It has been an ongoing debate between the press and the Harper government that it is muzzling scientists and keeping a very tight control over them, in some cases preventing them from publishing and more commonly keeping them from speaking freely about their research and findings. Such articles appeared in Nature and the Scientist In all cases the public is fed spin and denial by such frustratingly annoying people as Kelly Leach who more than once almost made me pitch my shoe at the television. If we want to know about research going on, then a government media person is assigned to speak about it, and we the uneducated public are expected to fall into line, swallow and digest an interpretation that has spin all over it. (Some will call it Agenda 21, or NWO and who am I to disagree with them? For sure, the Harper government's promise of openness and transparency is nothing but a blatant fairy tale.

For example, read the following from what Green party leader Elizabeth May titled "Mystery of the muzzled scientists".

The mystery is now the muzzling of scientists whose work has already been published in peer reviewed journals. In July, DFO scientist, Dr Kristi Miller, whose work on viruses linked to fish farms affecting salmon had been published in the internationally prestigious journal Science, was barred from speaking to reporters. Science had sent a note promoting interviews with Dr Miller to 7,400 reporters worldwide, without imagining her own government would issue a gag order. Later at the Cohen Commission, she testified that she did not know when the ban, imposed by the Privy Council Office, would be lifted.

A recently retired scientist has broken the silence about the politicization of science in Canada. With the explanation that her findings could upset the city of Regina (hello? Why should they be prevented from knowing the truth and develop plans to deal with it?) So in its wisdom the government decided that only a media specialist should speak to the media. She therefore applied to receive media training, but her requests went nowhere.

It is shocking to those of us who appreciate the truth and should be exposed, so thus my thread. I only pray she is not "punished" in the way ATS reads about outcomes of whistle-blowers. The problem is being investigated by the Information Commissioner and involves complaints that seven departments are being muzzled, including Environment Canada and Treasury Board.

Her story and video here.

Governments and/or government money + science is a bad mix - makes for bad science.

Corporations and/or corporate money + science is a bad mix - makes for bad science.

Tesla wanted to do right by humanity, but the PTB only wanted his "death ray."

The Canadian Government is one of the most covertly draconian regimes in the world.
The" soft glove" Nazis who are behind both parties have the same agenda and aims as the USG.
The move towards the abolution of Free speech as well as our other taken for granted rights,is well under weigh...
Since the end of the 2nd WW, the perfection and marriage of mind control, to propaganda techniques has been effectively used against the citizens in a sinister effort to make them compliant to the demands of industry and government.

It's true and your right.
Liz though, has no right to throw stones. She's no better than Harper.
In May 011, I got in touch with her and offered her all my files on fallout from Fukushima, Japan, and urged her to speak out about the effect it would have on Canada. NISA/TEPCO/NRC PDF's, infa-reds and tons of pics, some of which are on the big japan thread. I got a polite get lost. She's off pushing thorium reactors now.
David Suzuki's "people" weren't interested either but they did ask for a donation.
No response from the CBC [corpoate broadcasting system] Their retard "science reporter" Bob [I'm a dirt-bag weasel] Mcdonald went silent after confirming one meltdown, so most of my fellow double double hockey zombies have no idea what's going on there.
NDP ran like hell from an FB page when I tried to get them to take a stand.
Harper was off selling uranium to China, from native lands, he's planning to steal.

Canadian scientists muzzled? Are their lives threatened? Do 300 LBS goons show up and break their legs? Are they getting shot?
No.
They might lose a cushy pension and their standard of living..... club med junkets.... but I'm sorry, that's not a good enough excuse to stand back and allow wrong after wrong to be committed. After all it's nothing short of treason.
You found one that waited to retire to tell the truth. Is that the extent of courage in this country? Out of how many tens of thousands of bureaucratic watchdogs and scientists? If even 10% had any guts or ethics the ensuing tidal wave would wash out the corruption.
The more you dig into what's really happening in Canada..... and how little our neighbors know, or care...
We're really screwed.... unless people get real mad [collectively]
Great thread, didn't mean to drift. Just throwin in my 2 cents. Voting is pointless now. I'm glad I'm old.
S+F, dude.

You got that right, Stirling.

I call it rule by deception and obfuscation. It is mind-numbing how they cannot and will not answer a direct question about anything at all.

Are there any websites devoted to Canadian subjects? I like blacklistednews but it's mostly American and foreign issues.

Star for your post. I was horrified by the 33% increase in infant mortality rates after Fukushima and was following it closely for three months until all sites went silent about it and the old data was absolutely compromised. I've been kicking me arse ever since that I didn't take screen shots of the proof.

Well scientists do have to make a living so it's difficult to stand out and risk being fired in this age of unemployment, and as Lazarus Short said, mixing science with government and or business doesn't make for happy camping. However they did hold a common cause rally on parliament hill last summer to protest being muzzled. Not taking their side here necessarily, but some are furious at the closure of Silver Lake research facility for instance, and are speaking out about it.

I haven't really looked for any strictly Canadian sites, though I am sure there are some. I am interested in all world subjects and that's what I most appreciate about ATS.

Wow. Concise, to the point, and endlessly relevant. Good luck to all those who are not old, like you and I. Couldn't agree more with everything you said here. Thanks for writing something so right to the point.

Oh man.... If you're sworn by the government to silence breaking said oath, is considered treason.

In canada they cover you in maple syrup and tie you to a freshly felled cedar for the bears, moose and beavers to snack on when you commit treason..... Horrible way to go.

You speak without thinking... You don't need 300lb goon and/or death threats to shut someone up... You just explain them how their lives would change should they loose their current job and be forced to minimum salary since no institution would accept them anymore... How it would be fun in the morning to look their kids in the eyes and tell them there's nothing for breakfast knowing you have a 50 000$ student loan to pay a house and all...

When your the pride of your family and face turning into the opposite it shuts a lot of people up...

Sorry, you spoke without thinking. I've done it. I've walked away from work because something really bad was going on, and told the people it would effect. It took me 10 seconds to decide. I guess that's why I find your defending of this practise so insulting. Speaks volumes about your character.

This, too, is an excellent point, and one I have made before concerning just the same.

Perhaps I missed something, and didn't realize R4t was defending any such practise, but elucidating that some don't know how to do what you, I and others did, and made that decision just that fast, and also may have paid a very high price that not everyone is strong enough to pay....

It is the most poignant thing about these controls and forcing to go along.....not everyone has the resistance needed within them. And I must say if it came down to, "if you don't do this, I'll cut your children's throats," it then becomes extremely complicated. It's one thing, if it's just you on the line, isn't it?

"They" are not going to pay attention to you because you are not a "credible source" and the credible sources have been silenced. Great system for them, painful and frustrating for the rest of us.

The Government's perspective is that since these scientists are state employees, they do not have free reign on their research. This is similar to most hosting sites and contests where your intellectual property becomes their intellectual property and consequently their will holds final say over how that material is used. Here is another CBC video, different from the website posted.

Thanks for posting this. The contrast between the Obama and Harper policies is made more obvious. I have no doubt that Canada is being used to further a negative agenda.

Essentially threaten their livelihoods and plus threaten any chances of getting a job in your chosen field in Canada. Governing by bullying at it's finest.

My perspective, as a non-Canadian, but as a research scientist is that I pay tax money for high-quality science only on the condition that scientists get guaranteed free reign on their research results.

Governments are not private businesses and must not aim to act similarly.

Otherwise, why should I pay money to advance "science" which politicians will use as a weapon for their own purposes as opposed to improving human understanding and truth.
