Because "Life" here is relative.

I know a few people who have lots of money, travel a lot, are happily retired, love their job/business, love life, love to breath, love to exist, and they don't want to die .....they want to stay here longer.

I know much more people slaving away at jobs they hate, chronic health problems that cause them to suffer, broke, check to check, hate life, hate the body, hate this world, and see no point to any of it and can't wait to die and be over with all this.

They are both relative perspectives.

So the question is which one is right?

Personally, I'm only here to spread the word and pass out the blueprints to Enlightenment, and make a few people smile. Once all the appropriate amount of people find Enlightenment themselves within............. through me pointing the way, ....then I'm done with this place and I'm out of here. (I've found my purpose)

What if *everyone* was given a very basic choice, one that would solve percieved overpopulation as it is now, and as it would become if we all had a lifespan up to 15 X what it is now?

It's a simple choice...breed or live an extended life.

If you opt for lifespan extention, there's no kids for you, if you don't, you can have a family.

I wonder what most people would choose.

Why cant you understand some people dont want to live eternally? I dont, for two reasons;

The first one is practical ; im already having a hard enough time trying to enjoy myself inthis sh#thole, if youd live to a 1000, you do realize youd still have to eat etc? Study the first 100? Awesome! Im in! Oh wait, how will you pay for that?... I already know money is worthless like you suggested, doesnt mean others see it the same...

Second; death is part of life, im curious as to what will follow. Many believe theres nothing after, which I cant understand. Death is an intrinsical part of life, never mind the immortal jellyfish, mankind needs to be continually refreshed. You ask if I can imagine Einstein still being alive? Can you imagine Hitler still being (some do )? Nahh, I hope evolution will continue even mentally and if we'd all descide to stick around here for 1000years, I doubt the results will be positive.

I can be wrong though, if the corrupt would release mankind from the darkness theyre currently locked up in, who knows what we might become

All those years of working for the man making some other person rich, while you struggle throughout. When would you retire?

I never understood this attitude. Just because the human species happens to live for 100 years you think that's somehow the optimal amount of time to experience the universe? Just Earth itself could keep a creative person occupied for 1000 years, and in that time we will likely start colonizing other planets and solar systems. To me it just shows a myopic view to think that 1000 years is enough to bore you to death.

Also, something to consider on this topic. If this did become widespread it would of course cause overpopulation problems. I think the only short term solution to that, until we can escape this planet, would probably be to trade in your ability to breed and create more humans in exchange for an indefinite lifespan. If you want to have kids then then you have to give up your long life.

If we don't blow ourselves up in the next 100 years, this most definitely will happen. It's easy to mock the OP for what sounds like far out Sci-Fi, but this is going to be a very real discussion we'll be having in the next century. Science fiction is quickly becoming fact and people need to stop snickering and seriously discuss these things.

Seriously, I take breaks... a lot of people here have the worst attitudes about life... it's 90% doomsday and fear, I like the science, good debate about whatever... but realistically between the religious nuts (whose life after death theories are the same as the 72 virgin idiots NOT REAL) the paranoid psychos and the overall GLOOM of the news posted it would be hard to wake up and not think of the world as a"Mudball of Horror" lol

then there's the "soft" haters. arguing immortality because of limited resources or space or some such fallacy. lmao, stop it, yer killin me! free energy answers all that. i'm not talking about the mythical devices that never work in person, i mean nitinol, i mean indium gallium nitride, even stupid wind or hydro. many will leave earth. so, with immortality and free energy, earth will soon have no hunger, no limited resources, no money, unlimited free education, terahertz tricorders, no wars, no s****y jobs, and no oppressive govt or revenue generator police stations, we could afford to give each other unlimited love and care, and 3d printers give us unlimited everything else.

in the face of this upcoming change many are scared. all they see is the violenceporn on tv and other medias. their fear is quite understandable. but fear is the mind killer. this isn't the world we made. we're full of beauty and this is a truly ugly world. but the good news is it's not ours. we're about to make it ours. humanity is waking up now. altruism isn't dead, it's just being allowed to develop. scarcity inherently kills altruism.

btw, over the past couple years i've been seeing many articles on groundbreaking life-span experiments. just last year, they actually made some mice functionally immortal. this op didn't get into actually achieving immortality, but it has been done! the story even made it through the "official story" censors at popsci. can't recall atm tho.

whoah there. i've been immersing myself in conspiracies hardcore for over 15yrs. i'm the most knowledgable guy i know in the most extensive array of conspiracies. i'm also the most positive guy i know. literally too, about 4yrs ago i took a break once, no s***. i even sometimes listen to alex jones, even he can't affect me lol.

these kids are scared. illuminati is about to lose and they're throwing every tactic at us right now and these kids don't have the necessary tools to deal with all this mk/rand/tavistock/cointel programming that's being thrown at them. when u see someone trapped in the wheel, full of negativity, have limitless compassion. they can't help it.

