I wish to share this with you.

"Your life has to be lived not for yourself, but for the sake of all
those with whom God has ordained you should come in contact from time
to time. The purpose of life is to take delight in giving peace and
joy to others. This you can do in every circumstance and condition of
life. Life means service. The true joy of service is felt only when
you make it a spontaneous flow from the fountain of your immortal
existence. Hence, self- surrender has been held forth as the means
for the realization of your immortal nature and the consequent
blissful activity." - Swami Ramdas

I respectfully disagree.

You must live your life for yourself first.

You can mean that without disagreeing too Hopechest.

My last reply in this thread: 'what's your opinion on the purpose of life" was 'To be able to be of service to others'

Hopechest, to be of service to others is what sustains you.

I would disagree again.

To take care of ones own self is the best one can do. If everyone had that goal and tried to improve their own lives there would not be much need for people to help.

By providing service to others you enable their deficiencies.

What is egotistical about it?

Jesus said it himself....teaching a man to fish is better than giving him fish.

"Be alert always, recognizing the fact that human life is intended solely for realization of God. By surrendering yourself to the Divine within you and outside everywhere about you, open yourself to receive Grace which is ever flowing from God. What you have to do is, by making your heart open and receptive, allow it to enter into you and transform you into the being of God Himself. Believe that God is all in all. It is by His power alone all things happen and all movements take place. It is the ego that stands in the way of our attaining the higher Consciousness and Bliss. Get rid of the ego by laying it at the feet of the Almighty."

lol, so we need to learn to fish ourselves first, before we can teach it to others, so in that way we need to think about ourselves first. Yes, you are right.

but what you said doesn't mean giving a fish to a man is bad. Teaching him how to fish is just better, for the reasons one should see. And still giving and teaching is to be of service to others. Oh, righteousness, may thee prevail.

I think you interpreted it wrong. The quote is talking spiritually. Dont worry about deficiencies, just be there, love, be supportive, its through passing people that we are able to learn, so therefore if you live for yourself, you arent learning. Live for others, and you gain as much spiritual growth as you can get.

but you have to teach the man, through interaction is the growth, hence learning to fish and know the value of it in the process.
