I don't disagree with that at all, and respect that unnecessary vitriol and rhetoric gets spouted out in the gun issue - from both sides. The other side of the coin is the assumption that anyone who might entertain the idea of a dialogue about guns must be some sort of perverted, hippie, drug-addict, weak-willed, yellow-bellied, shill, commie.

Race, sadly, is something that fits all too effectively into the divide and conquer mechanism. We, as a nation, still haven't learned to be adult about race and racism. Racists now hide behind euphemisms and straw-man arguments to avoid being seen as racists... and this only serves to make it that much easier to write off any and all opinions as racist - even those that are not at all meant to be.

The only conciliation I can find in the whole mess is that things are getting bad enough in the US that eventually we are all going to have to band together as a people, ignoring our differences and focusing upon our shared concerns and similarities - if we are to have any sort of future as a nation.
