Maybe you have an inferiority complex. By softening your voice when around other men you are deferring dominance to them and by raising your voice around women you are exerting dominance. It happens regularly in the animal kingdom- a male animal will defer to the alpha male but still exert dominance over the lesser females. It is quite common among pack animals.
