Potassium Iodide is not the only medication that will help you during a nuclear accident. Also non-radioactive supplements only help in accidents
where the zircaloy cladding is breached and fission products are released. In less serious accidents like the one that happend out side of Chicago a
couple days ago where the containment is vented but only release irradiated steam containing tritium, there is nothing one can do besides get out of
the effected area. Back to supplements. Potassium Iodide (KI) is a good one because Cs is a K analog in the body so KI also blocks the uptake of Cs to
the body. But you need a higher quantity of K then you do Iodine so taking other K or Li. Supplements is recommended. Also KI can make some people
sick. Larger doeses of it will certainly make anyone sick. Antiseptic Iodine solutions wich contain elemental Iodine dissolved in ethenol is a good
substitute but should be rub on the skin over lymphnodes and not consumed. But all of this depends on people being informed of the radioactive plume
heading for then because because these methods of protection have to be implemented befor contamunation occurs. But as seen in Fukushima, Chrenobyl,
TMI, and every other nuclear accident that has occurred the gov. Will most likly not inform the public of core damage to prevent panic and by the time
they do (3 months later in the case of Fukushima) it will most likly be to late. But this is still important information that every one should be
swear of. Also these methods only work against internal contamination and not external Gama radiation. If you are effected by one of these horrible
situations the best this you can do is leave the effected area and stay away for at least 300 years.
