Apparently they are prehistoric... and according to some, a pest.

I have a pic of what I think is a mushroom that was in my yard last year, It's a digusting looking thing. Pointed, red, slimey and a hole in the top of it.

Pic is on another computer though. Will post later.

It's field horsetail. Not an edible. minnesotaseasons.com... We have them all over the place in the upper Lake Superior water basin. They can be invasive as all get out. Kind of pretty though. I wish they were immature morels, I found a spot of literally acres of those growing.