I guess some people have hard lives and don't exactly enjoy it to the fullest or are "in a station" and do not envision going beyond that station.

Whereas, if one has massive visions and is a dreamer and wants to do a lot, then it would only be concluded that a life of 100 years is not enough. Think of a very high IQ person who wanted to take several degrees - learn lots from aeronautical engineering, to mathematics, to physics to biology, to biochemistry etc etc in order to work and invent and innovate in several fields? A lifetime of 100 years would not be enough - the time alone taking all of those degrees and PhDs and whatnot would take decades, let alone the time for innovation and discovery and innovation.

What's more - one of the main and major reasons that I want to live much, much longer is...THE FUTURE! What I refer to is future tech, advancements etc - and the big one - SPACE! I am really excited for mankind's future in space and space travel and with only 60-80 years left (maybe), I will only be able to see our first few venturings. But I'm greedy - I want to see more and more. I want to see how far we get in space - how far advanced we get. Indeed, I would venture to say that I want to be part of that advancement and maturation!

Most of what you list above are things which can much more easily be controlled than ageing itself, either through strong immune system functionality, healthy living, or modern and assumingly, future medicine.

While I'm not one to take everything in the Bible literally, especially literally with most people's interpretations, one of the easiest to believe parts of the old testament are those accounts of individuals living to be many hundreds of years old. In terms of what we know already about ageing, DNA, nanotechnology, etc., it would be shocking if the lifespan of someone born in, say 2050 was expected to be anything less than 500 years (discounting the possibility of withheld technology or access to such, of course.)

I expect we will continue to progress as we are in science, however, and life expectancies will rise significantly faster than that. The only real factor which should hold that back, is cllonizing other planets. A population of 140 billion, some of whom have been collecting social. Security checks for 300+ years, is not very appealing. But with an unlimited number of planets available to live on, once the travel tech is commonplace, and i'd be happy with a 3-5000 year run.

Thanks for this thread, Korg, because I've been also lightly following De Grey's work the last couple of years. I've even considered obtaining a degree in biology and computers and then hopefully and purposefully working near him for when the time comes that he finds the way to accomplish his goals. That way, if I work for him, there's the slightest chance he would use the cure on me and make me young again as I'll never be able to afford the procedure otherwise. Or maybe I could just let him experiment on me. I've actually considered donating my dead body to his work if that's possible.

As I, also, do not believe in any eternal spirit life nor reincarnation/soul/blah blah blah, I think it would be mighty interesting to exist on this planet for 1000 years. Mostly, I hate life now. I despise my job and the fact that I have to spend 40 hours a week to gain $500 to squeak by. I find most people disappointing if not downright awful and most people find me similarly I guess so I'm certainly not concerned about "watching my loved ones grow old and die". In fact, I would find it quite enticing to still appear and feel young around a growing amount of people that I've known through life. The older I get, the more I realize that living is for the wealthy and the beautiful, which could easily be obtained by living for a few hundred more years in a youthful state. I do, however, reap great joys from computer activities. I can see myself still enjoying Minecraft for another 1000 years.

And not only that, but the sheer wisdom one could obtain is staggering. You could learn to play every instrument and speak all the languages and still take 20 years off per hundred to party. The riches one could gain from interest and stocks alone is incredible. The anthropological insight would be bliss. The travels...oh the travels.

Don't be fooled. This key is a rich man's option only and the rest will wither away in their pitiful lives watching their damn fool great-grandchildren play as they try to remember their names. Our fates could be similar or worse UNLESS we can somehow get close to him. Work with him. Be his biyatch.

So how 'bout it? You could study Biology and I'll go computers. We meet with our doctorates in London in 10 years to begin phase 2. C'mon! Let's conspire on a conspiracy site and Semper Viva!
