Sorry, Sulaw & Nyiah, I wasn't going to reply. I was afraid I would take the thread off topic, but I now see I have to calm some fears so no worries like Sulaw said, you could always......

Camel spiders also measure up to 8 inches, but some say they've seen bigger ones out there. I think I'd take the tarantula over the camel spider. There's something creepier about the camel spider.

Camel spiders are one of the main reasons that I have such a phobia of spiders. I served in Saudi in the 90's and saw several. Not only are the freaking huge and scary, but they are also pretty damn fast. Had a lot of nightmares about them when I got back...HATE them!!!

Found a pic here:

Arachnids are amazing. Without them - we would be overrun by truly obnoxious pest insects.

I have a huge phobia of spiders. I was so proud of myself one day, because, a friend of mine had a tarantula as a pet and I touched it. I then touched my face and it broke out in a rash.

Psychosomatic? Probably.

Will I ever willingly touch one again? Not a chance.

Especially if it is as big as my face..

Side note: I am never going to visit Sri Lanka now. Ever.

Is that actually real in Australia?
I almost pissed my pants dude.. The Dude does not abide!

On a side note, the article DID say they have some more species up their sleeves.. If they are dog sized, I am moving into a padded cell with no windows or cracks in the wall. Shudders

As great as it is that there was a new species found I can't help but ask myself...why..why..why must I always click on these pics, haha.

Spiders are cool as long as I don't see them at all at least not in my house....ever.

I do let them live in my veggie garden though, I just try to pretend that I don't see them, they help keep my roses rosey and they keep those nats at bay on my veggies.

Wonder what species will be found next.

The Spiders here aren't that big
They are just nasty little critters if you happen to get bitten by certain species.

Mouse Spider

Funnel Web - 2nd venomous in the world

I have heard that when they are sprayed with fly spray, they dont die, they get really pissed off

White Tail

Flesh eating venom though I'm sure this hasn't been 100% proven

Darillyn, you weren't psychosomatic. Some tarantulas, if not all, can "release" their hairs on their rear and cause anything from a slight itch to a bad rash. Some hair just falls off when handled and some spiders can forcefully release their hairs when they are cornered or they become uncomfortable.

Besides the normal "hairs" covering the body, some tarantulas also have a dense covering of irritating hairs called urticating hairs, on the opisthosoma, that they sometimes use as protection against enemies.[11] These hairs are present on New World species but not on specimens from the Old World.

Yep and thats why when some rodents catch the tarantulas they spin them around in the dirt prior to snacking on them...

Wow, they look creepy as hell, I think I'd have nightmares too!
I freak out at the standard household ones, never mind these huge things.
