Alcoholics are trying to escape from reality, stop the pain..using it as a crutch, or just have an addictive personality in my opinion.

Most people i know who drink a lot of alcohol do so because their jobs are stressful or because their life isnt going as well as they think it should be. They use it to escape, they say it makes them feel better, but the truth is alcohol is a depressant...its slows the function of the central nervous system, which blocks messages to the brain.

I see no correlation between alcoholism and vitamin c deficiency.

I agree, all of that is true. I'm not saying it's a cure all, but a cure some. The theory is that "maybe", which is the basis of a 'theory'.

Don't bears crave fruit? I know they love blueberries and raspberry bushes. Also birds seem to love fruit, as they eat the choke cherries around here and get drunk.

I don't know about bears, but you are absolutely right about birds. Good catch of my brain-lapse, thanks.

I think the Doc is right on this one. It's about the GABA. The neurotransmiters in the brain.

GABA and Dopamine

Your body also needs vitamin C for synthesis of GABA, a nonessential amino acid that acts as neurotransmitter. As you gradually become addicted to alcohol, the alcohol changes the level of some of your brain chemicals, especially GABA, according to University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC. GABA is important because it stops you from being impulsive. Your brain levels of the feel-good neurotransmitter dopamine also are changed as your alcoholism progresses. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect dopamine from oxidation. As your brain levels of GABA and dopamine are altered, you crave alcohol to gain a good feeling again, notes UMMC.

There is also the theory that high doses of Vitamin C can cure alcoholism.

Vitamin C has a theoretical benefit for reducing alcohol cravings because this vitamin helps your body produce mood-boosting neurotransmitters. Overcoming cravings is key to overcoming alcohol addiction...

... High doses of vitamin C theoretically can help your body boost production of serotonin and epinephrine, both of which are mood-boosting neurotransmitters. Vitamin C is vital for the synthesis of serotonin and also plays a role in epinephrine synthesis in your body. Some alternative medicine practitioners, such as clinical nutrition professor Andrew Saul of New York Chiropractic College, recommend mega doses of vitamin C, such as 10,000 mg to 20,000 mg daily as one element of a supplement plan to overcome cravings.

Also: Liposomal Vitamin C doesn't give you loose stools because it bypasses the intestinal tract. If you had loose stools, your batch was not encapulated correctly.

Edit to Add: Also Liposomal Vitamin C is an excellent hangover cure... I've tested it myself quite successfully.

You should know that most of the ascorbic acid in the USA is derived from GMO corn.

Google "ascorbic acid GMO corn" and read all about it

You can slowly over a period of time condition your body to taken very large doses of Vitamin C "tablets'. It's called "titrating".

Here is how you do it:

Personally - I prefer the liposomal method, much easier, plus I hate swallowing pills. So a couple of shots of liposomal everyday is good and easy for me.

I think that GABA recepter uptake and euphoria have more to do with the desire for alcohol than some Vitamin C deprivation conspiracy. Mankind has been wanting to alter our consciousness ever since we discovered we had a consciousnesss and alcoholism existed long before corporations.

I don't understand where the vitamin C alcohol connection comes in. Is it because quite often alcohol is made from fruit? Why do you think the taste buds sense ascorbic acid? Where do you get the premise that corporations are tricking people to drink instead of taking vitamin c? I don't recall seeing a single bit of advertising for an alcoholic product that had anything to do with vitamin C or any nutritional value...just that you'll have fun and feel good.

Hello Navy Doc, love your posts especially on the Boston threads. Sure, people's subconscious or whatever it is that's sailing through life on habits and instinct think that red wine and wine coolers and fruity looking drinks are fruit. And that fruit=something I need. The advertising isn't for C, but the colour alone makes people attracted to it. The fun and feel good until you don't aspect comes into play when the brain cells die (RIP), but maybe the initial interest in actually pouring the drink is because of a lack of ascorbic acid. I'm not saying that it's the whole thing, when people get hooked they usually stay hooked. My point is, as in my post above, what if a medical test were done so that some winos (or wine "connoisseurs" depending on the bank account) were given enough C to heal their genetic illness, and others weren't, and then compare the consumption pattern after three months. The Navy or a VA out-clinic would be good place to put such a test into place (hint hint).

There is some thought that Vitamin C could be associated with treating addiction by maintaining dopamine and GABA, as so well posted above.

As already posted, the anti oxidant properties can help with hangover pain. The Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatology had an excellent study on Vit C, Vit E, aand L-carnitine in reduction of arthritic pain, ostensibly from anti-oxidant properties.

If it bypasses the intestinal tract after oral consumption, what is the mechanism and route of abscorption? Direct bloodstream pickup by the rectal venous plexus?

There is plenty on non-GMO product available on the market... just be careful what you buy.

The delivery method is the absorption through the stomach lining. Liposomal is made with lecithin which is the same cellular composition of the lining of the stomach walls. Therefore, when properly prepared, it is immediately absorbed into the stomach, then directly to the liver and then the plasma where it is distributed to the rest of the organs in the body.

I won't go into detail here as there is much discussion in the other thread in my signature links.

Exactly. When you take a drink of alcohol, dopameine is released immediately, making you feel happy.

However, I wouldn't be opposed to testing this. Substitute beer for oj. OJ is some good stuff too. I wonder if it releases dopameine as well...

Thanks Julie, for all the good data. I linked your threads earlier, and wholeheartedly recommend that people read them, bask in them, and come out the other side much more informed about their body and what can be both fixed and be accomplished when it has an everyday Vitamin C tune-up.

I'm a sugar addict myself, which is why I can't eat one cookie, or piece of cake or candy, or I'll eat 20 pieces and want more. Have been off all of that (again!) since last September, and don't miss any of it. I've done that before for years at a time in my quest to be always-vegan.

So some good information on my opening title and question. I'd still like to see the results of a large-scale double blind test of alcoholoics (especially the wine cravers) to see if there would be a major change in some of them when they had proper "large" doses of C daily for a few months. It's the kind of study I doubt any pharma corporation would want to do, because they can't patent and thus have a monopoly on C and it would make too many poeople healthy. If ATS had a foundation funding tests that's one I'd suggest (not a bad idea actually, an ATS Foundation for things that the standard foundations wouldn't fund).

I am doing a batch of vegan cookies just now. I never measure anything cos you can't really screw these up.

Some figs, some pitted dates, banana, almond milk, cashew butter and vanilla essence blended. Stir in some maca powder, oats, nuts and carob powder till it looks really chocolatey. Just get as close to a Cookie dough texture as you can.

Taste it....chuck some blobs on a baking tray. Bake in oven at medium heat for 20-25 mins...

Challenge you to let them cool before they are finished.

Good for when you get a sweet craving...but high in calories...and full of good stuff. No wheat, no dairy and low gluten, apart from oats.

Feel like a new woman on dairy free and wheat free diet, with liposomal vit c in the mix too!

I'm looking to feel more like a new man. Perhaps some viagra into the mix might help, eh?

Tequila works for awhile but I lose my train of thought and lapse into reciting poetry in Spanish by Antonio Lochada.
