In the hands of a trained anti-terrorist agency/law enforcement officer I'd agree with you that its an effective tool.

In the hands of a wannabee CSI viewer with no idea what the hell they're talking about, who doesn't know the difference between Hindu and Muslim, believes all muslims are terrorists and only sees the colour of someones skin, its a invitation to abject stupidity.

That, in itself is very disturbing, and it appears to be a growing trend. That's not the worst of it. I remember a few days after 9/11 happened there were reports of Indians being assaulted in various parts of the USA (India Indians, not Native Americans) because people just assumed they were Arab/Muslim judging by their appearance

That's so stupid I don't even know where to begin. It's like if an Irishman committed some kind of atrocity, and some guy went out and punched a German just because he had a similar skin tone.

This occurrence is not exclusive to the internet. Back when print was big i bet there were people saying "the darkest days of print blah blah blah" ...that was all the rage.

Yes, but in the days of print somebody could be held accountable and brought to heel for erroneous articles appearing, editorial discretion could choose to print or not print commentary from the readership. Those days are over, for now at least.
