I hated a Serbian film . What trash . The film maker is some rich brat who's money all came from his dad who was a politico who made all his money war mongering. The film is despised locally there .

The Oscar for older movies I've seen on Youtube lately goes to:

The Day of the Beast.

This is a Spanish occult horror/black comedy from the mid-1990s with English subtitles.
Simply classic.
www.imdb.com...

Others are:
Horror Express and The Devil rides Out.
Both classic movies, that are more thrillers nowadays, but very nice for cold, rainy evenings.

Younger horror fans should also see:
Prophesy
www.imdb.com...
Re-animator
www.imdb.com...
Superstition/The Witch
www.imdb.com...
Dagon

I actually think of Reanimator as a classic. It's Nightbreed that gets overlooked .
Speaking of Clive Barker ,lest we not forget Midnight Meat Train .

Also ,there one I just saw recently . It's absolutely priceless . It's the first movie ,other than movies about the dictatorship ,to come out of Cuba .

It's called Juan Of The Dead.
Cuban zombie . Off the hook . It's even pays a small homage to Bruce Lee . I was totally impressed .
I so hope these guys do more movies together . It's as good as Shawn of the Dead in my opinion .

It's not an easy film to watch and the final shots could make the happiest person feel sad about themselves.

Life and Death of a Porno Gang is another film from that area that sort of makes you wonder why someone would come up with certain ideas.

While no where near as depressing as A Serbian Film nor even a horror Irreversible (monica bellucci film) has the same sort of life sucks quality to it.

I watched Irreversible when it first came out. I love him (Monica's hubby, they were both in brotherhood of the wolf together ,yet another film to add to this thread) .

It was before all the hype ,and I read the synopsis, which left a lot out of course .
It was so strange initially ,I had to watch it twice ,to absorb it all . Brutal .Depressing ,but pretty amazing when you really thought about it .
There's another one with him ....horrid film . I forget the name . Along the lines of the hills have eyes meets The devils rejects .
Hated that one . Gave me a gross feeling ...he's disgusting in it too .
Here it is ,Sheitan
I hated it .

I love all of those movies! Anything based on Clive Barker's books usually rocks. It's just a shame no film makers have taken on "Imajika".
We just watched Juan of the Dead last month, and even though the hubby usually ignores movies with sub-titles even HE enjoyed it immensely.

Their was a pretty good film version of Dread by Clive Barker from his Books of Blood Volume 2.

Dread on IMDB

Also their was the movie Book of Blood

Book of Blood on IMDB

Finally if you have a chance to see the Cabal Cut of Nightbreed at any of the horror conventions it's worth it!

I only saw the first 2 Subspecies movies but I liked them. Throw backs to the 50's and 60's. No CGI just a lot of OLD stop film animation and shadow. Maybe that's why I liked them. Reminded me of my youth.

I saw V/H/S. It was pretty good but I think V/H/S 2 will probably be better. I watch most horror movies- the good, the bad and the awful. Between Netflix, Chiller and FearNet we consume a pretty steady diet of horror films around here. For the older ones I have a massive DVD and VHS horror movie collection. I probably need to catalogue them one of these days!

Thanks, I'll definitely look out for those movies!

If I had to really think of movies with sharply divided opinions, that were panned by the critics but had people jumping or horrified in the cinemas or movie parties at the time (haven't seen them lately though), it would be:

The Serpent and the Rainbow
www.imdb.com...

The Relic
www.imdb.com...

Thanks also for the reminder of Nightbreed.
What a classic movie.
Strangely, like In the Mouth of Madness (thanks for the reminder somewhere above) it's one of those movies I saw, and it was different and memorable, yet it was almost forgotten, and the titles never mentioned again, and later one wonders whether one actually saw that, or whether it was just a glimpse from a nightmare.
Good to know they existed after all.

I love post-colonial film, and especially when this combines with horror.
Not necessarily "cannibal" type 1970's exploitation movies (which are very formulaic), but movies with real political issues that suddenly include a monster.
I'd love to see three (actually quite recent) films again, but their titles escape me.
I wonder if anyone can help?

The one is about really horrific Vikings invading North America, while the other is about mole-like creatures that eat people in a kind of 19th century Western colonial encounter between cowboys and Native Americans.

Then I saw a short movie (or part of a horror series with a different story in each episode) about the Wendigo.
It was all on a ranch, and the guy who turns into the cannibalistic Wendigo was one of the scariest faces I've seen.

I'd love to see them again, so if it rings a bell please let me know.

The western one is called "The Burrowers". The other with Vikings and Indians is "Pathfinder".

It's hard to say what's underrated because times change. This scared the crap out of a lot of people in '75 but today it's not all that. Then, not underrated. Today, yeah.

I've seen Dread and Book of Blood but didn't know there was another cut of Nightbreed. Thanks for the heads up! I shall investigate!
