoning whatsoever. And the religious priests were criticizing the Harry Potter series for endorsing witchcraft and wizardry to children, but they have nothing against all the gore and blood shed you see in most of the movies.

Man...

Left utterly speechless by this story.

My view is that indeed acts like this have been commited for centuries and like others have mentioned it was blamed on things like games and movies, comics and rock, rap and heavy metal music. Also another that often gets over looked is table top role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder as I play both of these.

Not counting goblins and orcs amongst a plethora of other fantasy and horror based monsters my kill count remains ZERO as well, a big fat nil.

I also play video and computer games, many of which contain adult themes. For instance one of my personal favorites has always been Fallout, a very violent and abrasive game.

In my personal expierience games have not affected me to the point that I would commit such an unspeakable act; something so vile and disgusting as to literally repulse me.

What i find frightening is that the kid says he didn't know what came over him and that he just wishes she would get up and hug and kiss him. Chilling.

Why is Call of Duty or video games even getting discussion in the press and on forums so far as this nutters actions are concerned?

If he snapped after his mum took away a plate of salad there would be no discussion about the effects of salad.

This kid is clearly deranged and video games had nothing to do with it.
