Maybe he finally figured out that there was more downside than upside to his plan. Maybe he only wanted to keep his name in the news because he was starting to believe his own press releases. He has nothing going for him other than being an outspoken voice of a few who think he has good ideas. I think he's a self serving publicity hound who is to be ignored.
