Activists set to mark North Korea Freedom Week
By Lee Chi-dong
WASHINGTON, April 26 (Yonhap) -- Activists working to improve North Korea's human rights situation will stage an intensive campaign worldwide next week to raise public awareness of the problem, a main organizer said Friday.

They plan to hold various events in Washington, Seoul and other cities to mark the 10th annual North Korea Freedom Week from April 28 through May 5, according to Susan Sholte, head of the North Korea Freedom Coalition, based in Washington.

Her group will work with other organizations and people supporting efforts to address the North Korean human rights issue.

A special concert, titled "A Night of Hope," will kick off North Korea Freedom Week in Washington at 7 p.m. Sunday.

This year, the coalition will focus on collecting online petitions demanding China's new president, Xi Jinping, stop repatriating North Korean defectors.

It has designated May 2 as Worldwide Awareness Day for North Korean Refugees.

"Our focus is to have many Chinese embassies and consulates receive petitions to Xi Jinping on May 2 calling for the end to the illegal, inhuman and brutal repatriation of North Korean refugees. Many coordinators are also sponsoring events to raise awareness of this issue," Scholte said in an emailed message.

In addition, various events will take place throughout North Korea Freedom Week in Seoul and several other South Korean cities, including a photo exhibition on North Korean human rights conditions, seminars and rallies, she added.

Korean / English / Chinese / Spanish / Japanese
Pyongyang, April 23 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the DPRK issued the following statement on Tuesday:
Recently the U.S. released the "2012 report on human rights" in which it malignantly slandered the DPRK.
It is unbecoming for the U.S. to style itself a "human rights judge" though it is the biggest human rights abuser that killed innocent people and caused untold disasters in all parts of the world through aggression and interference.
The U.S. stages the farce of evaluating the human rights performance in more than 190 countries of the world every year, which is aimed to invent a pretext for putting pressure on those countries disobedient to it and toppling them.
The U.S. works out the "human rights report" with countries' obedience to its strategy for dominating the world as a criterion. So those countries aspiring after independence have become target of the U.S. accusations and attacks without exception.
The U.S. "human rights report" is a tool for aggression and interference to overturn the social systems of anti-U.S. independent countries. Herein lie its reactionary nature and danger.
It is a trite method of the U.S. to charge with "human rights abuses" those countries with which it is displeased and interfere in their internal affairs with persistent "human rights" ballad and thus cultivate dishonest forces.
The U.S. employed this method when bringing down socialist system in the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries during the Cold War and also when overturning different countries in the Mideast and North Africa recently.
Finding it difficult to topple down the DPRK by force of arms, the U.S. is now resorting to such a base method.
As a result, the U.S. "human rights" ballad is nothing but a conspiratorial means to realize its hostile policy toward the DPRK to topple down its socialist system chosen by the Korean people.
Such ballad will never work on the Korean-style socialist society in which all the service personnel and people are single-mindedly united around the dear respected Marshal Kim Jong Un, a country which is possessed of modern nuclear deterrent for self-defence.
The more undisguisedly the U.S. escalates its hostile policy toward the DPRK aimed at bringing down its social system, the further the DPRK will bolster its nuclear deterrent to defend its social system and will thoroughly shatter the U.S. "human rights" ballad its own way. -0-

