Our "Medical Professionals" greatly disturb me.

Today was the first day that I realized how sick and twisted our "Medical Professionals" are. I work in a grocery store, so everyday, I see people that come through my line who talk about various topics and the latest in the news and what not. Small talk to make it not so awkward when you're checking out with a cart full of groceries.

Today, a lady came through my line and told me how her doctor told her that she has to start this medication to cure her migraines. She told me how they've been getting worse and are accompanied by nausea, blurred vision, dizziness and some other symptoms. I asked her if her doctor had taken an MRI or CT scan to see if there is any possibility of a brain tumor, and she said no.

Her doctor wrote her a prescription for 6 pills and wanted her to take them and see if her migraines go away. These pills cost $165.00 dollars for 6 of them. That's just ridiculous.

She refused to pay for them and was going back to her doctor to see if he could prescribe her something less expensive. I told her to forget about the pills and just get an MRI done because you never know. I think that it's disturbing that her doctor didn't even consider doing an MRI, and just went straight to the pills.

I don't know if I'm just thinking too much into it, but the way our doctors hand out pills, it's like they think it's really overpriced candy.

Thoughts?

Well I believe the MRI or catscan costs far more than 165 dollars. Perhaps the doctor has an idea what this may be and is taking her the less expesive route before taking the more costly measures.

MRI's and CT scans cost way more than $165.00, but I think that it's just twisted how expensive anything that may potentially cure your aliment is! It's a corrupt system! That includes pills, MRI's...anything that can help you. It's not about helping people. It's about how much money you can rake in off of people's medical issues.

It's a disturbing world we live in.

My thought on this case is that she may be a "private pay" patient since she couldn't afford the pills. How could she afford the MR? Not knowing the case are we certain the Doc hasn't already tried other meds with no effect?
It is a shame we can't get good care without considering the financial aspect.

This could be true. I didn't consider that option, but it still is sad that it's all about money and greed and not about care.

Of course I am talking about the same "Medical Professionals" that give out fluoride pills to parents to give to their children. What a sick place.

We can't even make sure that we're healthy without paying an arm and a leg for an MRI.

You're not telling the entire story.

What was the name of the medication? That's expensive stuff, so what was it? What was the name of this doctor, so I don't get him/her.

Headaches and blurry vision isn't enough to see if a pill is right or wrong. First you're not a doctor. Second you don't know this woman's medical history. Third you over heard it in a grocery store when she might be exaggerating her trouble, telling what she wants you to hear, for her own reasons.

Maybe you watch medical drama TV where the logical way is to order a dozen tests and then narrow it all down to ...it could be a tumor? Really? It could be high blood pressure. It could be stress. It could be side effects from bad drugs she is already taking. It could be she needs prescription glasses. It could be too much caffeine or the side effects of coming off caffeine.

I don't get it how you're so upset.

I forgot to mention that she might have these horrible migraines because she's addicted to pain killers.

Maybe if patients stopped coming to doctors like beggars they wouldn't get such treatment.

If they are migraines, simple dietary changes can get rid of them sometimes. I have been studying the things that cause headaches, it's not a problem. The changes can be so small that a person wouldn't hardly notice. I wouldn't ask for an MRI or Catscan unless there was something more that was wrong to show a need for them. They are expensive tests and they can have some bad effects if done to often.

wow umm u forget the doctors WORK for the patient ????? the patient deserves better care and at an affordable rate. jaking prices up becuae u is tied in with the insurance co. does not help the patient. did they take a oath???? not all of us ppl in this country r bums. plz think b4 u speak.

Tell her to move to the UK those pills would have cost about 8 quid per course

It sounds like she may be possibly suffering from hypertension...She should have her blood pressure checked.

So many doctors are idiots and many of them are very unhealthy,.
taking advice from most doctors is a real gamble with your life. This doctor
in your post should have at least recommended she see a Registered Dietitian
For all we know this woman could have Celiac Disease, this is known to cause
a whole bunch of health issue including migraines.

But why on earth wold this doctor really want to cure her in the first place.. he'd loose money

I went to the doctor because of a shoulder problem.
He gave me a prescription for some pills and told me to make an appointment with the nurse for a course of injections direct into my shoulder. I never bothered with either as although it was painful it wasn't bad enough for me to risk unknown side affects of whatever the pills might contain.
About two weeks after I saw the doctor my shoulder stopped hurting, its completely back to normal now.

