Scientists: China Bird Virus Likely Silent Threat

bigstory.ap.org

BEIJING (AP) — Scientists taking a first look at the genetics of a bird flu strain that has killed three people in China said Wednesday that the virus could be harder to track than its better-known cousin H5N1 because it might be able to spread among poultry without showing any signs.

The scientists, at several research institutes around the world, urged Chinese veterinary authorities to widely test animals and birds in affected regions to quickly detect and eliminate the H7N9 virus before it becomes widespread.

They said the virus is troubling because it can infect poultry without producing any symptoms, while seriously sickening humans. The virus, previously known to have infected only birds, appears to have mutated, enabling it to more easily infect other animals, including pigs, which could serve as hosts and spread the virus more widely among humans, they said.

Whilst you were all distracted by the North Korean hubbub, a deadly silent bird flu was spreading slowly.

This one is much worse in that it is much harder to track.

Already, more cases have been reported (see CNN Link).

Now, does this mean it's a much stronger form? I don't know - but it is more serious in that it would take longer to detect. But, in the recent antibiotics scare, it would be quite disturbing if stronger strains were developing faster than we're able to find cures for them.....

Additionally, knowing China, there are probably much more cases than have been let on.

When more media outlets get onto this story it will likely open up the coverage a bit, and we will learn more about its spread, the danger level, and details about likely worldwide-pandemic status. Thanks for keeping on top of it. Those tiny dinosaurs are fighting back!

A bird Flu that doesn't kill birds, just gives them the "Flu" but kills 60% of people who get it.
So it has time to evolve transmission to humans.
Sounds like a perfect storm.
