I've been wondering with this Cyprus bank fiasco, could Australia get into a similar position? And what would it take to cause such a problem in countries outside Europe. I know the Australian dollar is very strong at the moment, but the Euro is still stronger, and Europe is in a bad state.

I'm pretty sure aussies will be ok.Much to the chagrin(sp?) of many LNP supporters, the alp have managed to not just keep us out of recession, but have helped in the formation of hundreds of thousands of jobs. (I think it was 900000) the graph below shows how strong our economy is comparing GDP to other countries. sure, it would be awsome if we had no debt, but given the GFC, we're in pretty good shape.

Our only problem will arise if the LNP get into power after the election at the end of this year. Their leader has vowed to turn back many of the reforms put in place by the present govt. and remove such things as the carbon tax and mining tax. But he hasn't shown how he will pay for many of the other reforms that he said he will keep once he has taken the razor to these good policies. so the only way he can pay for them is to claw back, pension benefits, remove the 18000 dollar tax free threshold and take it back to the pittance at which it was, and claw back things that helped out the battlers like the school kids bonus.
so if they get into power, I believe that our economy will 1) unravel or 2) the less fortunate in the community will wear the brunt of the pain (it happened before, they gloated about how well off our country was while pensioners didn't have enough to make ends meet).

and if that is the case, then the people who voted him in will deserve everything they get (or lose to be more to the point)

LOL You make it sound angry, but it makes perfect sense. We are not in economic competition with other countries. Only the filthy rich are. I try not to buy foreign products that we can make here in the U.S., and I don't expect other countries to buy our stuff if they make it there.

What we need is Equal Trade for those things that we can't make or grow here. Equal, as in why should one country profit over another?

I just thought I'd mention that not all Americans are unaware of Australia's contributions in places like Vietnam. The Aussie bush pilots had a bit of a legend built for themselves. It seems they rarely, if ever, met a place they wouldn't drop or fly into, to get Americans out. Damn any lines on the map or pesky ground fire. A good number of Americans owe their getting home to those pilots.

I have to agree with Wrabbit. Those of us in this discussion who are American should not forget that the Australian fighting man has proven his mettle many times over. Australia has been one of our most steadfast allies, and have stood by us even through thick and thin. Lets not belittle all of Australia just because one fifty-cent stooge decided to go on a naive anti-American rant.

Looks like we're on the same page in our political opinions. If you want to know about what I think about the LNP, note that I'm from Queensland, voted for the ALP, and have a look at what happened to us with Newman. The LNP will win the election though, no doubt about that. And who knows what will happen with bloody Tony Abbot in charge... And sure, those who elect him in do deserve what they get, but what about us who don't want him? And to be quite honest, with all this leadership stuff, I probably won't vote for ALP this year.

Actually, as he said he said that he pastes letters in from elsewhere (not sure why?), it could actually prove that his keyboard is broken (and he hasn't figured out that there is an onboard keyboard on Windows, Ubuntu, and probably even the Mac OS). ah, if you're talking about the bold text in the link in one of my posts, it came from another post in which the graph was relevant (sp?) and I didn't do the bold thing, it just happened (it was a copy and paste).

so wake up and see that I do have a broken keyboard. every now and then you might see that instead of an s in a word there is a v and most of the time I catch them but now and then I miss. But from now on, every time I DO miss one, I will think of the egg on your face for your lack of initial insight way back when you first tried to show how awsome you were