Korean / English / Chinese / Spanish / Japanese
Pyongyang, April 27 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the General Bureau for Central Guidance to the Development of the Special Zone gave an answer to a question put by KCNA Saturday as the puppet south Korean regime made public a "decision" of withdrawing all the personnel of the south side remaining in the Kaesong Industrial Zone (KIZ).
He said:
The south Korean conservatives held a meeting of ministers for diplomacy and security in Chongwadae with the presence of the chief executive. After the meeting they let the minister of Unification make public a "government statement".
The statement clarified the "decision" to withdraw all the south side's personnel remaining in the KIZ, citing "difficulty" and "protection of people" while shifting the blame for the KIZ situation on to the DPRK.
This is sheer sophism and hideous provocation of confrontation maniacs.
It is a well known fact that the puppet conservative group has persistently tried to do away with the KIZ, a product of the June 15 joint declaration.
Kim Kwan Jin, "minister of Defense", revealed a dangerous attempt to request the U.S. forces to hurl their commando into the KIZ for a military operation, crying out for "hostages" and "detention". Under such situation the DPRK blocked personnel of the south from entering the KIZ and made sure that those personnel who had already entered there went back according to their will.
After taking issue with this, the puppet group made a mockery of the DPRK, proposing dialogue without any sincere intention. In the long run, it, proposing working-level talks between the authorities, went the lengths of demanding the DPRK respond to the proposal till next morning and threatening to take "a crucial step" in case it refuses to accept the proposal.
There were many proposals for dialogue in the history of inter-Korean relations but there has never been such precedent that the present puppet group arrogantly proposed dialogue with threat of "crucial step" after setting a deadline and this is unprecedented in the history of world diplomacy either.
It is self-evident that such unheard-of strange farce is not to have dialogue with sincerity but to totally derail it.
When the DPRK took a resolute stand on the arrogant proposal for dialogue made by the puppet group, it lost no time to hold an emergency confab, as if it had been waiting for this, and went over to the next phase of bringing the KIZ to a collapse.
All facts go to clearly prove that the group's proposal for dialogue and decision to withdraw personnel are pursuant to the already worked out scenario to lead the KIZ to a collapse.
This is fully evidenced by the confession made by an official concerned of Chongwadae, when explaining the "crucial step," that it has worked out diverse scenarios against the north and is carrying them out after closely examining them.
The puppet group prattled that the step for withdrawing personnel was taken for the lack of food and materials in the KIZ but there is not lack of food and materials there in fact.
Nevertheless, the group perpetrated a provocation painting food and materials as humanitarian issues. This only indicates that it is running the whole gamut of intrigues to bring down the KIZ.
The KIZ at last ceased to operate due to the vicious moves of the group though it has been successful over the last nearly decade thanks to the compatriots' blessing and concern of the whole world. It may be completely closed any time.
The DPRK sets store by the KIZ, a product of the June 15 joint declaration, but it has no idea of continuing to confer a favor on those who abuse it, not feeling grateful to the DPRK.
The closure of the KIZ would only bring enormous losses and damage to the south side, not to the north.
On the contrary, it would create more favorable conditions for the great war for national reunification as it would be possible to reoccupy the vast area of the KIZ as a military theatre, level at Seoul at closer distance and pave a wide road for southward advance.
The DPRK does not care at all about the group's pullback of its personnel and the like.
It has never detained any of them in the KIZ but allowed them to go out of it.
It is ridiculous, indeed, for the group to try to browbeat the DPRK with such "crucial measure." One cannot but express concern over to what catastrophe the stupid and reckless confrontation maniacs will push the inter-Korean relations.
The present chief executive of south Korea, in particular, is now crying out for "the north's dismantlement of its nukes," "right option" and "change," bringing into bolder relief her confrontational intention towards the DPRK.
It is closely following whether or not the chief of Chongwadae intends to make the KIZ, the only undertaking for cooperation common to the nation, fall victim to the policy of confrontation, dancing to the tune of confrontation maniacs.
The responsibility for the total closure of the KIZ will entirely rest with the puppet group. -0-
well there it is an other blame game, SK did it SK did it, when the world knows they the DPRK did it when they pulled out their 53,000 workers and closed the border. same BS that North Korea has done past 60 years. but it is fun to make fun of Un, but there are so few puns, that rhyme with Un, i think i used them all.

I wouldn't say they have no fertilizer, but they certainly are hurting for it. the government ordered every person to produce hundreds of kilograms of feces. It's creating problem between the people; some have to put locks on their lavatories to keep the poo thieves away, and I read another article that said some have to stand guard over it.
Looks like China has backed off on that kind of assistance. The article goes on to say that the people are being forced to collect more scrap metal as well.

S. Korea should take full responsibility for shutdown of joint industrial park: NK official
SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- A North Korean official said Saturday that South Korea should be held responsible if a troubled inter-Korean industrial complex in the communist country is shut down permanently.

