Now this girl is probably going to be a felon for life, simply because she made the cap pop off a water bottle.

No she won't, she's a minor, this will be sealed and expunged, if not completely dismissed after the press on it.

Actually a fairly substantial bang, which could have injured anyone close to it. We have to remember that there's no footage of the particular explosion. For all we know it was a window rattler.

I think pressing criminal charges is OTT, but some kind of school disciplinary action WAS warranted if she did this on school grounds.

Your link is quite informative, however i believe your definition is very broad in this instance. In my HAZMAT classes during the fire academy this would have been classified as a rapid release of pressure, "explosions" are reserved for those instances involving flammable substances and under certain conditions. For example, a LPG (Liquid Petrolium Gas) cylinder that is heated from an outside source (lets say a fire). The pressure builds up inside the cylinder until the vessel ruptures resulting in a rapid release of pressure, the then released
LPG exits the vessel coming into contact with the heat source causing the vapor to then combust rapidly (explode). We would refer to this instance a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion).

So as far as the instance being an actual explosion I would have to say it is not because there is no combustion present. However this is an event that could have produced a IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health) sittuation, whether it be from shrapnel or poisnous gas depending on the chemicals used.

For those that will say a water bottle will not create shrapnel you are mistaken. When i was in the Seabees we made "MRE bombs" to pass the time on field exercises. I have personally been struck in the side of the head with a fast moving bottle cap. It may not have caused any debilitating injuries, but it did sting a little.

I guess some people have so little control over their own life that controlling others is the only chance they have left to flatter their ego.

Here in the Netherlands the parents or legal guardian are responsible for 18 year or younger children.
And a 16 year old can not be charged with something like this.

If this had severely injured herself or others maybe the OP would have a clearer understanding of why she was arrested.

Just because, luckily, no one gets hurt doesn't mean your excused from the rules and regulations of society.

Whoever said this was about fear is exactly right. These types of tactics used by the police and government agencies like the FBI are nothing more than TERROR TACTICS. The same breed of tactics they say they wish to protect us from. It is about instilling fear into the population, and they basically want to be able to control everyone to a certain extent. These groups have gotten way out of hand. In fact, most of the clandestine groups of the US got waaay out of hand soon after they were begun, yet by now Congress has no oversight over these organizations, and they cannot govern themselves with any morality or sense of the law, as they seem themselves as above the law, since they are tasked with enforcing it.

It is this mindset that causes police officers in the street to break the law and do what we all know many of them do, and nothing happens to them. If nothing happens to the police officers, nothing is ever going to happen to the agency personnel, as they have the power to make evidence disappear. They have even made people disappear.

This case is just sickening. I suppose the worst part is that there was no criminal intent evident. And how is this a federal crime? I understand it was on school property, but this is just out of line. It seems that those tasked with upholding the law suck at their jobs so much that they have to bring charges like this. It just shows how detached they are from reality. And it is scary to think that all around the US there are citizens with this same mindset. It makes it seem like there is no hope, as the stupidity seems insurmountable. I often wonder whether there are more sane people or insane people in the US. Looking at the membership of our political parties is a start to getting some solid data, as the stereotypes that are in place regarding these organizations are often highly accurate.

Please note that this is not my definition of explosion, it comes from other sources which appear to be well informed. Also note that under your definition, nuclear explosions and supernova blasts don't qualify as explosions, which frankly doesn't make sense.
