I was thinking about how humans are fascinated by things we cannot understand. Anything which falls outside our understandings of the laws of nature we call super natural or miraculous. If there is a reality behind this we should be able to categories it and dissect the subject like any other subject. With this in mind I set out to categories the miraculous in order to gain a better understanding of what is taking place, this obviously is not meant to include trickery, illusion or hallucination.

Casting my mind back to deep antiquity and moving forward to modern times I found that all miraculous events could be placed into seven categories:

1, Events caused by the intervention of multidimensional entity's eg spirits, Gods, daemons and creatures from other realms.

2, Events caused by the personal energy of a human eg the moving of an object by the mind or the levitation of a saint/ yogi.

3, Events caused by being in a specific location eg a holy well that miraculously cures sickness or a sacred temple infused with an unknown energy.

4, Events caused by touching of being near an object which has magical ability's eg a crystal, stone, amulet, sword, cup. Some object which appears to have power which is not observed in common objects.

5, Events caused by unusual substances eg the transmutation of lead into gold, potions ointments "he drank from the flask and was restored to a condition of youth"

6, Events caused by sound/music eg "he played on a golden lyre and the music caused stones to move/dance" or "he whispered a sacred word into her ear and she was instantly cured"

7, Events caused by alinements/ timings, the unknown influence of planets/stars eg "he prepared himself for this time on this day as it was only then that this miracle could be preformed."

It is my understanding that every miraculous event that has ever been preformed or witnessed since deep antiquity can be placed into one of these seven categories.

Looking for ties between all seven to better understand what is happening led me to this conclusion:

A miracle is nothing more then the application of an energy (spiritual, mental, ethric or other), the nature of this energy is not understood by humans and therefore it fascinates them....they call it a "miracle" an event not understood by them or explained by their Science.

Its only when one understands what a miracle is that they can then preform one

But understanding is hard when you do not have any way to examine what is or have limited ways to examine it. I Will give you a few examples:

Say that we have a person that is experiencing a spin of chakra on the crown. Say that the person is limited in it's way to examine the effect and cannot be sure what it is. The only thing the person can know is the experiance and the even if the person has it's head to a wall the experiance continue.

1 Is the so called spirit an invisible external entity (like a dog or a higher awareness entity) that have symbiotically (Mutualism) attached itself to the human head ?
2 Is it a energy light wave that runs thru the body that is so concentrated that it feels like physical touch or is it the receptors getting the light that makes the nerves feel like physical touch.
3 Is it an energy being that is keeping its hands on your head blessing the person and massaging the scalp.

There are multiple ideas that could be true but since you cannot examine the phenomena you have no way to know exactly what the phenomena is.

And what about synchronicity. Is it the same for everyone or do the person and whatever is on the other side create their own game that they play with each other? The only way you would really be able to understand how it works for a person is to be the observer in the person that is experiencing the phenomena since a healthy dose of scepticism will make you dissbelive what the person is experiencing.

Star and Flag - this is the kind of stuff I enjoy thinking about.

I can't think of any other categories than you have, nor any better way to merge the categories, without merging them all.

Hopefully you and other users can add in examples for each given category, as to try to find more categories or a link between them.

Awesome thread.

A miracle is something that everyone is clearly able to observe however otherwise it would not be announced as such. If nobody could see it, feel it or know of it it would simply go unannounced. A miracle is something people clearly observe yet they attribute it to supernatural/mystical happenings.

The chakra spinning on the head is not a miracle but if that person physically levitated off the floor for all to see now that would be a miracle.

Maybe categories like: Action, Reaction, Form would help to better assess miracles?

e.g. In the example of The laying on of hands, where exactly is the miracle?

Action: faith and prayer
Reaction: cure or alteration of the physical
Form: the physical touch of the other persons

Where is the miracle? Action, reaction, form?

Another example since u2 like Buddhist stuff:

Chi energy
Action: Faith and meditation
Reaction: Energy movement or alteration of the physical
Form: Energy created by the body

Where's the miracle?

In your first example the miracle would be that the person was healed in a way not fully understood, the cause would be either the application of the healers own energy or them calling on spirits etc to intervene ie it would fall into category 1 or 2

In your second example it would be only called a miracle if an object moved or was transmuted by the person in either case it would fall into category 2 ie the application of the persons mental/chi energy.

Was hoping this thread would be popular but I guess there aren't many people who like to understand how things work while at the same time being someone who accepts miracles as facts.

Why aren't there more people who are interested in this?

Anyways...

Would you not consider mind over matter to be miraculous? That is what it takes to open chakras and channel chi isn't it?

I have done martial arts so am familiar with chi/Qi, I can cause the pupils of my eyes to dilate by concentrating the energy to my eyes, I can make the hair on my arms stand up by causing the energy to flow through them, i can cause my right palm to get hot but best of all if I'm a bit drunk I can sober up quickly simply by exhaling and forcing the alcohol out of my body in my breath

I would not call those miracles however, what this guy can do however is miraculous!

Modern Science killed ALL Miracle or the potencial of these EVENTS. The leap of faith as in "a faith of" extinguished. No Proof of material action=result=consequence. What science knows about sound and its ability to destroy is hidden in black projects. The practice of alchemy was forbidden, all of the ancient knowledge was destroyed by a power greater than the human, its God whom was jealous of us. Why was Science pushed forward as the end all explaination of every physical action? To make the point that it has only half the answers to the physical world--it is at a dead end conclusion---we cannot get the best of the magikal as it is cannot be measured (simple matter transmutation) the will and intent by the human to change outcome is not fathonable; an idea springs instantly into form---pet rock phenome not measurable. We are discouraged to persue this line of thinking because we are not God and only it should do this. We are God and can do these things if we believed in ourselves and I suppose have to rediscover reinvent all of the old lost wisdom. No one can stop the out of body experiences or the physical changes happening to the human now dispite all efforts to thwart shared information flow.

What many people fail to understand (I sometimes forget, too!) is that for something to happen it must adhere to certain conditions, thereby making it Non-miraculous.

For instance, I can't tell you how many times I've tried to will myself to fly - to walk right off my porch and float in the air. This would be a miracle, right? Well, if this were to ever happen there would have to be natural forces at work in order for me to remain in the air. My body would have to emit a powerful force that counteracts gravity. And, whatever this powerful force is made of, my body would have to be capable of containing it without blowing up. If my body is actually generating this force, I would have to eat MASSIVE amounts of food to create such massive amounts of energy. Therefore, the ability to float or fly wouldn't be miraculous at all. It would be based on rational and explainable laws of nature.

To imagine someone floating in the air without any of the criteria listed above, without cause and effect, is just wishful thinking. Miracles cannot happen without cause and effect, and cause and effect makes it not a miracle.

Children believe that something can happen "Just because". But, hopefully they grow out of it.

Children believe the incomprehensible because no one has contaminated their intuitive rationalization of the world they find themselves dropped/thrust upon. Once someone brings into their thought realm "DOUBT" (in oneself and its own unique perceptions) all else vanishes out of the _ Doubt Kills ideas. It is as powerful a thoughtform as Hate; more insidious as it hides as waffling, or indecisive, worst of all LOST before being found.