In a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), monitored in Seoul, the official, in his capacity as a spokesperson for the General Bureau for the Special Zone Development Guidance, said responsibility should squarely rest with South Korea if the complex is folded.

The warning came as South Korea began pulling all of its remaining 175 workers out of the Kaesong Industrial Complex in the North's border city of the same name.

On Saturday, a total of 125 South Korean workers returned home, with the remaining 50 set to be withdrawn by Monday, said officials at the Unification Ministry which handles cross-border affairs.

Red Lines, Deadlines, and Thinking the Unthinkable: India, Pakistan, Iran, North Korea, and China

By Anthony H. Cordesman
Apr 16, 2013

Early in the thermonuclear age, Herman Kahn warned the world that it had to “think about the unthinkable”: The consequences of an actual nuclear war, and consider which side – if any – might “win.” While the story may be apocryphal, Kahn is also said to have told Curtis Lemay – then head of the Strategic Air Command – that Lemay did not have a war plan because he focused too heavily on strikes and inflicting maximum damage, while ignoring the consequences of nuclear weapons. Kahn is said to have told Lemay that he lacked a war plan and all he had was a “wargasm.”

The end of the Cold War seemed to put an end to the need for such thinking, but recent developments in North Korea and Iran make it all too clear that there is still a need for such horrifying yet “realist” analysis. Of course, calmer heads may prevail. Reason, deterrence, and arms control may still curtail nuclear proliferation, and are the most probable result of today’s nuclear arms races. But, that probability is declining. Four different nuclear arms races are now interacting to change the need for strategic calculus and demand a strategy that looks beyond arms control and considers a much grimmer future.

India and Pakistan: Suicide with Minor Grand Strategic Consequences
It does go on to say for ti is relevant to the current SK US DPRK impasse from the link

The official view of the US intelligence community is that North Korea has not yet been successful in getting high yields from its fission devices. Its initial tests produced only very low yields. The third test on February 12, 2013 seems to have produces a yield of only “several kilotons” to 6-7 kilotons, versus 12-20 kilotons for the first US weapons. This would present serious problems for the regime in terms of targeting anything but city-sized targets at long missile ranges, given the combined uncertainties surrounding the reliability of both the warhead and North Korean missiles, and the reliability and accuracy of North Korean systems overall.
North Korea may not have the ability to build small warheads and bombs – although this seems to be a subject of dispute within the US intelligence community and outside exports; for instance, ISIS estimates that, “it should not come as a surprise to the international community that North Korea may now have the capability to explode a miniaturized nuclear device. ISIS (and key members of the U.S. intelligence community) have assessed for some time that North Korea likely has the capability to miniaturize a nuclear weapon for its 800 mile range Nodong missile. Although more information is needed to make a sound assessment, this test could, as North Korea has stated, demonstrate this capability. ISIS has also assessed that North Korea still lacks the ability to deploy a warhead on an ICBM, although it shows progress at this effort. North Korea would need to conduct missile flight tests with a re-entry vehicle and mock warhead, increase the explosive yield of the warhead, possibly requiring its further miniaturization, and improve the operational reliability of the warhead and missile.”
well that's all for now till next time, peace PS for you that want to what ISIS is here is the link www.isis-online.org...

