researchers at the University of California Santa Cruz hevae trained a sea lion to dance to the music of Boogie Wonderland’ and Backstreet Boys

A seal named Ronan is the first non-human mammal to be able to keep a beat and his ability suggests that many more species could have untapped musical abilities.

In a study published Monday by The Journal of Comparative Psychology, researchers at the University of California Santa Cruz announced that they’ve discovered “the first non-human mammal to be able to keep a beat.”

I think they should put a long hair wig on him and crank some metallica

Ahaha... maybe the sea lion wasn't the first non-human mammal to keep a beat after all?

Some times it's useful to look beyond peer reviewed sources for information.

Pretty remarkable. That sea lion keeps better time than a lot of my drum students. I should show them this video and tell them to get their # together

Actually, this dog is also keeping the beat..so, the sea lion is actually not the first..
Watch the head bob of the dog...natural head bopping to the beat..perfectly in sync also.

really good one.

I'm not convinced that the video of the dog is real but it seems to be.

If it is real, it's much more remarkable than the sea lion because the dog probably wasn't trained do to that and it seems to naturally enjoy following the beat. The sea lion was trained using food as incentive, and it started off with very simple beats... it's more like an instinctive reflex embedded into the sea lion as a response for food.
