I actually called in to see my 6 year old daughter at her swimming class this afternoon... if the staff had told me the same as what they told this Canadian father, I would've either just ignored it out of hand, or told them to tell the Muslim women to leave if they didn't like my presence there. Period. What are they going to do??

This nonsense and the indulging of it by non-muslims, needs to stop... immediately. If they don't like our culture and way of life, don't bloody migrate here!

Yep. In a PUBLIC pool. And you thought Islam was something that wouldn't affect your life in public because your not religious?

Mind you, this event will seem trivial compared to what it will be like by 2020. And you all let it happen in the name of equality, and then couldn't stop it out of fear of offense and then can't reverse it out of fear itself.

That's how Islam works globally at the highest level of intention. Just look at Nigeria and Kenya. Classic example and Britain is being included and Canada will follow.

Yes there are mixed classes...but the question that arises from this...why are parents allowed to sit in at mixed classes, but not at girls only classes ? I don't get the point...we are talking about kids and parents here...aren't we ? Are all fathers dirty perverts and can't be trusted to look at semi naked children in a pool ?

So, if I understand this article correctly...if you have a girl...than mother has to accompany her to the pool...and if it's a boy...than a father has to ?

It's a women only class. I remember women only classes being around since I was a kid.
That means no men allowed.

The pool offers a mixed class. Just go to that one.

It's not a muslim only class.

is it women only...or little girls only? If it is little girls...than I don't see how you can prevent any parent to watch their young one splash in a pool. Frankly, if someone had forbidden me to watch my child being trained to swim...I would protest. Public pools are just that...public.

It's a hard call, I can imagine there are times when women don't wish to be stared at...But that opens another discussion...Do men that attend female sports events only attend to...oogle...Or...do they attend for support of family and for the love of the sport itself? Perhaps we should consider women only sporting events and spectated events....Perhaps, women only sports channels, female only assualt squadrons on the battlefield...

OR...maybe co-ed is the way to go...

I lived in Toronto for years and left when I started seeing things like this 1.banned the lords prayer in public schools then made Muslim prayer rooms in the same public schools.2.i must show my face in court and on my drivers licence but Muslim woman can hide there faces completely.3.complained to the city council about the term merry Christmas and the name Christmas tree so the name was changed.3.Watched a group leave a mosque on Danforth road and deliberately stopped a funeral procession by not just simply crossing the road but stopping and standing in the middle of it.4.They are allowed in schools to sit down at the playing of the national anthem. My taxes used to only fund the Public School Board and the Separate school board and my child could go to either one. Now we have a Muslim,Jewish,Hindu,etc all funded but not open to everyone except to pay for it.We have over 140 language translators in the courts here.Plus not to forget Black Only schools but if u did White Only schools oh man the backlash. The last census in Toronto put 7 out of 10 in the populace as visible minority's .My question is if they make up the majority how can they be the minority? Last thing is my cultural is Scottish, Irish and Chippewa and my family goes back (as far as I can trace 1712 for the most part). I think the whole problem and what I see and hear is that Canada is virgin territory ready to be taken over. It seems to explain in the article that the swim program is a specifically FEMALE ONLY program and that the majority of swim programs are integrated and there are many others the father could choose if he wants to watch his daughter. This one is specifically female not only just to accommodate the Muslim girls (though the rules to fit to what they want), but to accommodate any girl or mother who wants to swim in a female only setting or wants their daughter too.

I don't believe this is a terrible thing, I live in the area where this swimming place is and it seems innocent enough.

When my girls go swimming at a public pool for lessons i am there to watch them, i would not accept this religious nonsense, if however the pool has a separate swim lesson time to protect the virtue of you muslims from the defiling eyes of men that would be fine, and I would not enroll my daughters in that class.

Thanks for your comments and compliments. First of all, nowhere does it indicate in the link that the father wanted to swim with females. The father only wanted to watch her daughter practice which is perfectly fine with me (and perhaps every parents). Perhaps they should have clarified upfront that you can't even watch your daughter practice so that the dad would have enrolled her in a boys/girls swimming class.

That's the point. I don't mind "women only" thing. But it's not women...it's young girls, and a parent has a right to oversee their training.

If it was women only...and there were women there only...than there would be no case here. What about my child being exposed to strange semi naked grown women, with different cultural values than our own. Do I let that slide without me watching over my kid...

Your point number 1 is a big racist assumption against the west. West has its own culture which most of the world embraces as it breaks the norms and taboos of the old. It is this change that most of the east fears and hates (religious fanatics and radical groups).

Well the west can say the same about the east that it should alter/change/redefine its values and stop living in the past. Open society does not mean leaning towards a specific race/religion. It means coming to agreement/compromise as a society with laws derived by the legal/judicial/constitutional system(s). This works both ways and not one way. If you hold on to your strict morals and values and impose them onto others outside the native homeland, then it becomes a problem.

I see many of the comments deviating but lets not also forget that this particular incident is about a small girl (not an adult woman) and a father. There's a big difference. More than likely the father was misinformed or not informed about the rules and regulations which is the problem. I'm sure if he was informed well about the class being a 'all female' and that 'watching their child practice' is not allowed then he might have enrolled her into a 'boys/females' swimming class. But to someone deriving the rules and regulations by the poolside on the fly is not acceptable. Is there anyplace/anywhere does it indicate that the watching is not allowed due to religious reasons as required by the law? If Yes then it should be posted on the entrance door to the pools. If not, they're in clear violation.

Very simple isn't it? IMO, the person by the pool side came up with their own explanation about religious values and other nonsense instead of reminding the rules and regulations of the 'females only' pool.

Sounds like an isolated incident. The staff on duty at the time made a pretty bad judgement call to restrict the class. Nothing that a few complaint letters won't take care of. It has hit the international news now and I'm sure whoever made that call has or will be reprimanded. I'd like to see where this goes

Our daughter is on more than one swim team. If someone tried to lock us out of swim team practice because of their religion, we'd tell them to do the world a favor and go jump off a bridge. This is 2013 ... welcome to it.

So what exactly is the issue here? That there exists a swimming class that accommodates Muslim sensibilities? You are angry because of that?? lol. Here's some advice for this parent: find a class where men are allowed to watch! I'm sure they exist. He probably sent his kid to the one all girls class that disallowed male parents.
Btw, I'm Canadian myself, and it is amusing the only people I've heard make a commotion about this are Americans.
