Hey OP.. Check out 'A Message for Humanity' by Charlie Chaplain. It's on ATS in a few versions and I've posted in for a thread. Youtube has a bunch.

I also find this one to be inspirational during those down periods..



If you were around for the Miami Vice series, you may recall it formed a powerful backdrop to one of the most powerful episodes of the series. It's a great one either way tho. Hope you are feeling better!

I was about 9 or ten when miami vice was on tv
The theme tune was excellent also at the same time i was watching Magnum.
The themes of the 80s were brilliant and not to forget here in britain we only had 4 channels and c4 came later on.

I was poor as a child and we still had the turn dial tuner and it used to take me ages to tune into miami v and Magnum. I do sort of miss them days but then again its beer talk lol.

I have read that even after the high command stopped Xmas ceasefires after 1914, unofficial ceasefires were largely the order of the day across the Western front. Both the British and the Germans (and perhaps the French?) often couldn't see the point of killing each other by random artillery barrages, sniper fire or unexpected raids across no mans land.

Some German and British units didn't adhere to an unofficial ceasefire - generally the elite units on both sides and the more aggressive units such as the Prussians and the Scots.

Otherwise, both sides made a show of shelling each other but deliberately missing. Top brass got wind of this and demanded enemy barbed wire to prove that aggressive patrolling of no mans land was occurring. Both sides got around that by arranging to swap barbed wire.

As for being an old fuddy duddy, a philosophical way of looking at it, is that at least you have the chance to be one. The alternative isn't so great.

your right, at least i am seeing this age.

Did you know the youngest to die in the trenches was a 6ft, 14 yr old boy who lied about his age to join.

I also visited a grave where a young irishman threw himself on a grenade.
In the early days of the war, trenches were dug in straight lines and the munitions were brought to the front line.

A grenade fell from the carrier and would have detonated igniting the other explosives had he not thrown himself
on to it. Which was the start of the zig zaging trenches, to minimise casualtys due to exploding shells and of course accidents like that.
Dont forget a lot of munitions did not explode due to cut backs on quality controll,
as a result this present day on average of 5 people a year (mainly farmers) are killed from unexploded bombs
from cultivating their fields.

The disclosure emerged in a previously-unseen letter describing the famous match.

Staff sergeant Clement Barker sent the letter home four days after Christmas 1914 when the British and German troops emerged from their trenches in peace.

He described how the truce began after a German messenger walked across No Man's Land on Christmas Eve to broker the temporary cease-fire agreement.

British soldiers went out and recovered 69 dead comrades and buried them.

Sgt Barker said the impromptu football match then broke out between the two sides when a ball was kicked out from the British lines into No Man's Land.
