What if GOP chose McCain in 2000?

While Bush has since solidly become the face of the GOP, I remember back in 2000 there was a close race between Bush and McCain in the primaries. McCain remains a very popular figure and one of the only politicians left in DC that seems to be unspoiled by special interests. I always felt the GOP would easily have won in 2000 with him, but I feel Bush was chosen due to his receptiveness of special interests and far right influences. Obviously McCain is quite a moderate Republican and a much less polarizing figure. Where would we be today with him as president?
