It's one thing to picket homosexuals and soldiers and heck, even hip-hop "artists"...but it will be quite interesting if this happens. The Fundie Extremists will not only prove that SLAYER fans are right to hate Christianity they will learn that GOD prefers true-hearted hate over lame-ass self-righteous hate.

I suggest that rather than get violent, SLAYER should get LOUD. Do you think the Fundies could tolerate this:

Something tells me..they are going to pick the wrong group of people to picket a funeral with, one of these days. That's not a Church near as much as it's an incestuous, inter-bred family with all the common sense that bloodline might suggest it has. ...and I'm not joking or being mean. Anyone can look them up for details and see that's a pretty literal description of the little hate cult they have going there.

I wonder how Slayer fans will react. Insta-Mosh Pit for the WBC? Hey, that would even be something of an honor to the subject of the service, wouldn't it? (grin)

R.I.P., Jeff Hanneman.

I hadn't even caught the news that this happened.
So many names are being lost ... Sad things to see. A spider of all things. I HATE spiders.

This is the first, last, and only time I will ever write these words:

Fred Phelps and family, I strongly urge you to follow through with your plans to harass Slayer and their countless, long haired, angry, potentially psychotic fans. I think this is the best decision that you have ever made. I fully support this choice and plan to rejoice, in my own way, as the news reports upon the results of your, ummm, adventure."

( To the Slayer fans... No mercy )

So they've decided to picket a thrash metal band?

Ok, go ahead, for once I am not annoyed about what the WBC is doing, can't wait to see how this turns out. Video of the event will be fun to watch (hopefully).

Oh wait, they're picketting a members funeral.
Now I am annoyed and very dissapointed in WBC again. Why do people do that? Its disrespectful. And its not just the WBC that does picketing at funerals, people did it at Margaret Thatcher's funeral as well.

EDIT: In my opinion it should be illegal to picket at funerals. Anyone who does it should be arrested, removed from the area, and charged with disrespectful behaviour.

Jeff Hanneman r.i.p. who wants to take bet on weather or not these guys have the testicular fortitude to show up within a mile of the funeral. Slayer glorified violence and satanism and the downfall of Christianity in almost every song. I should know I have every album from show no mercy to god hates us all. Can you imagine what a couple hundred emotional slayer fans would be capable of? Bad meets evil.

Ha ha. Inter-bred.

You got that right.

They probably need to be cleaning up their own closets before they pick up a sign.

For reals, they just need to get their butts kicked.

Where is the sign-up sheet?

\m/ I'd like to think that Jeff, Dimebag, Mr. Steele, and that bass player guy from Deftones (Cheng I think) would gladly take a break from their eternal jam session to watch their Slaytanic friends dole out a proper asswhoopin to those bozos. They'll learn real quick not to mess with a bunch of mourning, war obsessed, pissed off heathens with nothing to lose \m/

If I had to guess from what will happen, based on my experience with the Slayer crowd from the last 15 years (not sure how many shows I saw, but I would guess about 10 or so) the event will start out comical enough. Half-drunk fans posing and throwing the goat next to humorless WBC members holding "GOD HATES SLAYER" signs for hilarious souvegnier photographs. Later, when people are REALLY wasted, it will probably turn violent if the WBC doesn't get a clue and leave. I wouldn't be at all surprised if rubber bullets and tear gas are used by local police.

To put it in perspective, I never once saw a band open for Slayer and receive anything but hate. They usually were booed, pelted with thrown objects, and generally dismissed by the crowd in every possible way. Now imagine if the singer of the opener band jokingly said "Slayer sucks!" during the their set. If he survived the initial barrage of shoes, water bottles, and dismembered human body parts that would be thrown at him he would still need a police escort out of the building, and would probably be kicked out of his OWN band just for breaking one of the cardinal rules of metal: Don't ***k with Slayer.

If that was how we treated the opening bands at the shows I shudder to think what will happen to these suckers. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I almost feel bad for WBC because they probably have no idea how dangerous the beast known as "Slayer fans" can be on a good day.

I will admit they are brave, if there's anyone you don't want p*** off, it's a slayer fan.

All we need now is some diehard Deicide fans to show up and we'll have a battle royale.

I'd like to see the shoe on the other foot; let slayer fans unite and march to these fanatics' Sunday sermon and shout 'Slayer hates God!' and see how they like it.

Poor Jeff died a long and agonizing death, I'm sad to see him go, but at least his pain is over. If these WBC picket at the funeral they are as despicable as they claim Slayer to be.

Slayers lyrics were more pointed at the contradiction and hypocrisy spread by some sectors of the church, and all the WBC is doing is reinforcing this point.

LOL, I think all the Slayer fans have teenagers about now and have mellowed way out. I could be wrong. We all go through our rebellion and anarchy but then we grow up.

Just sayin...

"All the Slayer fans" INCLUDES teenagers, and teenagers are as likely to throw a punch as anyone if not more so. One of the remarkable things about the crowd at their shows was the age span of the fans. Even the old-head fans are hardly a mellow bunch. They are bike riding, headbanging, hard-drinking brawlers. If listening to metal was just a rebellious phase for someone they probably won't be taking the time to attend the public funeral services (if there are any). It will be hardcore fans.

Maybe I spoke out of turn there. I was never a Slayer fan but I knew of their music. I guess it lives on and they have new fans now.

It is kind of like my kids getting into old music from when I was a teen.

In the last 5-10 years it was quite common to see mother, father, and kids all together at the Slayer show. It was also common to see a friend from 10 years ago who doesn't get out to any shows anymore due to career and family but makes an exception for Slayer. In its own twisted way it was very beautiful, if you were able to overlook the mass vomiting and random violence.

Metalheads are notorious for being snobbish and critical of everything, including other metal bands. We love to analyze and classify bands in to various sub-genres and argue about these classifications and whether or not a band is playing true metal or just sounds heavy. Slayer stands out in my mind as the one band that is universally loved. If James Hetfield died tomorrow and WBC decided to picket funeral I don't think the remaining Metallica fans would be a threat to anyone. Slayer is on a different level when it comes to the respect of fans and other musicians, and Jeff was the man who wrote most of the music. I honestly hope they are smart enough not to show their faces. They'll either get beat up, or they will shoot someone in self defense and REALLY get beat up.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Westboro has nothing to do with the Christian Church outside of registering themselves as a religion (which anyone can do for a state license fee). In fact they are mainly a single family of lawyers who cause these stirs to then sue under violations of “freedom of speech”. I tire of Christians being bashed by religion haters, because of the actions of these folks who in no way represent mainstream Christianity. The best thing that anyone can do is stop talking about these attention seekers, but the anti-religion crowd just loves to egg them on to new lows. If people would simply ignore them, they would run out of money, and fade away.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

You are so wrong. We don't hate you. In fact we respect followers of Christ. He had a wonderful message.

But the theocrats, and dominionists, and the freaking crazies that need to have the ten commandments posted at the courthouse, I have a real hard time taking them seriously. They. Don't. Get. It.

R.I.P Jeff Hanneman. You gave many smiles to many people. I for one hope this "march" against you doesn't go ahead, as it would take away from the moment that truly is.
