There will be rather a lot of Miners, Teachers, Steelworkers, Ex Trade Unionists and fellow Scots that will be celebrating tonight, myself included!

Destroyed a nation more like it, good riddance to the old bat.

I, and I imagine many of my fellow Northerners have been waiting for this day.

I never wished death upon her, I would never wish it upon anyone, but I looked forward to this day.

Sorry if my response seems cold, maybe a lot of you might not understand, I'm sure there will be some here that do though.

Ok...I appreciate getting the news here on ATS and I am glad you created this thread...however, it is very spartan.

I would like to know...what do you think of Margaret Thatcher as a person; etc.

Poll tax
Privatisation of industry (also ending government subsidies)
Reduced taxes for the rich
Threatened to use nukes during the Falklands conflict (a conflict which could have been avoided had she paid attention)
Destroyed unions
Unemployment doubled
Closed mines
Destroyed local democracy and centralised everything from Whitehall
Heavy taxation (ex. VAT increased from 8% to 17.5%)

Sorry I didn't put much, I'm at work and so I was rushing, I will fill it in soon when I can have a break. Plus when I first posted it, there wasn't much info about, it was literally just making the news.

She was a clear demonstration of the British political cycle where socialists come into power and p ss the national wealth away. Conservatives then are voted into office to take all the painful steps that need to be taken to repair the damage done by the Labour Party which which leads to Conservatives becoming unpopular, and then being voted out of office.
Labour then once again inherit a good economic situation which they happily take all the credit for although it was none of their doing. Then as we saw with Blair/Brown Labour proceed to squander the national wealth away which they unsurprisingly claim is none of their doing, they are then get booted out by the electorate, and subsequently as we are now seeing with the coalition painful damage repairing measures once again have to be taken and the cycle repeats. I doubt it will ever change.

RIP Maggie.

She was prime minister for 11 years, in fact the longest serving one at that...things just went from bad to worse.

I'm not saying Labour are any better, but you certainly can't say she wasn't responsible for the mess she created.

While I understand the feelings politicians can evoke in people, it's rather saddening to see so many rejoicing in the passing of an old lady.

If it was a case of her in power now and her continuing to be the cause of what so many consider such a disaster, I could understand.

But how long has it been since she has meant nothing politically?

Yet here some are, high fiving and singing.

Why did she destroy a nation? That is complete claptrap in my opinion but each to their own mate.

Lets just take a look at some of the things you listed.......

Poll Tax - seen as aggressive at the time but actually turned out to be a watered down version of Council Tax. New Labour the bad guys..........

Destroyed Unions - Guilty but frankly made perfect sense at the time. Dos anyone remember the 3 day week? Major blackouts etc, because of overly militant completely unrealistic Union demands?

Closed Mines - Complete rubbish. NUM demands, combined with rising extraction costs (viable again now though) made coal mining a complete waste of time. Losing hundreds of millions each year just to keep the pits open. The ironic thing is that Maggie gets all the hate and yet Scargill and the NUM are seen as heroes, which is such a distortion of the truth that even Hollywood would say it is too much of a jump!

Normally I would agree, in fact the comments I made would normally disgust me.

But having lived through those times, seen the financial hardship suffered by friends and family, watched as the Great was sucked out of Britain...I think I can live with myself for such comments.

I have only seen my father at a low point once in his life, and that woman was responsible for it, and there are many families out there who will likely have a similar tale.

As pointed out in my response she was voted into a country that was brought to failure by Wilson/Callaghan socialism, the steps taken by her government were painful, and unpopular but lead to a much stronger British economy until New Labour came to power and through excessive borrowing and spending once again brought the nation to the brink of ruin.