They like to hand out pills, it makes MONEY!

Exactly, it's the same with the dentists and the fluoride. Why would they want you to take something that would stop your teeth rotting? they'd very soon be out of a job.

MD is not an easy profession - which is an understatement btw. Granted ,there are bad or crooked doctors and there are overpriced medications with good marketing behind it but in this case there is 0 information to make any judgement since we not only are not qualified ,we do not know anything about this case.
I assume the medication is one of newer generations of triptans and those are pretty expensive but they work well and (probably) have less side effects then older ones ,not to mention surely less side effects then other families of anti-migraine medications. Whether it is worth the high price or it is a migraine at all - not our place to judge.

I went to a GP last year with some neck and ear pains and what not. Did all the research on the internet for what the possibilities might be, and brought a small 1 page printed out of what I think the problem is.

The Doc comes in for 30 seconds, won't even read my note, writes down some things while out right ignoring me, and was out the room. Basically sent me to a Ear, Nose, Throat specialist, and that's it.

Seriously!!! I can be a GP right now. Anyone patients I see, I either give a prescription of anti-biotics, or send to a specialist. And these idiots reap 180-250k a year!!!!! Seriously a bunch of book read morons.

To make a long story shor, I figured out what the problem was though google, and what meds I needed to get better. The E.N.T Doctor was even a bigger douche, and pulled the same thing as the first. He spent no longer than maybe 20 seconds in the room.

And I'm not the only one who is complaining and having these experiences. Medical Pro's in the U.S> just outright SUCK!!!!!!.

If your a doctor and you're reading this, SPEND SOME DAM TIME WITH YOUR PATIENTS and SHOW SOME LOVE AND CONCERN!!!!!!

Saying "medical professionals" is rather misleading. It seems that you're really just trying to single out MDs, though your vague description could just as easily include nurse techs/assistants, nurse, physician's assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, etc, etc, etc... The world of "medical professionals" is extremely diverse and branching out into more and more specialties at a very rapid pace.

Also, as other people have said, you probably didn't get the full story. Most people, insured and uninsured likewise, don't want to go through the rigmarole (i.e. time and money) of further tests. They just want an immediate solution. For this customer of yours, the medication may have been that immediate solution.

Unfortunately, medicine has become more of a business. To keep patients many times doctors will prescribe medications at the patient's request. This is because they know if they don't prescribe the medications, the patient will find another doctor who will without looking back or a second thought. This goes for antibiotics, pain and anxiety medications, and everything in-between.

While medical professionals are, in many cases, working hand-in-hand with the insurance companies, it doesn't mean that all are out to get you.

One of the reasons for the high insurance rates and costs associated with tests, pills, etc... is all of the lawsuits that come from malpractice, whether it happened or is only perceived to have happened. Many times insurance companies will settle just to get the process over quickly and avoid going to court (which costs them more money in the long run, even if they win the case). Either way, the companies paying out these settlements is a part of what keeps premiums up. Doing a quick Google search about the costs of lawsuits on health care will help you understand what I'm trying to say.

Sounds like Imitrex, my wife and brother were both on them for migraines. My wife got several MRI's and they said she had lesions on her brain. I did some research and found that MSG can cause lesions on the brain as well as migraines. One of the side effects of Imitrex just happens to be heart attacks in otherwise healthy people.

Showed my research to both wife and brother and they both stopped taking Imitrex, they no longer consume foods with MSG, aspartame and the other fake sugars and try to eat little to no processed foods. They also use the forbidden herb to successfully treat migraines, which are far and few between since the change in diet.

MEdical sucks everywhere really, just in different ways. In NY it sucked, I just couldn't afford it, so I never saw a doctor much, unless I thought I was gonna croak or cut off an arm or something serious.

Now I live in NB canada, get to see a doctor regularly for free, but medication is still costly, and everything takes FOREVER! I have to make an appointment to see my doctor like 2 weeks in advance, or drive 2 hours away to go to the hospital. I waited months to get an MRI. Still waiting to see a urologist that was "ordered" 7 months ago. GP are jokes really up here, mom has been complaining for years about something wrong with her stomach, she hasn't gone a day without heartburn since the hospital botched her appendix removal.....

MRIs and CT scans are not more than $165. You just get billed like it is. Huge difference.

How much does it really cost $89 to $269.
