Court sentences top pianist

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) -- An Istanbul court slapped a world-renowned musician Monday with a 10-month suspended sentence for posting a series of tweets that poked fun at Islamic descriptions of heaven. Classical concert pianist Fazil Say, 43, was found guilty of "openly insulting the religious values held by a portion of the public" for the tweets, which were posted last year.

"Freedom of expression does not entitle you to condescend or offend or insult people," countered plaintiff Ali Emre Bukagili. "That's a crime."

Say's tweets included: "You say the rivers will flow with wine, is heaven a tavern? You say each believer will receive two women, is heaven a brothel?" according to the indictment.

Say also was convicted of retweeting allegedly offensive posts, such as, "I am not sure if you have realized it, but where there is scum, a lowlife, a thief or a fool, s/he is always an Allahist. Is this a paradox?"

So, a man is found guilty of brilliantly commenting on a place that doesn't exist (heaven), and insulting followers of Islam that are no better than the common criminal. He didn't even point out how the followers of islam love to rape women and honor kill their own kids. Wow. I know religion is stupid and evil, but this is a new low even for stupid and evil.

Will someone please tell me how mankind can still be so brainwashed and ignorant in the 21st century?

How can a person be convicted of having and expressing his own thoughts on society? How do we ever have an honest dialog? Disgusting.

This outrage is even worse for atheists. To me, being arrested for debunking religious beliefs is like someone being sentenced for kicking a unicorn in the crotch. When I say it's just insane, I don't mean it as a sad statement of our times, I mean it's literally insane.

Partly I agree with you.
But: when you wonder how mankind can be so brainwashed: you are also brainwashed. Rapist are found everywhere in every religion.
I don't think you can say follower of Islam are rapist. 99 % of them are not.

Moreover, you say heaven doesn't exist. You know that for sure? I've been searching for it, didn't find it but that doesn't say there is no heaven. Maybe I was looking in the wrong places.

I'm not a Muslim. But I try to be openminded and to not be ignorant.

while i agree that this guy should have had the freedom to say what he did without censure and prosecution by his government, your above statement implies that you are subject to brainwashing yourself and are spreading propaganda, unwittingly or otherwise.

you may see me as picking nits, but you are suggesting that rape and honour killings are a common feature of islamic folk and that generally they love to do these things. ofc this is BS - you may as well say christians love to fiddle with kiddies and bomb poor countries.

considering that this pianist really knew the nature of the legal system/society that he lived in and did this anyway, was allowed to continue touring and not even made to appear in court proceedings due to his schedule and then only got a suspended sentence... it all looks a storm in a tea cup really - especially considering that in pre islamic govt turkey you would still have been thrown in jail for insulting Kemal Attaturk (secular founder of the nation), defacing a stamp or burning Lira.

outrage over this seems somewhat contrived given this information

1. Like the news article said...

"Freedom of expression does not entitle you to condescend or offend or insult people,"

That heaven does not exist is an opinion. Would you go to a funeral and tell those mourning "hey, heaven does not exist, your loved one just ceased to exist".... and then justify it with freedom of expression?

2. Similarly, there are people who believe that the holocaust figures are greatly exaggerated. Yet when they use their freedom of expression and express themselves, they get into trouble.... even arrested. In fact, expressing doubt on the holocaust is illegal in some European countries.

If freedom of expression is universal, why make exceptions for a few select cases?

Religion is basically the world's first and premier 12 step program, just pick one.

It is for people who want to blame someone else for their actions.

Small wonder it draws deviants, and the small minded.

Well, the fact that he is a Turk, and most likely Muslim, I'd say your analysis needs to factor in that there just might be Muslims who are able to think clearly through a conservative religious rhetoric of intolerance. This is completely in step with Christians in the US. There is a portion of that religious group that would condone and defend such actions if there were a more overt connection between religion and the State. I mean, our laws do allow for freedoms, but there are still boundaries you don't cross regarding religion in certain areas of the country.

Now, imagine a conservative Christian government did rule the whole country. I guarantee the same types of rhetoric and legal action against free speech would be the norm from our government.

Also, I'll point out that he tweets the term "Allahists," which to me, by context seems to be similar to a term like Christian hypocrite (those who profiteer of Christianity, but tend to be discovered high on meth in Las Vegas hotel rooms or traveling Europe with young gay "escorts"). If society is run by them you can bet they will use the law and the bible to hide behind, just as most Muslim nations do.

How can one "insult Islam"? Islam is a belief system, not a person with feelings that can be insulted.

Reification fallacy.