Korean / English / Chinese / Spanish / Japanese
Pyongyang, April 27 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun on April 25 carried a political essay titled "Nuke and peace".
The U.S. nukes presage disaster but the Korean people's nukes promise peace and happiness, the political essay said, and went on:
The DPRK can also roar at imperialism with nukes of justice, and disgrace, humble and insult U.S. imperialism which has grown fat by bleeding mankind white and exploiting the earth's resources.
At last the DPRK crossed the watershed for realizing its dream for lasting peace and prosperity. The DPRK's access to nukes accelerates the world's denuclearization and peace. Strength can be contained only with strength and nukes with nukes. The U.S. nukes beget nuclear proliferation and nuclear arms race but the DPRK's nukes promote denuclearization based on new concept and mission of nukes. It has become possible to set up new peaceful and stable order by disabling big powers' nuclear advantages and hegemony.
The arrogant U.S. imperialists and all stripes of hostile forces have built up public opinion as if the world has been faced with big danger. They have become vociferous about it almost every day. This can be interpreted in two ways: one is to put pressure on the DPRK to stop "provocation" and "threats" to the international community and the other is to threaten the DPRK to change its line and way. The U.S. asserts that the DPRK will have no future as long as it holds the possession of nukes. Do they have even an iota of idea of how the DPRK will respond to it? The U.S. imperialists' craftiness and brigandish nature are giving off venomous poison.
Nuclear dismantlement precisely means disarmament and the change of line means the toppling of social system. This land will turn into a theatre of scramble of big powers and Korea will be forced to experience the second 1905 incident. The sacred history of our predecessors will be made a mockery of and we will lose the socialist life that has been kept dear to us generation after generation.
The U.S. imperialists brought a false charge against a country that had never accessed nukes and occupied it by way of a war to gratify its unrelenting avarice for natural resources. A country reached out to the U.S. for reconciliation and concession, believing in the promise for prosperity in return for dismantlement of nukes, only to be overthrown and occupied by the U.S. These countries are now trembling with bitter anger.
We will work hard without deviation or stop to make sure that no country and nation will fall a victim to the imperialist wolves and to prove human hope that man is equal and people of any country can achieve progress and civilization with their own view on value.
It is shame for south Korea to boast of itself ranking among world's economically advanced nations with the help of fund and technology provided by the U.S. with an aim to use it as a springboard for the continental domination. What is all the more irony is the disgusting behavior of the south Korean puppet forces trying to admonish the DPRK, unbecoming for their inferior position in the aspect of possession of satellite and nukes, symbol of a country's might in the world arena.
The puppet forces should feel shame of themselves as they make mischief in line with their master, far from expressing gratitude to the heroic people who achieved the great cause of the nation standing unspeakable and manifold difficulties. They are utterly ignorant of what the real treasure of the nation is and how the future generations will become.
No one can turn back history which has advanced fast. The DPRK will keep advancing, standing all tempests of history and mercilessly smashing all rubbish forces no matter how hard it can be to the hostile forces and how much calumnies they may heap on the DPRK to check its advance by a war.
With its foot firmly based on the foundation of a nuclear power, the DPRK will surge toward the world like a satellite. Just as it turned nukes which were a monopoly of imperialism into the treasured sword of the people it will turn the wealth and prosperity owned by imperialism into the possession of the people.
The DPRK has already advanced far. It has leapt to the center stage of Northeast Asia as a country of justice and will contribute to human progress and prosperity. It is now gearing up strategically to face the world which will be vibrant and with which it will forge broad and active bonds.
Steadfast is our principle and coherent is our logic.
We are firm and fixed in our stand and determination to counter all the reactionary forces' plots and obstruction moves that harass peace and stand in our way for prosperity until the U.S. clears itself of the inveterate bitterness toward the DPRK and persistent ambition for aggression.
After decades and centuries, the world people will look back and reflect on the heroic deed done by the people of the present generation of socialist Korea by safeguarding the dignity and human justice in the face of manifold difficulties and pressure.
No one can check our advance as long as there are the leadership of the dear respected Marshal Kim Jong Un, who represents ever-victorious banner, the nuclear force for self-defence of the powerful revolutionary Paektusan army and the united strength of the people. -0-

Yep, and it basically was the last card they played.... It was about the last "action" they could do...since then, all words, pretty much, though they did come up with that rather lame "move and raise the missiles" action as an original addition to their playbook. Still, did nothing for them except generate some more laughs.

Since then, war has been imminent, and that has been said from BOTH sides. Each is wanting the other to hit first, but both realize that the one who does, will lose in the court of international opinion. It's a stalemate.

Amphibious assault vehicles of the South Korean Marine Corps launch smoke bombs as they move to shore during a U.S.-South Korea joint landing operation drill in Pohang, about 230 miles southeast of Seoul, on April 26, 2013. The drill is part of the two countries' annual military training called Foal Eagle, which began on March 1 and runs until April 30.

Tension has been fueled by North Korean anger over the imposition of U.N. sanctions after its last nuclear arms test in February. The two Koreas have been technically in a state of war since a truce that ended their conflict, which lasted from 1950 to 1953.