I'm not calling ALL of them rapists. I just got out of work, so I'm too tired to go searching for the news articles where I read that every country where there is an increase in muslim migration, rape is up, crime is up, murder is up.

But that isn't even close to the scary part. Wherever the followers of Islam move to, their numbers are increasing. Within the next fifty years they will be a majority in some countries, and then they will vote themselves into office and totally destroy freedom. It's going to happen if citizens of the civilized world don't stand up and say NO! The followers of Islam cannot come into our country!

We have to stop recognizing Islam as a religion and look at it as an organization of ignorant people with the ability to kill, abuse, and dominate. It's just like the KKK in my opinion. No, I take that back, no KKK member ever locked anyone up for drawing a freakin cartoon.

I love you guys, but I have to say that some of you really need to WAKE UP! There has been a 74% increase in Mosques in the United States over the last ten years. This brings the total to 2016. Mosques in America

If you say that's not a lot, just think of what Islam is doing in other parts of the world. In Britain, there are about 1500 mosques. In certain areas the government has allowed Sharia law to take precedence over British law. So, the take over is already starting there. It WILL happen here in the U.S. within the next fifty years. It WILL!

Please PLEASE start watching Pat Condell's youtube clips. I agree with everything the man says. He has 106 clips of about 7 minutes each and they hit the truth hard.

You don't need to click on these links. I just want you to look at the headlines:

majorityrights.com/weblog/comments/muslim_rape_wave_in_sweden/

themuslimissue.wordpress.com/2012/08/06/norway-90-of-all-violent-rapes-in-oslo-committed-by-muslims/

fjordman.blogspot.com/2005/02/muslim-rape-epidemic-in-sweden-and.html (this includes Norway)

tundratabloids.com/2013/01/muslims-try-to-affect-rape-statistics-in-india-deny-women-a-cell-phone.html

Do I really need to add links about honor killings and people being sent to prison for speaking out against Islam?

Some try to say it's not a Muslim thing, it's a cultural thing. Yet, there are Christian and Jewish families living in some of these backward nations and they aren't raping or killing anyone. It's NOT cultural, it's religious!

LOL I love how some of you say I'm brainwashed.

If I were to say that there's no such thing as an Easter Bunny, you would agree (hopefully!).
If I were to say there's no such thing as a Unicorn, you would say, "that's right."
But, if I say there's no god and no heaven, I'm brainwashed! lololol I'm sorry, I cannot take this seriously.

sorry but your comment about sharia being allowed to take precedence over british law is simply untrue and you should not spread disinfo so carelessly. some muslims go to immam re sharia as a form of mediation in disputes, no different from me going to a mediator to sort out divorce issues. it's a contract that the willing enter into to resolve a dispute. dont spread lies

It's not a lie and you just confirmed it. BRITISH people, as in the people living in Britain, go to a British arbitrator with the decisions governed and handed down by BRITISH law. Who cares who consents to what??? If you don't understand tacit agreement then don't go spreading lies about someone spreading lies.

Tacit Agreement in this case means when you enter a country, even though you can't possibly know all of it's laws you still agree to abide by them. If you're in Britain and need an arbitrator you go to a BRITISH arbitrator. You DON'T create little ghettos that conform to the laws of the land you left behind. You don't force everyone in your new country to conform to your way of life - YOU conform to that country's way of life. This isn't happening with Muslims.

Why is 21th century human still after religions !?

1- maybe it feels that he needs it.
2- maybe 21th is not that big as you think. human is still far weak to prevent it's own death !
3- maybe they can recognize ignorance and real religions.

You can try to pick apart his argument as much as you wish, but it doesn't hide the fact that this is blatant religious oppression. You don't actually condone what's happened here, do you?

It's funny, now that I think about it. I live in country that technically has a state religion, yet there are kids banned from wearing many sorts of religious garments/jewellery to school due to uniform policies. I think it's a little silly, but I'm grateful for living in a country where we can openly rant about it.

rubbish. it's just someone providing a mediation service with a cultural touchstone using a traditional islamic vehicle, it in no way takes precedence over british law as you clearly stated and it is not legally binding - it is a method of attempting to reach agreement that two parties can choose to enter into. it is in no way used by all muslims either, and those involved would actually be british citizens and governed by british law.

dont believe the scare stories, it's a load of guff designed to make people scared of each other, the old divide and conquer. i've lived in so called heavily islamic areas and the truth is much more mundane than the fiction that permeates the internet. the sharia scare is bull

ETA: vicars, priests and rabbis mediate disputes too, though i dont see outrage over that funnily enough
